A Post About Quality Commenting

Hello!

I’m back with another SBC post: Commenting! Reading others’ blogs and leaving comments is one of the best parts of the Student Blogging Challenge, so this is exciting! My last attempt at a commenting post was pathetic, so this time I‘m trying to step up my game.

One thing I’ve realized is that I can put commenting guidelines on my homepage! I’ve been trying to figure out what to do on there for ages. I will make sure to include them in this post, too.

When you comment, it is important to do it well. You are essentially giving someone that you don’t know feedback on their blog post, so you should be kind. Here is the template that I generally follow when I comment on peoples’ blogs.

This is a comment that I left on Lyrics’s blog after she commented on mine. It’s always a good idea to moderate your comments quickly, respond to them, and then check out your visiter’s blog and leave a comment there! It is encouraging to commenters because it show that you are engaged and are reading comments  in your blog.

Now that you know what types of comments are welcomed by bloggers, you need to know how to leave them! Obviously if you’re reading this post, you know how to at least find student’s blogs, and presumably can figure it out from there. It’s really simple!

I made a low-quality video using the Screen Recording feature and a tool called Explain Everything to show you how to leave comments. Please excuse the construction noises in the background and the poor editing choices I made.

Presumably you’ve watched that now. Let’s move on.

The next task was to teach people how to comment using HTML. HTML means Hypertext Markup Language, and is basically a code used for writing things online. Here a screenshot of the HTML used to write this post.

As you can see, it isn’t that complicated. However, it is too complicated for me to explain in this blog post without it turning into another 1533-word post, so I will leave a link to a  helpful blog that I read and be done with it. Sorry if that’s cheating.

Alright. Last but not least, I will show some comments that I left on others’ blogs last week. I have chosen 3.

This is a comment I left on Kerija’s blog. She mentioned that she was part Russian, which I am too. Though she is still learning English, I thought it was impressive how well-written and grammatically correct her post was, which I told her. Lastly, she mentioned that she liked singing. Unfortunately my singing voice is… questionable, so I couldn’t really relate.

Next, I left a comment on Charlene’s blog. She lives in the same province as me, and mentioned on her About Me page that she had a dog. I also have a dog, so I told her about him. Her avatar was riding an elephant, which was interesting. She also looks sort of like my sister, Amy.

Finally, I commented on the blog of L’École de Brindas, a class in France. I have been learning French for a while, but moved to an English school last year and stopped speaking the language. It was more challenging than I would like to admit to write this comment. It had numerous grammatical errors.
This class talked about how the liked to include everyone and were kind no matter what. I told them that that seemed like it would make for a super lovely and supportive learning environment.

So that wraps up this week’s post! Feel free to put your commenting skills into practice and leave one here (hint, hint)!

Until next time!

Cheers,

Evelyn 👩🏽

  3. Wow, Evelyn. You genuinely have a take care of on blogging!
Lots of incredible commands here – perhaps sufficient for numerous posts? Regular site visitors on your weblog might possibly be organized for all of the elements you’re capable of offer – and those like Kate who revel in writing.

      Hi Rishu! Thanks for commenting!
This was a pretty big post. Most of my blog posts are excessively long because I have no self-control in terms of making myself stop writing and am not great at editing. I’m glad it was informative though!
I hope you’re having a good day! Stay safe!
      Cheers,
      Evelyn

  4. Wow, Evelyn. You really have a handle on blogging!

Lots of great instructions here – maybe enough for several posts? Regular visitors to your blog would probably be prepared for all the detail you are able to provide – and people like Kate who enjoy writing. And the extra external links you provide for more detail – good for feedback and connection too.

I hope you are getting some conversations going with others across the globe at this crazy time of COVID-19. Blogging is a great tool for connection. What more can I say?

      Hi Linda!
      Thanks so much for commenting!

I’m glad you like my post. Sorry that it’s so long! I often get carried away when I write posts. I will get through the introduction and then realize that I’ve written 5 paragraphs already, but I don’t want to get rid of any of it! At there is lots of content, like you said.

I do love to comment. It’s really fun to talk to people about their experiences with COVID-19 and other random topics. I’ve learned a lot!

Thanks again for commenting! Stay safe and healthy!
      Cheers,
      Evelyn

  5. Hi Evelyn,
My name is Kate. I did the Student Blogging Challenge last year and really enjoyed it. I’m very impressed with the amount of media you put in this post!
In my posts, I too struggle with keeping the amount of words down. And sometimes I forget that people might not want to read a blog post the size of a novel. 😁
I also I think it’s really cool you decided to comment in French, it’s good you still get to practice using another language. Maybe next year you will get more opportunities. 😉

      Hi Kate!
      Thank you for commenting!
There is still time to join SBC this year! I think the deadline is April 5th!🎂
Even though it takes a long time, I really like writing long blog posts, much to the dismay of Mr. Gross, my Scimatics teacher. I am writing these Student Blogging Challenge ones for myself, after all.
Commenting in French was a challenge after this year, but I’ve been reading in French and watching French movies lately to practice. Hopefully by next year I will be fluent again!
      Thanks again for commenting!
      Cheers,
      Evelyn
