The Coldest War

“Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind.” – U.S President John F Kennedy

The Cold War lasted from 1947-1991, meaning it’s a very significant era in history, that we have recently taken on the task of investigating. Over the course of several weeks we have dove in to the details and the stories from the Cold War, while working to make our final product; a Cold War comic.

We started out by reading a “mentor text”, called the Coldest City, which was based in the height of the Cold War, in Germany. The Coldest City is a comic book, which made it the perfect text to look at because of the content and the style. When we read this comic, we read it more as a guide/ a way to get ideas for style and how we should construct our own comics. The book was dark and engaging, and as a class we identified all of the elements of it, while also discussing the style and how we could use its flaws to better our comics. When I say “flaws”, I really just mean how we as individuals thought a different style would help with our own ideas.

We researched into comic lingo, and read several Marvel and D.C examples to help us understand how a comic is constructed, and what all the different text boxes and page layouts meant. The notes I took: Comic Language Notes

I decided to base my comic off of the assassination of John F Kennedy, as I was already interested in the topic.

An important thing to mention about this project is that it started before I was in the class. I joined into this project a couple of weeks late, which is one of the reasons I chose JFK’s assassination, because I had some prior knowledge on the case.

With that said, I still did research to make sure my comic was historically accurate and good quality, especially because with this event there is a lot of discourse about what really happened.

I’m not much of an artist, so making this comic was a big challenge for me, but I’m really proud of how it came out. I learned some interesting tracing techniques, and a lot more about the Cold War! Making this comic was an experience, and it was some of the most fun I’ve ever had on a final product!

This project really sparked an interest in me in comics, and I think I’ll keep reading them now that I know how much work goes into every panel. This was a fantastic project to jump back into, and I’m glad that I could not only learn about the Cold War, but also find a new interest!

Thanks for reading my blog post! Be sure to comment and share your thoughts! 😊
