Frozen 3: Olaf Goes to Loon Lake

*Brrrrrrrr* g-greetings frrom m-my -11º C lloooon lak-k-ke memoriesss

Three layers of pants, two layers of wool socks, two shirts, a sweater, jacket, winter boots, a touque, gloves, and a scarf, welcome to the outfit of the day; Loon Lake edition. I guess my ultimate conclusion from this 5 day field study was that I am not built to survive moderately cold weather.

Challenging Myself

The three days we had with Pinnacle Pursuits were an amazing opportunity to get to step outside of my comfort zone in ways I usually wouldn’t have access to. One of the things that I think effected me greatly was my experience on the climbing wall. I was stuck at a point on the wall that I could just not get over. My fingers were frozen, my winter boots were slipping, palms sweaty, physical strength was completely zapped, and mentally I was so done and longing to get off the wall. But the amazing guy at the end of the rope would not let me go down. I spent around 15 minutes stuck at that one point on the wall and I felt so bad about holding up the line of people waiting to try the side I was on (again so sorry guys I wanted to come down he would NOT let me). I think after about the 5 minute mark there was no hope left in me that I would ever make it further up the wall, but every time I wanted to quit the guy told me to just focus on the wall and nothing else. He told me that he knew I could do it and that I knew what I needed to do I just had to put my mind to it. I tried SO HARD to climb up and use all my mental strength to conquer the wall, but I failed. We ran out of time and I was at last allowed to return to solid ground (thank god). And all of the sudden the tears that I had been holding in on the wall started to run down my cheeks. I was exhausted both physically and mentally. When trying to figure out why I was crying, I realized quickly that these were not “sad tears”. I think the main reason was because of the exhaustion and physical pain that I was experiencing post-hanging on a wall for 15 minutes. But I also think I was overwhelmed because of the amount of support I was receiving from my peers. And how a man who I had only known for less than an hour had so much faith in me. So special thank you to Brandon because this wouldn’t have happened without him.

My Learnings

As this was a Leadership-themed retreat, we did a lot of talk about leadership and how we could be the best versions of ourselves. One of my favourite activities that we did was creating a personal credo, which I think is more easily described as personal affirmations. I found it hard to get past the barrier of self-doubt when trying to list my strengths or talents. Sometimes it feels wrong to toot one’s own horn per say but in this case that’s exactly what we were trying to do. I found that reflecting on my personal values helped me see what I was actually good at and what my ideal qualities were. We need up making or credos into wallpapers for our devices and I decided to do one for my iPad and one for my phone.

I chose the photos with a certain aesthetic because I actually wanted to enjoy having them be on my screen every time I open my device. Having those affirmations will help me to become the person I want to be and even though the credo may change every now and again, it will help me keep close to my goals.

Conclusion

So in conclusion, I was able to do a lot of learning and self-reflection during my time at Loon Lake. I hope to carry this experience with me throughout the rest of my life and take full advantage of the opportunities that this trip has opened for me. It was a fun trip and I can’t wait to see how it compares to the PLP 10 DISNEYWORLD TRIP!!!!

As always, Brooke.

Being Effective

Helloooo fellow moderately effective human beings. This blog post will be a bit different from the usual ones because this is for something we did in Maker. We learned about a book called The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People or in our case, Teens. You may have seen this book before or even just heard someone talking about it. And as you may have guessed from the title, this book is supposed to teach you how to be your most effective self. And before we dive into this project I have something I would like to say about being “your most effective self”. Mainly why is the expectation that we should be functioning at a high level? I am perfectly fine functioning at a moderate to low level depending on my mood. I think we are setting the standards a little to high for a bunch of exhausted highschoolers. But maybe thats just my opinion. Ok so lets jump into the rest of this post.

The Habits

Throughout the book there are 7 habits for you to start including in your life. Those habits are categorized into 4 groups of your life. Here’s an overview of all of the habits and categories.

The Set-up

The set up phase talks about why you would want to complete the 7 habits and how they can help you. We also talked about paradigms and principles and how to identify them. For each category we did something called an “assessment choice board activity” which was supposed to show our understanding of the topic. Here was my playlist I made for this category and the written explanation that I created to go along with it;

Songs;

Follow My Feet by The Unlikely Candidates

Little Lion Man by Mumford & Sons

I Will Wait by Mumford & Sons

Sing Together by Train

I think that these songs represent part one because they are all about finding yourself. Follow My Feet is about choosing right or wrong, the low road or the high road. Little Lion Man is about being honest with yourself and knowing your weaknesses. I Will Wait is about loving yourself and others and supporting. And Sing Together is about coming together and supporting everyone and the ones you love.

