Km Club

Today is the first day for Km Club at Cleveland this year. We hope to see all our students out for a morning walk or run. I will be joining them soon.

Thanks to all the volunteers for helping to make our Km Club happen.

The Problem with Sunny Days

Today was one of those wonderfully sunny days where one realizes how lucky one is to live on the West Coast. A warm Spring day, with the sun shining and birds singing.

We had a number of classes outside throughout the day. Who could have a problem on a day like today?

IMG_4247The answer the the above questions: Parents. Parents may soon have to go shopping for new sweatshirts. This can become quite expensive.

As I was heading out today I spotted a number of sweatshirts or jackets outside on our playground. I went out and gathered up a bunch to bring to our lost & found. One item was immediately claimed by a student who was at the Kids Club after school. The other items have now been added to our collection of hoodies, bags, plastic bottles and one towel (Not sure why we have a towel).

Some items have names on them (I’m talking to you Ewan). Other items have no identifying marks.

If your child has fewer hoodies at home, try coming to Cleveland and browse through our wonderful selection of colouful sweatshirts and tops. If no one comes, we will find them a good home.

The Day of Silence

Some of our grade 7 students have taken a pledge to be silent today. Mone, Avin, Kristjana, Fanny and Iiona shared the following information with me this morning.

“Please understand my reason for not speaking today. I am participating in The Day of Silence, a national youth movement protesting the silence faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their allies. My deliberate silence is caused by the prejudice, harassment, and discrimination that LGBT teens have to suffer from on a daily basis. I believe that ending silence is the first step towards fighting these inequities.”

For more information on this day, please visit the Day of Silence web site.

Thank you students to bringing this important idea to our school. We need to be a school where everyone feels that they belong.

Home Renovations

DSCF0117We have recently observed a new neighbour moving in to our school. A pair of Northern Flickers moved into our courtyard on Wednesday evening, and they are busy setting up their new home. They have been quite industrious during the school days and evenings.

While I have not yet been able to get a picture of them (I think they’re shy), I was able to see the results of their home renovation skills. On Wednesday evening, they opened the door to their new home and started to remove things that were in the way (insulation). The picture above shows the results of their renovation work. I hope they clean up, but I expect it will be up to one of us to take care of the mess.

I look forward to hearing the sounds of baby Flickers in the coming months.
