Salmon Are Coming

IMG_2042Once again, we will be raising salmon at Cleveland School. The salmon tanks were set up by Mme Cusanelli and our Salmon Squad (Krista, Aj, Tiana, Kobi, Cameron, Cole, Jack and Mone). Thanks team. The set up looks great.

There seems to be a lot of interest from students as they walk by the two tanks. We have one in the library and one in the front hallway (near the gym). We expect the eggs to arrive next week and we will post an announcement when the eggs arrive.

The salmon should be with us until some time in April, when Mme Cusanelli’s grade 2 class (and the Salmon Squad) takes them to a local creek to release them.

Please visit the Vancouver Aquarium web site to learn more about salmon.

Student Helpers

Screen Shot 2015-01-14 at 2.15.50 PMWhen you visit Cleveland Elementary School, you will often see students helping out around the school. Students are often volunteering their time at recess and lunch. They help with sports equipment, lunch monitoring, unlocking school doors, tutoring other students, setting up volleyball nets, taking photos for the grade 7 year book, working as Playground Pals, making the daily announcements over the public address system, setting up and maintaining the two salmon tanks, checking in or out library books, etc. The list is long. I may have mentioned this before.

Now, thanks to a few of our grade 7 students, we have Student Helper ID’s. Some of our grade 7 students spent their break time in my office designing, printing and organizing these badges for all teachers. Thanks grade 7s.

These ID’s are used by students throughout the school when they are helping us out. Students seemed quite pleased to wear these badges. It makes them feel official.

If you see a student wearing a Student Helper badge, can you please say Thank You to them? It would mean a lot.

New Students

2015 has started with us receiving four new students today. We have new students in grade 2 (division E05), grade 4 (E04), grade 5 (E03) and grade 6 (E01).

It’s a great way to start the year off. I know our students will make these new students feel welcome.

Buddy Benches

Prior to our recent winter break, I received a number of letters (approximately 30) from students in two classes asking me to consider installing a “Buddy Bench” at Cleveland. The letters were from students in grades 5 and they were quite clear about why they want us to get a buddy bench.

  • “A buddy bench is a special bench that helps kids make new friends.”
  • “…help new students feel more welcome and have fun…”
  • “We don’t have many people who are lonely at Cleveland, but there are a few…”
  • “…it makes kids feel like they belong..”
  • “When I came to this school I didn’t have any friends, so that’s why I want to be a friend with all the new kids in this school.”
  • “The buddy bench would make the school a better place.”
  • “Si on a un Buddy Bench à Cleveland, beaucoup plus de person dans notre école peuvent avoir des amies.”

I looked up “Buddy Benches” online, and found the following:

This is definitely and idea worth pursuing. I may need to find some help with funding, and will definitely need some help from the grade 5s about where to place a bench (or benches).

I will follow up with the students and staff and see where this leads.