The Private Victory

The Private Victory was the first category that included habits. These habits are all about taking responsibility, planning things out, and being a visionary. The Private Victory will help you become independent and in charge of your own destiny.

Habit 1- Be Proactive

Habit 2- Begin With The End in Mind

Habit 3- Put First Things First

The assessment choice board that I did for these habits was a little animation about a girl planning her life out. Here it is along with the written statement;

Animation

A brief explanation of the animation ;
This girl, lets pretend its me, is bored and confused on what to do. But then she starts making plans about her future. Starting from what job she wants to have and working backwards from there. She keeps that in mind and it gives her purpose and a set of things to work towards. She is so happy and fulfilled that she does a cartwheel. The end.

My connection;

I have always loved planning ahead into my future ever since I was a child and I find it fun to research how I need to get there. Thinking about how I can be an agent for my own success is something I want to work on because I know that it will be an important skill to have. Stewardship delegation if you will. I also use my Things app similarly to The Weekly Schedule™️, showing me the most important priorities for the day and the things I need to accomplish.

The Public Victory

Once the public victory is solid, you can move along to the Public Victory. Because “Before you’ll ever win in the public arenas of life, you must first win the private battles within yourself.”

  • Excerpt From: Sean Covey. “7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens.” Apple Books.

The Public Victory teaches you how to become interdependent and how to work with others for the ultimate success.

Habit 4- Think Win-Win

Habit 5- Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood

Habit 6- Synergize

My assessment choice for this segment was writing 3 poems, one for each habit. I have always loved writing poetry so I would say that it was my favourite part of this project;

—————————————————

Win

We all can win

Can we?

No

But somebody doesn’t have to lose

I’ll lose so you can win

No

You will lose so I can win

No

Actually I can help you

If you would lend me a hand?

I will

I will

We both win

In their shoes

Put yourself in her shoes

His shoes

Their shoes

When do they get to be in my shoes?

Later.

Synergy

We don’t work well together

You are so different than me

This will be disastrous

My strengths could make this so good

But they are your weaknesses

So that won’t work

Right?

I didn’t see your strengths

I only saw where you didn’t meet me

But you far surpassed expectations

And I wasted all this time

Thinking that we couldn’t work together

I’ll do this

I am good at this

You’ll do that

You are good at that

This is looking good

Better than I thought it would

Just because we aren’t the same

Doesn’t mean that you’re to blame

———————————————————

Renewal

Ah Renewal. This part is all about self-care. The 4 dimensions of renewal are mental, spiritual, social/emotional, and physical. Mastering renewal means mastering how to take care of your spirit and your vessel, and how you can enhance your greatest asset-> you.

Habit 7- Sharpen the saw

I created a song in garage band but for some reason it has not been exporting properly so I can’t insert it here. But here is the written explanation for it; I chose to make a song for this activity. I wanted to make the song soothing and powerful in a way that makes me think of walking into the woods on a path. The path leads to the future and I am ready to go onward and keep improving with all of the knowledge I gained from this book. I used to go to the Vancouver symphony orchestra a lot as a little kid and I have always been connected to classical music so this piece is near and dear. I think the piece conveys feeling and for me that feeling is the strength that is deep inside.

Audio, Visual and Kinesthetic

To show our final overall understanding of the philosophy of the 7 habits, we created 3 final assessment pieces. These were also supposed to be related to the 3 core competencies that we work on in highschool; Communication, Thinking, and Personal and Social.

For the competency of Thinking, I thought that habits 1, 2 & 3, or the Private Vicory, fit the criteria for the competency in every way. My idea for the visual piece was “A photo of me thinking with sketch notes around me: the sketch notes will be similar to the animation that I did for the private victory assessment choice. About visualizing the future and making a plan to get there.” And here is the final visual;

Then for the audio idea I was going to link it to the communication competency. I think habits 4 and 6 were the best habits to use because I think they are both very important for communicating. My audio idea was as follows “A background audio of a muffled conversation, everything goes too loud. Then there is silence. One person speaks, everyone cheers. : represents how cloudy communication is not functional. Kinda sounds like Charlie Brown teachers.”. And here was the final audio/video;

