The Medium is the Message – Mid-Project

Mid-project-reflection

At the start of this project we were put in groups and we told to choose a business in Deep Cove. We were told that the goal for the project was to make an advertisement for that business. After a lot of preparation we set set up a Zoom call with the business we chose (A’hoy). On the Zoom call we asked about their target audience, colour scheme, and what product to promote. We then learned about design principles, techniques and appeals, layout, photography and telling a story. We were asked to create our own individual advertisement draft for the business. In this post I will be talking about my individual drafts.

  • Draft 1

Draft 1

For my first draft I wanted to focus on the fall aspects of Deep Cove (mostly the rain). The colour scheme we were told to use was navy blue, white and muted fall colours.  I used a black rain jacket to contrast the white. I liked my slogan ‘beat the weather’ because it tells a story. If you don’t go outside and ‘beat the weather’ in the rain you will be mostly inside from October through April. Th feedback I got was “I like the layout, but it looks Halloweeny” I was confused on what I was supposed to do with that so I asked how. They thought it the orange leaves and black rain jacket looked Halloweeny. They also said that the letters were kind of ghostly. With this information I created my second draft.

Draft 2

I changed the layout because I wanted to try something new. I changed the lettering to be more blocky and I made the leaves a more red toned colour. I also added a blue overtone to the background. The feedback I got was “it looks depressing” and “I still find it Halloweeny”. I asked why they found it Halloweeny and they said the jacket looked like a floating spirit. Then I formed my third draft.

Draft 3

This one has the biggest change because I added a model wearing the jacket instead of just the jacket. I made the layout similar to the first draft and I did the fall colours more red and brown tones. I ended up making the background lighter to make it less depressing. Out of all my drafts, this one is my favourite.

Some things I learned while doing the drafts are you will never get anything perfect on the first time, you can always improve and feedback is key to move forward.

✌️ bye

Great job Julia! I love to see the progression. You seemed to take the feedback and come up with the best version. Just what is supposed to happen! 🙂
