Lock Down Drills

This morning, Capilano Elementary School participated in a lock down drill. This was part of a district wide (North Vancouver School District) lock down drill. In some schools, the RCMP or other emergency responders assisted schools in their drills. Here at Capilano, we took care of the drill ourselves.

I am happy to report that all students were great during our drill. Classes followed proper lock down procedures and could not be heard from the hallways. Thanks to everyone for making this drill a success.

Pink Shirt Day 2017

Today is Pink Shirt Day, a day where we focus our attention on treating one another with respect and kindness. Our grade 2 and 5 students have been making announcements over the last couple of weeks reminding everyone to demonstrate caring towards others. We shared with students the ideas from the Real Acts of Caring web site, and they created a series of messages for our morning announcements.

Some sample messages from the grades 2 and 5 students:

  • “Performing acts of kindness boosts the positive energy of both the one who gives and the one who receives!”
  • “Real acts of kindness means doing something unexpected, done for no reason and without expecting anything in return.”

Staff are giving out hearts to students to record their acts of kindness or caring. I am enjoying reading them as they are posted up throughout the school.

We look forward to seeing acts of kindness and caring from all our students.

Rainy Day Today

Rain is falling at school today, and it starting to wash away some of our snow. This will be a disappointment to some of our young winter enthusiasts.

The playground will be wet and mushy, so I am hoping students wear good, waterproof footwear. We already have a few students here who need a change of socks.

Have a wonderful, wet, wintery day.

Morning Announcements

Every morning, we start the day off with morning announcements. Today, we had several students announcing. The grade 7’s have been in charge of the announcements for most of the school year, and today they were joined by students in grades 2 and grade 5.

Our students made announcements today about the green team, waste free lunch and keeping our playgrounds litter free. A regular feature is to wish happy birthday to all students who are celebrating their birthdays. For students who celebrate their birthdays on the weekends, we announcement on Fridays.

It is great to start the day hearing our students making announcements to help our school be a more positive and environmentally friendly school. Keep up the great work kids.
