Words in the Woods

Words in the Woods

The Camper
Night ‘neath the northern skies, lone, black, and grim:
Naught but the starlight lies ‘twixt heaven, and him.

Of man no need has he, of God, no prayer;
He and his Deity are brothers there.

Above his bivouac the firs fling down
Through branches gaunt and black, their needles brown.

Afar some mountains streams, rockbound and fleet,
Sing themselves through his dreams in cadence sweet,

The pine trees whispering, the heron’s cry,
The plover’s passing wing, his lullaby.

And blinking overhead the white stars keep.
Watch o’er his hemlock bed – his sinless sleep.

Today Was Pink Shirt Day, and…

Wednesday, February 26 was Pink Shirt Day and…

I missed an opportunity. I am sorry.

Pink Shirt Day should be a celebration of kindness and respect of others. It deserves a loud celebration of acceptance and tolerance. Today, I let it go by with a whimper.

I did not do much today about Pink Shirt Day. Teachers did, but I was too quiet. I did not find a pink shirt to wear. I didn’t even wear my pink tie. I told myself I was too busy. I didn’t have time.

Sorry Doug. For some things, you make time.

Last night at the PAC meeting, one of our parents reminded me about a poet whose video would be good for Pink Shirt Day. I did not get to it today, so tonight I am taking the time to watch it. Thanks Laurel for the suggestion. I liked it, and I think you may find Shane Koyczan’s To This Day video good to watch as well.

My favourite quote from Shane Koyczan was not on this video: “Standing up for yourself doesn’t have to mean embracing violence.”

As a culture, we still have a lot to do to promote acceptance, tolerance, kindness, compassion, respect, fairness and forgiveness. I may not have done anything special on Pink Shirt Day, but I have time to make up for it. Be patient. I will do something.

Youtube shows some links to videos on the right hand side of the screen. Sarah Kay’s If I Should Have a Daughter was one that was listed, and I remember viewing last year. I liked it then, and I like it now. I may have shared it before. It’s worth watching more than once.

“There is nothing more beautiful than the way the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline no matter how many times it is sent away.” ~ Sarah Kay

Both poets would do well at our Words in the Woods event.

I still need to find a Pink Shirt.

Snowy Day

snowman tireswingWe had some snow today at Cleveland Elementary School. Some grade 6s decided that their snowman/snow person wanted to try out our tire swing. I think he is smiling in the picture, but it is hard to tell.

There were a lot of children who seemed quite happy in the snow. Some played soccer, some played tag, while others were sent in for throwing snowballs. There were many students fully prepared to play outdoors, while some elected to wear only a hoodie or running shoes.

Some students felt the school should have been closed for a snow day. For those of you who read this blog in Quebec, snow here on a school day is rare. Any sign of snow, and children want a snow day. I feel like I should make up a story about “When I was young…” when they ask for a snow day. The reality is, there were some great snowfalls when I was a kid, and we had some great times building forts after school or on weekends. I don’t remember any snow days in Dollard des Ormeaux, but some people might.

Sorry kids. There is not enough snow to close our school here in North Vancouver. Some schools have more snow than us, and there was no snow on the ground where I live in North Vancouver. School will be open again tomorrow.

We expect more snow tonight, but rain should come and wash some of that away. The roads will be slick tomorrow, so please be careful out there.

Have a Good Weekend

relaxI hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. We had a lot going on this week here at Cleveland; Olympic excitement, hail and snow, some rain and sunshine, volleyball, a social media presentation from Handsworth, sexual health lessons, a parent workshop, tie died shirts, project backpack, earthquake drill, etc.

My plan is to relax a bit this weekend.

Words in the Woods – Hint #7

The beauty of the trees,
the softness of the air,
the fragrance of the grass,
speaks to me.

The summit of the mountain,
the thunder of the sky,
the rhythm of the sea,
speaks to me.

The faintness of the stars,
the freshness of the morning,
the dew drop on the flower,
speaks to me.

The strength of the fire,
the taste of the salmon,
the trail of the sun,
and the life that never goes away,
They speak to me.

And my heart soars.

~ Chief Dan George

See you Monday.

Gold For Team Canada

Congratulations to Team Canada’s women’s hockey team. We tried to watch today via the CBC web cast, but we could not see the whole thing. Our streaming video stopped at around 10:15 am, and we were without a picture. Some people used their phones to listen to the games in their classes, while some people followed along on radio.

When we found out that the score was 2-2 and they were going into overtime, we announced it over our public address system. There were cheers throughout the school.

Just before noon, more cheers were heard throughout the school, and Victoria (grade 7) came and let me know that Canada had won, and she wanted it announced over the PA. So Victoria announced the winning score. 3-2 for Canada.

Well done.

We were also pleased this morning to hear about the gold medal in women’s curling.
