Have you ever wanted to see what it is like working for one of the biggest companies in the world? I know I was a little intimidated when I was told I would be visiting Amazon for Take Your Kid to Work Day.

If you didn’t know, every year grade 9 students all across Canada spend a day at their parents work to see what it’s like and to understand more about employment. Who knows it might even inspire them into thinking about what they want to do when they’re older.

In PLP we were told to make a video about the day there or about the work. I decided to make my video about the people behind amazon. I interviewed 6 people about they’re lives and why they wanted to work at amazon.

Amazon are famous for being secretive and before going there I had to sign a non-disclosure agreement so I can’t go into too much detail about everything I learned. However I loved it there; the buildings were so nice and modern and you could really feel the good atmosphere. Personally I don’t think I would want to work there since I’m not into all the tech stuff. I’d prefer a much more outspoken job like something in government.

I began the day by heading to the Telus Gardens building in downtown where I got a tour and got to learn all about amazon. This was led by some planners in amazon. Then after lunch our responsibility was all up to our parents. So I headed to a different building to go see what my Dad does. He works as a software development manager in a large team responsible for the software that is used to advertise jobs and manage the entire recruitment process at amazon.

I got to go in his little private office and he also introduced me to lots of different people on his team. That was when I began interviewing for my video. By talking to people I learned about different roles such as UX design and product management. I noticed the one thing in common about all roles was that everyone commented on the size and scale of the projects at amazon. I then ended the day by catching up with one of my Dad´s coworkers Piyush who I knew from a couple of years ago when I was lucky enough to get to tag along with him and my Dad on a business trip to Paris!

Overall I really enjoyed my day there and I’d love to go there again. This really got me excited about my future and what is has in store for me.
