One thing that we missed, that is a pretty important part of the grade 9 curriculum is workplace safety. To make up for not covering the topic in grade nine we are spending a bit of our time in Maker looking at how to stay safe at work. This is more important now than ever as a lot of us already have or are getting jobs this year.

We started with a video showing the many ways that you can get injured in unsafe working conditions. From here we went on to do a quick test in what we should and shouldn’t do while working.

During the same class we had around 20 minuets to make and present a keynote on a certain hazard that can be found in the workplace. Sound hazards were chosen for my group and we spent the 20 minutes looking at the risks and protective measures you can take when exposed to dangerous sounds in the workplace. Sound is the most common risk and affects a quarter of workers in BC. The damage caused by loud noise can stack up overtime without your knowledge of it happening and it doesn’t take much to be able to harm you. Hearing protection should be given by your employer until the workplace meets the noise safety requirements.

We were given more study videos which include more detail about workplace safety to prepare us for a test this Thursday.

This is something I hadn’t really thought about before, and I think it’s really important now considering it’ll only be a few months before I’m working around hot coffee at Starbucks. Assuming I get the job…
