Balance…

Hello, we’ve just finished a project in PGP. It was all about creating balance in your life. The Driving Question for this project was “How Does Balance in my Life Create Opportunities?”. Ok onto the post.

This project had three main ideas which were: Positive Brain Training, The 7 Habits, and The Atomic Habits.

So Positive Brain Training is the idea that you do one of the things to get your brain in a better mindset. To do this we did one different thing for each day of the week. Here is an image of it.

So on each of these days we did a certain thing. However we went on our Field Study in the middle and stopped doing them. The day that was most important to me, and is the day that I continue doing is, Exercise I get some form of exercise in everyday. The reason I continued this habit is because its the only one I found effective for clearing my mind and getting in a better mindset. The habit I struggled with the most would be the meditation day. This is because I’ve never really liked meditation for two reasons. The first, being that I don’t find it effective for clearing my mind as my thoughts wander and go super fast whenever I’m not actively focusing on or doing something. The second reason is that I can’t sit still long enough for meditation to be effective, I always fidget or move or do something that disrupts the meditation.

The second part of this of this project is something you might remember from last year. Which is The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (⬅️ Link to 7 Habits Blog).

So to review the 7 habits are:

  1. Be Proactive
  2. Begin With The End in Mind
  3. Put First Things First
  4. Think Win-Win
  5. Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood
  6. Synergize
  7. Sharpen the Saw

These habits are designed to make your life more effective and productive. The habit that I find the most helpful is Think Win-Win. Which means think of way you and someone else can work together to make something great. The reason I like this habit the most is because teams are great, because there’s people to support you. For example on a hockey team if you don’t play well or can’t make it to a game. There are others who can either play for you, or pick up where you fall short, therefore making it more effective.

The 3rd and final aspect of the project was reading the Atomic Habits book. This book is all about the little changes we can make to our lives and the steps to do it, its also about reversing bad habits and instilling good ones. This book was very interesting as the author made several points that I found interesting and helpful. For example he talks about when building a new habit to make it easy and attractive, even more interesting however is what he says about getting rid of bad habits. Its simple but effective he says make it hard to do and eliminate any reward or good feeling when you do this habit.

Now to answer the Driving Question. Which is: “How Does Balance in my Life Create Opportunities?”. The way I see it, is if your always spending too much time on one things then you won’t have any opportunities to do anything else. Take work or school for an example, if you spend to much time say writing blogposts then you won’t have time for other activities such as sports, music, or hanging out with friends. Being balanced and not doing too much of one thing will lead to happier, healthier lifestyle.
