Orange Shirt Day

2015-09-29 15.52.08This morning the students heard a little bit about Orange Shirt Day over the public address system. I encourage everyone to participate by wearing an orange shirt or wearing something orange.

The 3rd Annual Orange Shirt Day to commemorate the Indian Residential School experience is Wednesday, September 30th.

Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity to create meaningful discussion about the effects of Residential Schools and the legacy they have left behind.  It’s a day for survivors to be reaffirmed that they matter and so do those that have been affected.

Every Child Matters.  Wear something orange to show that you care.

As a school, we want to honour First Nations traditions, cultures and traditional teachings and education. As we move forward in education our future teachings and learning will include the First Peoples Principles of Learning.

It will be a great journey. Come along.

Friday at Cap

It was a wonderful day at school today. We ran our annual Terry Fox/Nancy Leith Run for cancer in the afternoon, and the students did an excellent job.

Many of us know Terry Fox, but may not know about Nancy Leith. Nancy was a long-time parent volunteer (18 years) at Capilano who contributed in many ways to the school culture.

Today our students ran and raised money in honour of Terry and Nancy.

Thank you to the many parent volunteers who made today a wonderful success. We could not have done this without you.

Thank you to the Leith family for joining us today.

Many thanks to the grade 7 students for their leadership during the assembly and for helping our Kindergarten students have a successful run.

Thanks as well to all the students and families who have brought in donations for cancer research.

Have a great weekend. Remember kids, no school on Monday.

Book Tasting

2015-09-22 08.08.33The grade 5 classes have invited me to take part in their “Book “Tasting” afternoon. It starts at 1:30 pm, and I am looking forward to seeing all the wonderful books that the students have selected for their book talk. I was asked to select a book that had meaning for me.

I love books. I have been known to read a lot. I have a hard time thinking about which book means the most to me. My first love was Dr. Seuss. I still have a copy of Horton Hears a Who! that my family gave me in 1969. At some point in time my favourite books could have been; The Hobbit, Dune, The Power of One, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, The Foundation Trilogy, Alice in Wonderland, Winnie the Pooh, Of Mice and Men and Cannery Row.

Today, I have decided to go with The Sneetches and Other Stories by Dr. Seuss. If you have not read this, I strongly suggest you do so. Sneetches are great.

Have you talked to your children about your favourite books? Find time to share. Book talks are great for homes.

I can only be at the Book Tasting for a short period of time, as I will be teaching gym to one of the Kindergarten classes at 2:00 pm. We’re going to have a blast.

Hanging Out at Recess

2015-09-21 10.38.04I spent some time today hanging around our lower playground. Well, I wasn’t really hanging around like the children in the picture. I was just spending time on the adventure playground.

2015-09-21 10.37.09According to the students, it is “Great!” and “Awesome!” and they love to play on it. There were soccer games around the structure, and many multi-aged games happening. I think the grade 7 girls were keeping up with the Kindergarten students in tag.

The Capilano students are very lucky to have such a wonderful playground. Students can run and play on the adventure play structures, among the trees, over the hills, on the soccer fields, in the basketball or tennis court areas, in the front of the school and the undercover. They play tag, four-square, soccer, football, tetherball or other games. They have fun.

I look forward to seeing many more days filled with fun and laughter during our recess and lunch breaks.