Communication video

And then for the kinesthetic piece I wanted to create rock sculptures. I thought that rock sculptures would be a deep metaphor for the personal and social competency and represent habits 5 and 7. “Rock balance sculpture on the beach: everything requires balance. Work / life, alone / social, school / activities. A balance of all of the renewal categories ; mind, body, spirit, emotion. Being understood and understanding. The rocks represent that balance. Because they themselves are balancing.” I made one big rock sculpture on the beach and one small rock sculpture that I could bring to school. And here they are;

Rock building Timelapse

A Reflection

The habits are basically my stepping stones to preforming the core competencies. My favourite competency + habits would definitely have to be Thinking with habits 1,2 and 3. I enjoy thinking about the future and taking actions towards my goals. My assessment choice board for the private victory shows this as I imagine that I could be the person in the animation. I also think that there is a lot that I could do to procrastinate less and be more comfortable making decisions, which I think specifically falls under the “Be Proactive” habit. I think that my visual idea of an annotated photo is a good way to show my journey with those habits.

I am quite proficient at the Personal and Social competency and I think I can consistently utilize habits 5 and 7. I am a good listener and very empathetic. And I am also getting better at taking care of my mind, body, spirit, and emotions. The balancing rock sculpture is something that I was very excited to do because I think the symbol of balance is very important to understanding those habits.

The communication competency is a pretty easy one for me because I think I am a good communicator and collaborator. Synergizing comes naturally to me and I think I am effective at thinking out options where there is mutual benefit. I have a pretty clear idea of what I want my audio idea to sound like and I hope it conveys the importance of communication. I kind of hear it sounding a bit like the teachers in Charlie Brown.

I don’t think there really is an end to this project because this will be something that I will always be able to improve on. I hope to look back on this project in the future and see the effects it had on the way I lived my life. I hope you learned something from this because I definitely did. And even though I am not always going to strive to be the MOST effective version of myself allllll the time, I think that following through on the upwards spiral will help me become more effective.

Thank you for reading.

Am I Imagining This Destination?

Have you heard of Destination Imagination?

Destination Imagination (or just DI) is an international competition that our school competes in. I am now going to direct you to the DI website because I think that they do a great job explaining what DI is all about. The Destination Imagination website is here. (I really suggest that you go to the website before reading further.)

The time had come for another gruelling term of Destination Imagination . This year, I was a part of one of two Seycove Gr 9 Improv teams. We got to present in person this year instead of a video like last year. It was a lot more fun but definitely more stressful. Our team “Leap Before you Look” was an improv team. So what was this year’s challenge? Well this year’s challenge was called “Festival Frenzy” and in this challenge, we would try to achieve a random goal at a festival from around the world. We had to research festivals, learn how to successfully carry out improv performances, practice running through the challenge, and enhance our skit with imaginary items, represented by a set of cardboard boxes.

The following is a list of all the festivals. Since we are in the secondary level, we had to research 10 festivals. Our chosen 10 are highlighted.

All of our research went into what we call the “festival binder”. The festival binder started off as a shared pages document that all of our research was recorded in and we later printed it out, so that we could bring a hard copy of it to the final competition. Here is an example of what one of the pages in the festival binder looks like;

When we are about to preform at the tournament, we draw one of those ten festivals randomly, along with a random goal (i.e. go skydiving) and a random “fork in the road” that will come into play later (I.e. make soap or find a way to keep your tools from rusting). The goal does not have to actually be accomplished in the skit but it should be heavily incorporated. The fork in the road comes into play during a 30 second intermission between Act One and Act Two. You then declare which fork in the road activity you will be using and then resume the skit to finish up act 2.

Since we didn’t actually have to create a script or props for our challenge, we had a lot of free time to prepare. We were fairly disorganized at the start and didn’t really start to put tons of work in until later on. Our festival binder was lacking a lot of detail in the beginning but we did end up fixing it towards the end. The unstructured time to practice was quite challenging for certain members of our group and so subsequently we spent way to much time slacking off. Needless to say, this was definitely going to kick us in the ass later if we continued on that way. After a few failed practice performances, we started to get our act together. On the more positive side, I think we definitely showed a lot of growth by the end. Our final performance was pretty good (definitely the best one we had ever done). And even though I screwed up by not finding a watch to bring so we ran out of time for the end of the skit, I think that it still ended in a successful way and I am super proud. Our team was able to bounce ideas off of each other and we worked very well as a group (with maybe a bit too much banter apparently :p).

