Understanding Poetry

Firstoff, to understand how poetry teaches us, we must understand poetry. One of the main things for understanding poetry, is to understand the language used to describe it. We all were given 2 poetry terms to create a definition and poster for (including an example).

How Does Text Help Us Understand a Concept?

Here comes the social studies aspect to this unit… How text helps us understand historical perspective.

What is historical perspective?

Historical perspective is the outlook and perspective that depends upon the circumstances of an era. For example, a young Canadian woman in the 21st century probably won’t have issues talking about woman’s rights, whereas a woman in the 16 hundreds would at least find it improper, most likely more so.

Historical Perspectives Explain and infer different perspectives on past or present people, places, issues, or events by considering prevailing norms, values, worldviews, and beliefs.

– A Curricular Competency

How did we learn this?

To learn this concept, we took a look into Abraham Lincoln. Many people regard him as one of the best presidents ever, for the action he took in ending slavery in America. However, many think that he was a horrible president that ruined America by taking power from the individual state, and through that ruined “True Democracy”. Read more about how both opinions are true, valid, and depend upon your worldview, in my Abraham Lincoln Historical Perspective Paper

To learn this competency, we completed some more curriculum.

Expressing and Supporting Opinions: Express an opinion and support it with credible evidence to transform ideas and information into original texts.

How Does Poetry Help Us Understand Revolutions In Society Through Time?

As always, we were put into great groups, to do something really fun, in a really short amount of time. This time I was in a group with Jo, Caleb, Amelia, and Kiyaan, and our task was to create a theme, collect poems from across time, and analyze how these poems are different depending on the environments they were created in.

As you would have heard in the video above, people are motivated for all types of revolution in generally the same way. People revolt because they need hope, and their situation doesn’t have room for possible improvement.

I hope that you have learned something about revolution, poetry and PLP, and that you have enjoyed yourself as much as I have. Have a Happy Holiday season of personal revolution, and share this post like christmas cheer.
