What is a synthesis essay?

Our task at hand was to finally answer our driving question, how do authors use text to teach us more about our selves, completely in our own words. We completed this task with our in-class synthesis essay write. Using my knowledge from More Happy Than Not and Persepolis, and Wab Kinew, we answered our prolong driving question. 

 

What is the most difficult step when preparing for an in-class essay?

From my experience after writing my essay, I learnt that one of the hardest parts in the preparation stage is knowing how to study or formulate the shape of your essay. Before I wrote my essay, I had my research down, along with my outline but I wasn’t sure how I could prepare. After I experienced the in-class writing session, I know now that one of the most important deliverables is your quotes sheet. I didn’t realize it at first but, when your teacher offers you any sort of sheet for notes or important info, use it to its full extent, fit as many quotes as you can on to your quote sheet or as many notes on your notes sheet. Those quotes can help to shape your essay and keep your thought process on track. 

What is the importance of practicing the writing process and writing essays at school is? Do you think this will help with other aspects of your life?

It is important to practice in class writing in high school because it is a type of assignment that will reappear quite often in grade 11 and 12 along with academic  post-secondary schooling. Especially for us as a class, it is a new challenge, because PLP is based off of projects instead of in-class written assignments. Writing these essays in school can possibly help us in our future professions or as I said before, in post-secondary.

What is my biggest strength in writing?

I don’t think of myself as a very advanced writer but one component that isn’t a difficult task for me is getting my thoughts out on a page. If its facts, my own knowledge or data, I don’t have trouble getting it all on a page and organizing it all into a storyline.

Synthesis Essay

After the long haul of reading, note taking and writing, moving forward I’d like to focus on preparation. I need to practice organizing my thoughts in order to have a smoother writing in session next time we do an in-class essay write, I want to feel much more confident before I write, to feel as though I have all the information I need. In order to do that, I’ll need to become better and reflection on all the learning during the unit, focusing on the important parts, so I can haves stronger outline for when I write.
