MHTN Trailer

During our recent humanities unit, we kept in mind our driving question, how do authors use text to teach us more about ourselves? It was a broad question at first, but each and every assignment brought us closer and closer to our answer. In order to start our search for this answer, we had to use literature and filmmaking.

First thing, we were assigned a book group along with a book study. My book was More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera and my group consisted of Adlih, Melika, Kailey, Logan, and Luca. The first task we had to tackle was setting our due dates, we sat together as discussed when certain parts of our book should be read and at that time we would have a book meeting as well.

As I read More Happy, ideas for our trailer were overflowing my brain. The scenarios that were explained in this book gave so many opportunities for scenes in our book trailer, such as location, characters, and dialogue. In order to keep track of all of the ideas, I made sure to highlight each of the passages. Each type of passage was color coded.

Once it came to filming we were confident with the shots we had in mind. We had storyboarded the basics of the shots we wanted along with the locations we planned to film each shot at.

We filmed all day downtown, location to location. We had the opportunity to film in Melika’s mother’s clinic and a comic book store. I’m extremely pleased with how our shots turned out.

After our filming was complete I was content with the shots we had collected. Once Adlih put the video together, that’s really when Adam Silvera’s story came to life.

As I reflect on this project, I am very proud of the work my group and I have done and I hope they are as well. We were all very organized and didn’t fall behind schedule. One of my goals I had made for myself last year, was to put more effort into my locations for filming and I achieved that during this project.

Once our videos were finished we had the opportunity to place QR codes on our book, this QR code linked straight to our video on YouTube.

During this project, I learned how much work is put into movie making, even in a small trailer such as ours. Transforming a book into a moving image, is something unique, something I’d never done before and I hope we have the chance to do something like it again in the future.

  1. Hello isy, this post was great! You talked in depth about your ideas and our filming schedule. Make sure to add a photo of our group with the book. I think you should also show our first draft of the video. Also, how did you get the idea to colour code the passages? That was really cool.

  2. Hi I’m Gwen, I’m also in PLP but I’m in grade 8. That trailer was really cool. I liked how you did the basketball shoot from different angles. Watching it makes want to read the book to figure out the secret he had about his friend or why he was at the doctors. It was intriguing and i think it could really work as a real trailer!
