Blue Sky

Hello folks! Welcome back to this year’s Blue Sky Project, click here to see last years.

To create our products/ideas for Blue Sky this year we used the L.A.U.N.C.H cycle. Here you can see the model used for the L.A.U.N.C.H:

And at the night of the exhibition for our product we had to show a presentation of how we actually went about that cycle:

Here is a little behind the scenes of the L.A.U.N.C.H cycle and the creation of my product, the Multi-Table.

L:

One problem that really stood out to me was the lack of space that people in Vancouver have to deal with and the physical heath problems due to working on a laptop. So I decided to bring those two together and create a laptop stand.

A:

Now I had to figure out how we were going to:

  1. Come up with a concept
  2. Build it
  3. Present it
  4. Market it

So I asked a few questions.

U:

The U stage to me is sort of a continuation of the A stage. At this point I have asked some basic questions but am now diving into how to actually go about creating this by making specific choices and doing some detailed research.

Like for example, who would like what kind of computer stand, would it be appealing if it had multiple uses, would you like it to be adjustable, etc.

N:

It is at this point that I started to focus on the design, at first going with this concept:

And then with some guidance I realized it really didn’t work, mostly because it was challenging for me to build something as I am not well versed in the field of engineering.

C:

It is at this point that I actually started to build things. Before even doing that I had to change my concept due to issues I previously mentioned.

Here are a few photos I have from when I was constructing the first prototype:

I added a few things to the creation as I went along.

H:

I now had a complete design. Or mostly completed. I created this video here to de I started the different positions of the multi stand:

I also created a digital model of how I like it to look like in the future incorporating this like:

  • Ventilation holes
  • A soft support for the wrist
  • Adjustable legs

That was how I created my product, but then came the time to present it. We were all sorted into groups, I was in the “Me products” group. We had to decide on a theme to show off our projects and we went with As Seen on TV Products. The members of my group were: Aedan, Kyle, Kira and Brenton.

One of the activities in our exhibit was the design your own poster and photo booth, here are a few of the photos from that:

Overall, we did have some issues with the set up of our exhibition room, which admittedly was in a difficult location, but I was happy with how the night of. The exhibition went well, since I got some good feedback from visitors of the exhibition, one of them being a computer designer who even worked with ergonomics.

At the end of the day, the thing I am the most proud of is that I got to learn new skills in the field of “building stuff” something which I am neither gifted at nor do very often. I really got to put my design skills to the test.

That’s it for Blue Sky, I hope you enjoyed the post.