I know that there are a few things I can work on/hopefully change for participation in DI next year. Our group argued too much and that may just be because we had some clashing personalities but I think it overall did put ourselves at a disadvantage. The banter was never super serious as we all kind of consider each other friends, but I think it was just a bit of a time waster. Speaking of time wasting, we were all easily distracted by unimportant things such as having a irrelevant conversation with someone else. I think that in the end I am super proud of my group and spending time with them was actually quite fun.

And the moment we have all been waiting for, the video of us performing our challenge;

Overall, DI taught me leadership, teamwork, persistence, creativity, and so much more. I am really excited to see how I face future DI challenges in the years ahead. I want to say a huge thank you to my team members, Ben Y, Jocelyn, Noah, and Carter, without whom none of this would’ve been possible. I had a lot of fun with you guys and hopefully we are not in the same group next year 😁.

See you next year Destination imagination 👋🏼!

Learning Advance, Because we Never Retreat.

Now this post is going to be a bit different than my other posts. Yes, this is a reflection post, but this time it is not reflecting on a project that we did at school. The PLP 8s and 9s went away on a learning advance!

A Brief Explanation

So you may be wondering why I am referring to this trip as an advance, and that is because PLP never retreats! Hahaha lmao yeah its basically just a trip away with my class. We went to Loon Lake Lodge in maple ridge from the 14th-17th of February. We took all of the PLP 8s and 9s so I suppose that was maybe about 50+ kids. I was not super excited to go away on this trip just because I was worried that it was going to rain and be miserable but it didn’t end up raining much and was actually quite fun. So without further adieu, lets get into the day to day.

Day 1

Day 1 schedule

Above is the day schedule for our first day at Loon lake. We arrived at school at the normal time in the morning to start our Book (I’ll talk about that later) and get all of our stuff on the luggage bus and ready to go. Then we departed for the long drive over to maple ridge at lunch and the adventure began. We did a nice little trail walk and scavenger hunt activity to help us get to know the area. Then we were assigned our rooms and I was happily surprised to see that I had my bestie Dana as my room buddy. Then the evening moved on and we went to sleep.

Day 2

Day 2 started bright and early with most of us feeling very tired. The food was good and we were ready to start our morning work block. We worked on our “Believe in Good” project, the personal bank account, and our book. Yes I will talk about this infamous book later in this post.Lunch was followed by an outdoor shelter building activity and some time to work on out DI stuff. We then had dinner and evening fun. After a full day of activities we were quite ready to go to bed.

Day 3

Yet again I woke up feeling not very well rested. It was pretty much the same as day 2 but the outdoor activities were battle archery and forest laser tag. I was incredibly cowardly during battle archery because I did not like the skill-intense confrontational aspect of it. I think that  being too cautious is a common theme throughout my life already so it was funny to see it appear here as-well. However I was a god at forest laser tag and really enjoyed that. Laser tag is something that I have always loved and the way that they set up the laser tag with different guns and stuff just made it that much cooler. I ended day 3 early after dinner and just decompressed in my room for the rest of the evening.

Day 4

Day 4 was the last day up at loon lake and I woke up quite well rested because off the early time off I took on the night of day 3. We did our last outdoor activity as capture the flag and then after lunch we set sail for Seycove.

The Book

Now time to explain this “book” that I have been mentioning throughout this post. This book had sections where we would fill out certain prompts each day that we were there. We would work on this book a lot during advisory group time and most of us ended up having to finish the book at home later. I would highly suggest looking through this book because it is a great reflection of my time at look lake.

Conclusion

Overall this was a fun trip and I think I learned more about how I approach taking risks. Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed my book!

As Always, Brooke.

mPOL 2022 Here we go

Hello and welcome to my first mPOL (mid-year presentation of learning). Now normally, this would not be my first mPOL, but because we did not do them in grade 8, this will be my first one. In this mPOL, I will be answering 2 driving questions. “How have I demonstrated growth as a learner so far this year?”, and “How can I sharpen my Learning Plan to ensure I will reach my learning targets by the end of this school year?”

I shall start off with the first question.

How have I demonstrated growth as a learner so far this year?

I feel the best way to show the answer to this would be to start with the projects that I think demonstrated my best work for each class (except maker because that is next semester).

Humanities

“Working with Words”

You can check out my blog post for this project here.

I chose this project because it has been my favourite humanities project that we have done so far. Because of this, I worked hard in the project, and I am really proud of the outcome. I think I enjoyed this project the most because I love poetry and liked how we could really make this project to our own specifications and tailored to us as an individual.

