Why I am Proud to Be Canadian, Eh

As you know already I am a Canadian, or well I should hope so becuase my whole page is Canadian. Anyways in class we started an assignment that involves making a video about what makes us proud to be Canadian. After we made the video we had to put a little ending on it to have it put in this competition for who has the best video on this website, if you win then you get a big prize, which would be cool. The reason why I am proud to be Canadian was from our war effort in WWII, the main thing that me proud was Canadians being fearless in war.  What they did was climb on the Germans tanks and the Germans actually had to shoot there own tanks just to get them off, and how they fought even though they new they were going to die at some points. Here is my video, eh.

Math Monster, Eh

The title as you can see is quite odd. In math class we did this assignment that had to relate to our humanities unit. We had to create a monster that wasn’t very tall but had to be able to stand up. The unit that we were learning about involved finding the surface area and the volume and things like that. We learned about the math and figured out how to figure out the surface area and volume of multiple shapes stacked on top of each other, an example is like a cylinder on top of a square, and then being told to figure out what the surface area and volume of those to shapes combined together is. We were then told by our teacher make a “monster”  out of everyday materials that we could find.

I built mine using random stuff that I just found wherever I could, I used a lot of duct tape, the arms and legs were toilet paper rolls, the torso was made out of a pop can, and the head was a ball of styrofoam. I told you it was a bunch of random crap. Some people went out and bought specific parts for it, I just found stuff around my house that would work.  We then ended up using it in our frankenstuffie unit. That is how I made a monster, eh.

SLC’s , Eh

It is now time for SLC’s again which is not the most exciting thing in the world. If you don’t know what it stands for it is Student Led Conferences, they are basically another version of Parent Teacher Interviews or PTI’s. They are very stressful and you have to prepare a lot for them. This is what I am going to say to my teachers.

I had to talk about 3 things what I am most proud of, which was my project, Blue Sky Project, which I have already written about on my blog so if you want you can go check that out.

Big Exibition, Eh

The next thing I talked about is an example of my learning, which was my florida trip, which I have also written in a blog post.

Lots of Field Schools, Eh

The next thing I talked about was something that showed a growth mindset, for this year what showed a growth mindset was something from DI which I also showed another post, and the reason for that is because we werent very prepared for regionals but we still managed to pull it together with the big time crunch we had.

Regionals, Eh

I then had to talk about 3 goals that I was going to have here they are. My first goal is for me to improve my essay writing because I have found that I didn’t prepare enough and it showed in the essay. Also another way for me to improve my essay writing is pay more attention to Mr.Featherstone’s rubric. My second goal is stop procrastinating so much. The way I am going to stop is by once I get assigned something I am going to start working on it. My third goal is to continue with my goal that I made at the beginning of this year, which is give more ideas in group projects and contribute more. Which I will do by being more engaged in brainstorming.

I know Ill be there, eh.

Work, Eh

You might know that I have job, its definitely not very glorious, but I like it. My job is dishwashing for a restaurant for a place called Northlands, its a golf club and a restaurant so most of our business comes in the summer. During the school year I only work Fridays, but when it gets to the Summer I sometimes get working around 3 or 4 days but sometimes 5. I enjoy working where I work because of the people I work with. My boss has known me since I was a baby because I have been going there with my family for a very long time. I get paid minimum wage and get a free meal every time I work. It’s only a short bike ride away from my house so it’s not hard to get to. The shifts I work are either 12pm to 5pm or 5pm to closing, sometimes its 3pm to closing. Closing hours can range from when its really slow which is around 8pm all the way to a big party which is like after 11pm. The longest I have worked is one time in the summer when the other dishwasher cancelled last second so I had to take his shift and do my shift as well, plus there was a really big party going on I worked from 12pm to about 11:30. One of the best parts about my job is the head chef likes to go paint balling, and last year he took me and he won a paintball gun in a raffle an gave it to me because his paintball guns were a lot better. After the day of paintballin was done we both had our share of welts, I had one that I got like 30 seconds in to the match right in the forehead just above my mask.

That is the gun I got.

We also did a secret santa a couple months back, and I got my co-worker a Shirt with my face on it saying favourite dishwasher. Every body thought it was hilarious.

