Portraits Learning Post

For The Month of November in my PLP Maker Course we focused on photography, we had a few assignments and a final project. These are the assignments,

Our First Assignments was to Make some self portraits ( NOT selfies )

I used the Lighting and angling to make it look like I had massive hair in this photo. I also used a Grain effect to help the mood

In this photo I decided to use the “Light Tunnel” Effect to emphasize  the colors on my face.

Finally I used the “Kalidescope” effect to emphasize everything but my eyes in contrast to the last photo.

The Next Assignment was to make a portrait of someone else, I choose my dog George!

The Third Assignment was to create a shilloute Portrait.

In Contrast to the first photo I made the top of my head bright and the bottom dark, I used a lighting effect to make the bottom darker and it worked!

Our Final Project, was to recreate a historical photo or painting, I used my other dog Henry to recreate “Giclee” By Keith Haring.

Undertale ( SBC Week 7 )

-NOTICE-  The Use of Copywriten Images is Good as all the images are used from their respective press kits. -NOTICE-

UnderTale is a RPG by Fan-Modder, Composer and Game Developer Toby Fox.In the game the storyline is that you are a child that has fallen into a underground monster society and you must progress through the underground

by either befriending, fleeing or K̶̡̘̝̰̠̣̘̩̥̣̐͋̌͋̾̿͘i̶̧͚̮̲͉̞̒̐̚͝l̸̬̩̜̠̭̾̃̒̄͠l̵̦̋̇i̴̢̻̟̗͙̰͑̂̂̉̋̔̏͒͊͝n̴̨̬̙̱̣͍̰̔͛̿̌̒́̈̂͘͝ĝ̴̨̮̼̭̗̝͇̹̏̂͂͒̓̕͝͠͠ the monsters you encounter with the goal of leaving the underground. The  OST ( Original SoundTrack ) is one of the best game soundtracks of all time, next to the Minecraft soundtrack by C418, the Cuphead Soundtrack and the LOZ:BOTW ( Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild) SoundTrack. Some of the best songs are: Home, BoneTrousle, Dating Start!, Dummy!, Shop, Sans and Megalovania. The Sprite Work was pretty great especially with the battle sprites as their the main focus.

The Combat System is a fun, creative and flows well, like Paper Mario and the super stylish Persona 5.

The Characters are great with distinct personalities, great designs and quirky and clever dialogue particularly with the act options in battle.

The stabbed in the back/ 4th wall break moment is great….. If you had a PC and played Undertale in 2015, if you didn’t then, let’s just your Save file isn’t going to work.

Overall: UnderTale is a fun RPG that sticks out, but isn’t the GOTY that everyone said it was.

Binary: The Language of Computers ( SBC 2018 Week 6)

For this week I decided to learn about Computer Science and Binary. In the earliest days of the internet there was Punch Cards, small rectangular cards with punches with holes in center areas. The idea was that each square could have a hole or not have a hole, this is called binary.Nowadays the internet doesn’t  have holes and papers, their is 1’s and 0’s, each number is either a 1 or 0. Each digit of binary is a combination of 1’s and 0’s, for instance: 1 = 001, 2 = 010 and 3 is 011. In Computing 8 digits are called a byte and are represented by a letter or number.

The more digits there is the more information we can communicate.

A very funny comic strip from the comic “ The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl” actually explains this concept greatly, click here.

I found a lot of this information from a video from the YouTube channel “Culture Crash” , you can watch there video here

I thought the video was very well done, but some of the jokes were stretched too long. But it was very informative and used animation as a great way to illustrated its points.

The Animation Problem (SBC 2018 Week 5)

In the Mainstream film industry, animation is one of the most disappointing industry with forgettable and very “meh” films. Can you remember the plot or characters of “Ferdinand”, “Smurfs: The lost Village”, “The LEGO Ninjago Movie” or even the ending of “The Incredibles 2”. The majority of the animation industry is only focused making and marketing movies to small children and uses big name actors to hook in the Parents.

Illumination Animation is one of the worst contenders of this, with movies like “Sing!” which holds no substance or message, had stale or little too no style and was very pandering to all audiences.

When you see this picture what theme or mood can you see?
Is there a character that you can relate too? That was Illumination’s main goal.

There are many different and creative animated movies but are quickly forgotten because the big and flashy films are very obnoxiously advertised.

Look at how in-your-face this poster, and look at how the actors name is so massive!

