It’s Music Time!

Hey guys, this week for the SBC we were focusing on music! Now anyone who knows me knows that I love to listen to music whenever I can so I was really excited to do the tasks for this week. There were eight music related prompts that we could choose to talk about and I’ve pick three of them to focus on.

The first prompt that I’d like to talk about is to make a playlist. If you read my last post on how to write a good blog post you’ll know that I always like to get into the zone for writing by listening to music, specifically classical, so I decided to share the playlist I listen to while doing my work. While you listen to my playlist you’ll probably realize that most of the songs on there have similar instruments and tempos, that’s because I find that this exact range of classical is what helps me focus the most. However this may not apply to everyone so if you find that you are getting distracted really easily by this playlist then you and I probably just have different tastes.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILDREN DURING A RECORDER LESSON IN THEIR CLASSROOM IN TEL AVIV

Next I’d like to talk to you about an amazingly annoying instrument that I bet almost everyone played in elementary, the recorder. Now if you’ve never played or even heard about a recorder than you’re luckier then you think, it’s basically the annoying cousin of flutes and clarinets. You’re probably thinking “It can’t be that bad” and you’d be wrong. At the start it’s not too bad just a little squeaky and doesn’t sound the best, but then your playing it almost everyday hearing the same squeaky notes over and over again until something inside of you breaks. Basically if you don’t want to be hated by everyone around you don’t play recorder we all hate it.

Finally I’d like to conduct a survey with you guys to see if there’s correlation between amount of work done and if you’re listening to music or not. I’v already done this survey with my class and found that listening to music does actually affect how much work you get done but I’d like to redo the experiment to see if I can get the same results as before. I’ve actually written a blog post about this survey and why we had to make it and send it out to the public so you can read it here. I’ll post my findings a couple weeks from now so stay updated.

  1. Hey Grace,

I agree with you about the recorder. I don’t understand why we were forced to learn the recorder? I completely forgot how to use one, if I had to be honest. Do you play an instrument? What’s your favorite genre of music?

    1. Hi Lily, I’m glad that my fellow students feel the same way as I do about it. I think that the recorder was used to teach us how to read music since it’s so easy to play but that doesn’t mean that it actually does what it’s supposed to do. I don’t play an instrument but I do do a lot of dance which still has something to do with music. Do you play an instrument? My favorite genre of music has to be show tunes, I love listening to musicals because they always sound amazing. What about you?

  2. I liked playing songs that we weren’t supposed to play on the recorder like the Star Wars theme song. It was fun but also just the tiniest bit boring.

    1. Hi Jakubh, that’s awesome that you had the talent to play the Star Wars theme on recorder, I could never be that talented. Do you like Star Wars or did you just decided that that was the song you wanted to learn on recorder!

  3. I liked the recorders but only because I would play songs like the Star Wars theme on it. Other than that it wasn’t too good.

  4. Thank you for sharing your thoughts about music! I do think that music can affect our concentration and study. At school (I am a middle/high school Spanish teacher), I play classical music when my students are testing or working on something that requires concentration. I call it, “Broccoli for the Brain,” and most of the time, they enjoy and appreciate it.
Some people listen to music to go to sleep, but I find that it normally keeps me awake. What works best for you—music or no music?
    Happy Blogging!

    1. Hi Barbara, I love when teachers play classical music in class because it always has an effect on the noise level so I can concentrate harder. I find that music keeps me awake if I’m trying to sleep because I’m a dancer so I’ll start to choreograph a dance to the song no matter what. However I’ve started to listen to ASMR because I find that it’s like white noise so I can’t hear anything except what’s going on in the video. I also find that it’s really calming.
