Nationalism is a case for all nations!

Hi, welcome to my blog post on a project that we just finished called a Case For a Nation.

This project was all about nationalism in history, and nationalism today. The driving question for this project was: How can an understanding of nationalism in the past, help us make sense of today? This blog post is my answer. Actually my answer that i came up with was an understanding of nationalism in the past, can help us understand today by seeing the roots of society, which has a foundation of nationalism included. Nationalism is everywhere, and most of us don’t notice it, because it has always been there, whether it’s in sports, politics, news or history. But, this blog post is my evidence to that answer, and my learning process too!

Competencies
:

During this project we worked in four competencies; Continuity and change, Evidence and resources, designing text, and empowered learner. These competencies are what we worked towards, and what we focused on improving on.

Continuity and change:

Continuity and change was the hardest competency to complete out of all of them. It was extremely hard to incorporate this competency into videos, screenplays, storyboards, and even notes! I don’t think many people were able to include this the way it was expected, but we pushed through and eventually I was able to partially include it/ add it in to the best of my ability.

Evidence and resources:

This competency was really used for two things we did in every video, which were; The know your story tab (which we used to plan out our videos), and in our YouTube descriptions, where we used MLA formatting to clarify our sources. I think I did pretty well with this competency, and I actually learned how to format MLA. I learned a lot of things about plagiarism and works cited and all of that, and overall I think I definitely improved on this competency.

Designing text:

This competency was a base for all of the writing stuff that we did throughout this project. Every time that we had to write stuff down, whether it was notes, a script or even captions on a video, that was all designing text. This competency was used frequently and therefore I think that I would have had to improve in it at some point, and I think I definitely did.

Empowered learner:

Now, this competency is interesting. This one is all about using technology. The technology we used was honestly just the iPad, which is what we’re meant to do. I think this is probably the competency I improved most on, because I think that my editing skills have improved significantly. Even just organizing all of my work and figuring out what I was going to do was using empowered learner.

Now, all of these competencies were used throughout the entire project, so now I’m going to describe my learning, and give you evidence of these competencies, week by week.

Week 1:

Week one was when we came right back to school right after the break. In week one we jumped straight back into the work and launched this project. There were 3 milestones due just in that first week. That’s crazy! 2 of them were videos!

The first video we did was a parent interview, asking our parents questions about nationalism and what they thought about it.

The second video of that week was an animatic. An animatic is sort of a moving storyboard in a way, and we had to create on of those about a case study on nationalism in a certain country in the 1800s, I chose Germany.

Week 2:

In week two we really focused on deepening our knowledge on British North America, which is the old name for Canada. The major milestone for that week was a tutorial video, on how BNA turned into Canada and achieved confederation. I used a metaphor for this tutorial, and I baked  brownies that ended up representing the Canadian confederation.

Week 3:

This week was probably my favourite week out of them all. This week was the busiest out of all of them, and we focused on oppression in Canada, especially towards the Métis people and indigenous peoples. We learnt about a man named Louis Riel, who founded Manitoba, and I think that the biggest help to my learning that week was a debate we had on Louis Riel. There has been a long standing debate on him, whether he was a hero or a villain. I was on the arguing team that he was a hero, we won. Arguing about Louis Riel, actually brought some insight on all of the oppression in the 1800s, and I think that because Louis Riel was Métis and was actively being oppressed, there is a possibility he wasn’t a hero, but there’s absolutely no way he was a villain. In this week we actually had the video we were working on stopped, and taken in as a rough draft, which was sad but relieved a lot of stress from most people including myself.

Week 4:

Good god this week was hard. This was the final week of this quarter, when we had to finish everything up and get it all done. There were 2 video milestones due this week, one team one, one individual.

The first one was a cumulative video, that I opted to do with a parter, Erin . We did this video on nationalism and what it meant.

That video however, was only to lead up to what came next, the final video. This video was a reaction video, from our parents, who we interviewed in the first video. They reacted to this video on nationalism that we made, it was kind of a full circle thing in the end.

After every week we wrote reflections. I think that it’s important to share them because they are really where all of the reflecting happens, and it’s important to see the full reflection process.

Weekly reflections

In the end this massive project was pretty epic. This project was actually the  biggest project I’ll probably ever do, 10 milestones is a lot, and that’s how many we ended up having. In the end I think that I learnt more in this project than ever before.

Thanks for reading this blog post about nationalism! If you want to learn more about some of the topics I talked about, check out some of the videos! Here is the link to my YouTube channel: Indira S

Hello there! I really liked reading your blog post! Your videos were amazing, in particular, I enjoyed your take on “how to bake the Canadian Confederation”. I believe that it was very creative. Also, I can’t imagine completing that much work for a project, you must have been exhausted! I’ll be sure to look out for your posts in the future!