I learned a lot about poetry in this project, as well as presentation skills and public speaking. This project taught me the importance of creativity, looking inward and trying to decipher who you are, and how to bounce ideas off of peers. I think during this project is when I grew most and had the most fun in school since the beginning of the year.

Scimatics

“Chemistry stories“

You can check out my blog post for this project here.

I chose this project because I think it shows my perseverance. I was struggling internally a lot during the time of this project so I am proud that I was still able to produce good quality work. I also enjoyed learning more about atoms and the processes that go into making the matter that is all around us.

How can I sharpen my Learning Plan to ensure I will reach my learning targets by the end of this school year?

Though I think that my learning plan is has good goals for me to work towards in the rest of the year, I am actually quite content with not meeting the proficiency requirements that I have set on my learning plan. Due to the recent influx of stress, I have come to the conclusion that my mental health was being damaged greatly by trying really hard for extending marks and always being 100% attentive. So yes, I would still like to get extending marks whenever I can but I am not going to be disappointed if my grades do not match what I have set on my learning plan.

Some things that I feel I have done well at that are in my learning plan would be;

  1. I have been using things regularly for both school and non school related tasks and it has helped me greatly.
  2. I have set up routines that help me focus on my homework and help me not to get discouraged.
  3. I have been using more positive affirmations to help me balance mental health with academics.
  4. I have been asking my peers/parents more often when I need clarification on concepts that I do not understand.

Some areas that I want to have more growth in by the end of the year would be;

  1. Asking my teachers for help when I need it.
  2. Give myself more time to write better reflections and responses (humanities).
  3. Take more notes when I think I may forget the information that if being shared. Especially when I am having a hard time being “present” in class.
  4. Starting homework asap so that I don’t put it off until the point where I am then rushing to get it done.

I hope you enjoyed my mPOL and I will see you again at the tPOL’s! (Transitional presentation of learning)

As always, Brooke.

Work, Work, Work!

Wednesday Nov 3, 2021. I did not go to school on Wednesday. Why? To go to work!

Wednesday was nation wide “Take Our Kids To Work Day”. I went to work with my mom at Pacific Blue Cross BC. I had been to my mom’s work many times before but this time I would be shadowing her for the whole day.

Not going to school didn’t mean that I could just sit around and do nothing at my moms work all day, no, I was filming like crazy. We were instructed to create a video showcasing our day at work with our expectations/review and an interview.

Without further ado, here is the video;

I would say that the best part of my day was a tie between having a nice lunch out at the hotel for the Burnaby Board of Trade awards luncheon or having some 1 on 1 time with some of my mom’s colleges and get to know them and what they do at the company.

Both this blog post and the video are quite short today but hopefully this got the point across. It is definitely not my most interesting post either but hopefully you found the video a least a little entertaining.

Thank you for watching/reading!

As always, Brooke.

Destination Imagination; In theory.

I got the opportunity to be on one of the scientific challenge teams. The scientific challenge this year was called “In Theory”. You had to break or bend a scientific law using technical methods and create a documentary film about it. My group spent AGES trying to decide on a scientific law to bend. It was a tad bit stressful seeing as the scientific law is the most important part of out solution to the challenge. We ended up figuring out that we could bend the law of buoyancy by creating an electromagnet out of an iron bolt and some batteries. (Huge shoutout to my teammate Nolan for heading up the scientific part of this challenge!) Here is a video of the anti-buoyancy machine;

We also had to come up with a story that our documentary would follow. The story had to include a witness who sees and reacts to the law being bent/broken and an expert who has great knowledge of the scientific law itself. Again we had many ideas and a very hard time deciding on a plot for our story, it was a painful process.

Usually DI tournaments would start in-person at a regional level but with COVID-19 being a thing, the process changed to just handing in a video to be judged at the national level.

After many, many, MANY weeks of working on our challenge solution, it came to an end. Here is the final video;

We also made a Q&A video to go along with our challenge solution that explains some things that you may not have picked up in the final video;

One of my teammates also made this blooper video that I LOVE because it reminds me of how much fun we had during DI.

Overall, DI taught me leadership, teamwork, persistence, creativity, and so much more! I am really excited to see how I face future DI challenges in the years ahead of me. I want to say a huge thank you to my team members, Nolan, Jocelyn, Santiago, and Carter, without whom none of this would’ve been possible.

See you next year Destination imagination 👋🏼!

As always, Brooke.

Do I have a growth mindset?

Ah

Welcome back my friends.

I would like to present a book to you. This book is about something called a growth mindset.

