Mediums is the Message-Reflection

Bonjour,

This is my reflection on my latest project called Medium is the Message so please enjoy.

Drafts:

  • Draft: 1

Reflection:

While working on the Medium is the Message Project I got to create advertisements for a local business in Deep Cove, my groups was the brand A’hoy which specializes is clothes, shoes, backpacks, and accessories. Through out this project I got to enhance my graphic design skills as well as my collaborative skills.

While starting this we had to choose a local business, my group chose the business A’hoy. After a quick phone call they thankfully agreed to work with us, We then had to write an e-mail consisting of a few interview questions. A couple days later me and my group got together to join in a Zoom call with our business, on this call we asked our interview questions the the manger of the store (Marie) had prepped for, based of here answers we then went off and created different advertisement drafts.

For my first draft I didn’t really try, the colour scheme was off as well as they’re being no information on the business except for the name and a photo which only showed a bit of there product. I had a feeling I didn’t really grasp the concept of the business or the assignment once I view my fellow peers advertisements. I also knew that I had rushed this draft to get it done and didn’t really take time to choose a photo that really represented the business.

For my second I felt like it improved by a lot, I had chosen the right colour scheme and good photos. I added the company’s phone number and address  and made that pop out by adding headers like “talk to us” or “come visit” that were placed in big and bold and would hopefully make the reader pay attention. For the images I chose two, the first image was of there store to show what the store looks like as well as to show where everything happens, I edited this a bit to make the colours pop more. For the second image I decided to go with a photo of deep cove to embody the outdoors as well as the local aspect of the Deep Cove. Then in the corner I advertised a bit of there new fall stock, With this idea of new fall clothing I also focused on the fact that it would be weather safe as well as stylish.

For my third draft I didn’t really make any drastic changes. I changed a bit of the colour scheme by just marketing the blue box a little greener as well as changing the text colour to match. Once that was done I decided to change the photos, for the bottom one I changed it to a person kayaking to embody more of the adventure aspect of Deep Cove and the fall clothing form they store itself. For the second image I decided to put in a different photo of there store this time with less stuff and with a dog as well, I hoped that people would see the dog and want to stop in to see it then they could start checking out clothing  or shoes and then hopefully purchase something or come back. I also changed the layout for this advertisement by moving the box with the company logo to the top of the document therefor freeing up space for the photos and text.

Then me and my group came together to share and create a set of drafts that we would later send off to our business. The first draft followed my layout for draft one and two while the other one took a more simplistic design that has a yellow rain coat.

For my fourth draft I chose a more simple approach different to my last two, I chose a deeper blue almost like the ocean and didn’t really have a lot of photos.  I also chose the slogan “Ready in rain or shine” which I took from my team’s previous group drafts. I then added little dashes off of the words “rain” and “shine” to give off an effect of rays of sun and rain droplets, I also then changed the colour of these dashes making them yellow and blue to exaggerate the idea of sun and rain.

While all this was happening me and my team were also working on a document called a “launch journal”. In this document we would brainstorm ideas for e-mails, drafts, and more. This is where most of our planning and learning took place in this document.

During this we were introduced to a new app called Canva to work with to help us develop and create our advertisements. It had a varying degree of fonts, layouts, and stickers to use it help you create posters, Instagram posts, and more. I really liked using this app and I found it really easy and helpful to use during the creations of my advertisements.

In conclusion I feel like this project really let me explore new apps and let me use my creative side more. I really liked the experience and idea of actually working with a business because it gives you a real taste of life unlike working with a made up or flake business because your stalking to real people, this makes it a bit more nerve racking because there’s more on the line.

Thank you,

Ines 🙂