My jobs great, eh.

Alice in Wonderland, Eh

In class we have learned about wonder and imagination. We also read Alice in Wonderland. The whole point of us reading it was to do an… essay, one of the most dreaded words in all of school. For a while we had to learn about how to write a proper essay and that was kind of hard to wrap my brain around. After learning everything we needed to we were given some preperation sheets to get ready for it and basically have something to bring in that will remind us what we wanted to right about. We were given 40 minutes to write the essay which some people finished others didn’t I finished with around 680 words. Other people had close to 1000 and some people had, around 250. The topic of the essay was “How are Viewers Drawn to Imaginary Worlds” we had to use quotes and things from Alice and Wonderland. I thought that I did a pretty good job concidering I am not a very good writer.

Basically what my teacher told me

Here is my essay.

How are Viewers Drawn to Imaginary Worlds?
The Peter Pan effect is a phenomenon known all over the world and a reason why individuals are drawn to imaginary worlds. Just about everybody is drawn to imaginary worlds in many ways. I will give three examples which supports this fact. These include, the term escapism, the need for a hero, and the basis of good versus evil.

Escapism, the first reason for that is that people want to escape from their ordinary life. People find their lives boring, because they are constantly working and aren’t having fulfillment and they regret growing up which then I link back to the Peter Pan effect, which means you don’t want to grow up. People also end up daydreaming because their mind wants to be somewhere else where it can run free and nothing matters. A really big reason is that you can basically forget about your life, like how some people just curl up with good book and forget about their surroundings. An examples of this is in Alice and Wonderland, Alice wakes up near the end of the book and finds out it was all a dream, which shows that she was bored with just sitting next to her sister on that hill. This also brings the reader to want to have a role model or a hero.

The need for a Hero is a big reason for why people are drawn into fantastical worlds. One of the main reasons why it is so important is that it is somebody to look up to, and somebody that you want to be. The hero overcomes things no matter the odds which gives you hope, with the readers they can relate to as their biggest challenge in their own lives. “Seeing such a character triumph against evil empowers us to aspire to do something great that can change the world around us.” (Evan Morgan; The Appeal of Fantasy, paragraph 5) the quote by Evan Morgan is so true with how it empowers the reader. There is also usually an evil force for the hero to face.

The third and final example is that the idea of good versus evil draws to fantastical worlds. One reason for that is that it makes the reader feel good when the protagonist overcomes the antagonist so good triumphs over evil. The idea of two forces — one good and the other evil — in a constant struggle against each other has been around for a very long time.” (Evan Morgan; The Appeal of Fantasy, paragraph 4) This quote basically states that good versus evil used a lot to intrigue the reader. The final reason on good versus evil is that the struggle between two forces helps the audience relate to the audiences own life and makes the audience feel like the protagonist in story.

These are the three main reasons why people are drawn into imaginary worlds, and they are reasons why people would stay with the story all of the way through. There are still many reasons why people are drawn into imaginary worlds but, escapism, the need for a hero and the idea of good versus evil are some of the main common threads which attract individuals to get lost in imaginary worlds.

I hope that wasnt too boring but, but I passed eh.

Regionals, Eh

In school my teachers decided to make us do a project tournament thing called Destination Imagination or DI. The whole basis for D.I. is that you are given something to do with a certain set of rules. In my groups case, we had a technical challenge, so we had to create a “stage” that would move one of our group members from one place to another while incorporating a story into it. Our story was a farmer finds a time machine and travels to the future and meets his future self and finds out that all of the farms had been turned into factory’s and that there was a massive war going on. After that happened he went back in time and stayed as a farmer. This tournament has 3 stages regionals, provincials and globals. Recently my group went to regionals and we came in first in that project, but there is also something called and Instant Challenge or IC. IC’s are challenges that you are told nothing about until they happen, and you are given are a certain amount of time to complete the task. It is mostly just improvisation and team work. We also came in first for the instant challenge as well. Which made us move on to provincials. I dont really know much about what happened regionals because I was in Whistler while it happened. I will be able to go to provincials but one of the other group members will not be there so I will fill in for him and take his part in the play. Guess I’ll be talking about provincials in a month, eh

 This is so true, eh.
