Poetry. An art form that has been around for a long long time. Since dinosaurs were around! Okay, maybe not that long. But, the fact remains, that poetry has been on this earth for a while. Poets can be found in Ancient Greek Society. You might have heard of a couple. Homer? Sappho? Telecleides? Maybe some modern(ish) day ones? Maya Angelou? Sylvia Plath? T.S Eliot? No? Yes?
Doesn’t really matter because in this post I will be covering different types of poetry and different poetic devices. Haikus, Extended metaphors, Found poem etc.
Criteria of this Unit
1. Our Poetry Unit was actually related to our Wordlview Unit. How? Well, we had to make each of our poems about a different aspect of worldview. That was…interesting.
2. Create a book of our poems. Yeah, You read that right. We had to create a book about our poems.
Throughout the Unit we had to create a list of poetry terms. And here they are:
My Favourite Poems by Me
Found poem
Our fathers brought forth liberty
Now engaged in a war
A Great War
We are here …
On the battlefield of that
Great War
For those
who gave their lives
For that
the nation will live
Explanation: the found poem is a poem you create off of a text that previously existed. I created mine off of Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. Here’s another example of a found poem (not written by me):
It’s kind of confusing one to try and read but overall interesting to think about.
My other favorite poem would have to be the imagery poem I created.
I wrote about cadets. I’m an army cadet and it’s one of my favorite things in the world. A friend of mine from school and cadets, Caleb, wrote a poem about cadets too. You can go to his blog just click here
My Favorite Poem By Not Me
Still I rise by Maya Angelou
You can watch the full version narrated by Maya Angelou here
The poetry book
The poetry book was fun because it tested my design skills as well as my “visual art” skills which I have slim to none. You can read it below:
I learn a lot about poetry and how you could use words to express yourself and your view in different ways. So that’s it for today! I hope you enjoyed the read and leave a comment if you feel the urge to.