I have been keeping a reflection journal as we learned about growth mindsets in class. I hope that you take a quick look through my book because I have been working pretty hard on it. Here it is;

The next part of this project is creating a statement/goal for my growth mindset. This statement will go along with a selfie of my face. MY FACE 😬. I think that the thought of a selfie of my face being in the class is a whole other challenge that I need to tackle  with a growth mindset. But what’s done is done and I know that I will move on from the embarrassment.

My statement for the selfie is “When I receive criticism, I will review my work with an open mindset and apply specific revisions so that I can feel more confident taking on academic risks when I know that I can deal with having a First Attempt In Learning.”. Now if you read my journal, you would know that I talk a lot about my fixed mindset on academic failure.

Page from my book

That photo is a page from my book where I went in-depth about my mindset on academics, achievement and failure. On the next page I talk about three things that I will try to do to change my fixed mindset into a growth mindset, and my selfie statement is basically trying to do the same thing.

My selfie w/ statement

I believe that this growth mindset challenge will be something that I have to work on for the rest of eternity and I challenge YOU to do the same. Thank you for taking the time to read my post and it would be awesome if you could leave a comment about something that you have a fixed mindset about that you want to change.

As always, Brooke.

Student Blogging Challenge; a reflection.

Hi everyone 👋🏼

Unfortunately this will be the last Student Blogging Challenge post for this year.

If you didn’t already notice, I have been taking part in the 2021 Student Blogging Challenge. We accomplished 10 SBC prompts for our blogs. You can find 10 similar prompts here.

I can definitely say that over the course of this challenge I have seen my blog and my blogging skills greatly improve. We started off the challenge with simply updating the about me page and making some commenting guidelines to improve the quality of our site. We also looked at the themes of our blogs and learned about blog layout. At the beginning, I was sceptical that I would really enjoy blogging. But now that I’ve had so much fun making cool posts, its not so bad.

I would have to say that my favourite SBC post would have to be either Worm the hero or A dive into literature; poetry. I was thinking of maybe doing a dive into literature series where I talk about different types of literature. Maybe I’ll crank another post out this spring break and keep it an on going thing? Possible topics could include classic novels, song lyrics, quotes, folklore, fairytales, legends, and if there is any other topics I didn’t already list, comment them down below!

The blogging challenge has given me the opportunity to learn how to express my ideas through a type of medium that I probably wouldn’t have used otherwise. I think that I have started to learn how to show my voice in my writing. Thank you for taking the time to read my post.

As always, Brooke.

p.s. – Here are all of the posts that I made in the student blogging Challenge.

Day 1- About me page

Day 2- Commenting guidelines

Day 3- Embedded content

Day 4- Fun with photos

Day 5- Appearance and Widget – this prompt wasn’t an actual post. I changed the appearance of my blog and added a calendar widget.

Day 6- Music

Day 7- Emoji story

Day 8- Blogging like a boss – Again this prompt wasn’t a post but more of a check-in on our summative blogging skills. We had to go through our most recent summative post and look at the aspects of a summative post that we should have included.

Day 9- holidays and festivities

Day 10- Free choice

A dive into literature; Poetry.

Welcome back to my post.

Now I don’t really like to boast,

But if your like me,

You’d like to be,

On the beautiful west coast.

Do you know what type of poem that is? It’s called a limerick. A limerick is a fairly common type of poem that you have probably heard before. Limericks are usually more humorous poems that always have five lines. They follow the pattern of AABBA, meaning that all of the A’s rhyme with each other and vice versa for the B’s. To make that even more clear, the first, second, and fifth line all rhyme, and the third and forth lines rhyme with only each other and are also shorter than the others.

Other popular types of poetry are:

Haiku

Free verse

Sonnet

Epic

Ode

And those are only a few!

Poetry can be used to share messages, tell stories, feel emotions, make someone laugh, and practically every other thing you can think of can be conveyed through poetry! You probably would have written some in Elementry school for Mothers or Father’s Day.

I personally really like to read and write poetry in my free time. (correction- I actually have no free time because my horse has been oh so generous and filled all my free time for me.)

One of my favourite poetry authors is Edgar Allan Poe. My favourite poem of his is rather famous, its called The Raven.

It’s a rather dark poem, as most of Poe’s literature is, but I think that I could read it 100 times and like it all the same.

Anyhoo I think that my post should end here with a little poetry prompt for you;

I prompt you to write a poem about someone or something that you love. It can be any type of poem but I would suggest a sonnet or an ode.

Thank you for reading.

As always, Brooke.