Japanese Animation ( or anime ) is some of the best animated movies of all time with films like: Spirited Away, Your Name, A Silent Voice and Cowboy Bebop.

Animation is a medium where you can show literally anything to anyone and it’s only being used for   children. There are and will always be amazing mainstream Animated Movies from studios like Pixar and Laika Studios but there is a growing population of “meh” movies from Sony Pictures,Blue Sky and Dreamworks.

The Oregon Ad Files.

In October of 2018 my class in the Preformance Learning Program ( PLP) took a trip to the Oregon coast. The Main Focus was to learn about Marine and Tectonic Sciences but we also went to focus on Advertising Unit , we were assigned a business in Oregon and my group was assigned Clark’s Restaurant. Clark’s Restaurant is a old american restaurant. The trip started at 6:45 with my group of Kaia (http://www.blog44.ca/kaiar/), Thomas (http://www.blog44.ca/thomasj/), Ben ( http://www.blog44.ca/bend/) and Meg (http://www.blog44.ca/megumib/). We went to Cabella’s as a first stop and it was pretty fun! There was hunting gear, animal models and even a aquarium.

We went to Clarks at lunch at 12:45, I ordered a very delicious chicken and bacon burger. Clark’s was actually one of the best burger places in Washington ( next to Tat’s Delicassen in Seattle). After lunch we had our advertising interview, these are the questions.

Hello we are _________ pleased to meet you, we are doing a field study project on advertising. Would it be possible to talk to your manager about some advertising questions?

0. What do you do?
0. Who are your customers?
0. What is your history like?
0. What kind of ads do you do.
0. What is your advertising style/theme?
0. Do you have or had any promotions?
0. Do you make any new dishes?
0. Is there anything you would not like to showcase?
0. Do you have a logo?
0. What mood do you want to give?

And these are some of the notes for the interview

Notes
– moved next door
– Manager is landlord
– Depends on season
– Summer- regulars, locals
– Website
– Facebook
– Word by mouth
– Radio station
– Fliers
– Specials on weekends
– Major holidays have special stuff
– The milkshakes
– A family business
– All ages
– Burgers and milkshakes are specials – Burger harbour 16 years champion
– Friendly staff
– Cheerful
– Pathos

After these notes and the interview, I created the first ad draft.

This is the feedback I received from my teacher was : it was too complex. Let me explain, the idea of using a blur effect was to out of the box for Clark’s target audience.

This was my second draft, I personally think the color schemes and fonts really aren’t really good on the background.

The third draft had better fonts but the color scheme wasn’t very good  and some of the positions and colours don’t really work.

I did a full reboot of the ad with a fresh design, although the font size wasn’t the best I thought it was a pretty great ad!

This project  taught me about what advertisers do and was really interesting!

Jude as a dog!

Next we stopped at the restaurant Clark’s where we learned that me and my group are doing a ad on Clark’s themselves. I had a Chicken  Burger with bacon which was 👏 10/10👏 . We did a interview with Clark’s and then after that we went to a beach. The next day, We went to High Life Adventures  Zipling Course.

 https://highlife-adventures.com/

The Course had eight lines and we had two instructors. The First Line Was easy just a straightforward 300 Metres, it was easy and fun, the second one was also 300 Metres but it was steeper. Since the Zipling course is over a lake, one of the lines was very low to the river so if you wanted to you could dunk yourself into the river you could. A large  portion of the class decided to dunk themselves but even some people put half their body into the water. After you go out of the zip-line run a yeti came to spook you! The last line was super fast and high. After the Zipling, we went to Nina’s Thai Kitchen and it was very delicious with peanut sauce, spring rolls, sticky rice and duck.

We also went to the Hatfield Marine Science Center to do a ROV challenge. My group spent a lot of the Time building protection for our motors, we used different tubes to build the structures and we took turns piloting. Our challenge was to use our ROV ( Remote Operated Vehicle ) to carry small metal objects. My classmate Ben was the best and got six metal objects in one minute.

At the ending leg of the trip, we stopped at the most Incredible Pizza Place , Johns Incredible Pizza Place. At Johns Incredible pizza their was a Arcade, Buffet and “Amusement Attractions” (Rides!!). There was a room with six TV’s all playing Disney XD, the Buffet had ice cream, fudge cake and “Incredifetti”. The Arcade Featured:  The Jurassic Park Game, DDR ( Dance Dance Revolution ), A  bumper kart track and Alien: The Game.

Overall : The trip was really fun and had a lot of learning but, also had some great learning experience
