MPOL 2020

“Thank you for coming to my presentation of learning. I am the expert on my own learning. I am also responsible and accountable for my own learning. You can expect me to give an honest evaluation of my progress. We will discuss my strengths and weaknesses. Thank you in advance for listening and for offering feedback that I can use to improve as a learner.”

Every year PLP has a student teacher meeting which is all about the student reflecting on what they’ve learned so far. They call these MPOLs and here’s mine.

Humanities for me has been probably my favourite class of all. At the very start of the year we went to Alberta (blog post here) where we learned all about how their place they live in affects them and the CPR. This experience for me was really educational, unfortunately I got quite sick while I was there but I still had a lot of fun otherwise.

After some videos we made for Alberta we moved onto the next unit which was more filmmaking! This unit was about revolutions where we learned about The French Revolution, The American Revolution, The Russian Revolution, and touched up on The Industrial Revolution. For each of the revolutions besides industrial, we made a video to educate others about these revolutions. After we had done this we had a chance to chose whatever revolution and make a final film on this. My group decided to do it on the Meiji Revolution since this was what had formed our group. I think this is my favourite project we had done in Humanities so far. The reason I enjoyed it so much is because there was so much to do in such a short time frame, due to this I felt much more involved in this project and I learned a lot too. It also pushed me outside of my comfort zone as I had to do things that weren’t catering towards my strengths. There’s also a blog post about this project, to see it click here.

Before we went on Winter Break we had done yet another project. This one was also very fun as it was all about Star Wars. In this project we analyzed some Star Wars stories and identified some key things that need to go into a story. Once we had read and analyzed about 12 stories we moved onto making our own stories that fit into the Star Wars trilogy. After the many revisions that stories require we finished them and made them ready for the Winter Exhibition. I did a more in depth review on this project which you can see here.

Maker this year as tied into our Humanities work quite a bit. The first big project we did in Maker was more film making, this project was called Running A Remake. The skills we learned in making this helped us a lot when making the rest of our Humanities videos. This project was all about learning what goes into making a film, we learned about things like storyboards and screenplays. Once we did some work on this we had the task to make a carbon copy of a short film. I went into more detail about this project in another post which you can see here.

We had also done other films using these skills. A good example of this is the Live Event Video. In this video we had to make a film on our own with the topic of any live event we wanted to go to. I chose to do mine on mountain biking and you can see the video I made from it and what my process was to make it, if you click here.

Another assignment we did that ties into our Humanities work was the Story Strikes Back project. In Maker we focused on the LAUNCH process which I also included in the post I wrote about this project which you can find here.

Most recently we started Destination Imagination again which we haven’t been able to do too much so far but we’ve done a lot of the brainstorming assignments and read over the rules.

In Scimatics so far we’ve done about 4 big projects so far switching between science and math for each of them. The first project we did was about Exponents, and we showed this through making a simple card game. The game I made was a spin off of a game called ‘Cards Against Humanities’. We made it more school appropriate by making it about memes and the way we used exponents in this was when we were calculating the scores. I made another post about this one too, which you can see here.

After the exponents game the next project we did was about the differentiating Correlation Vs Causation. In this project we looked at how to properly analyze surveys correctly and what the difference is between correlation Vs causation. At the end of this we did our own surveys and a presentation on what our results were.

After this we moved onto Chemistry. Our final presentation for this was shown at the Winter Exhibition. I also did a blog post on this project so if you want to read more click here.

We’re back to math again and this time were focusing on Like Terms. This is a project that were not done yet but. So far we’ve  learned about like terms and how to use them in our daily lives. Blog post coming soon.

We haven’t done too much in PGP so far but here’s what we have done. We started PGP by doing a few small assignments like a goal ladder to establish a few good habits of mind and goal achieving strategies. We’ve done one big project and this was the Take Your Kid To Work Day Video. This was a video I did about my experience and what I did when I got the opportunity to stay at my moms work for a day. I did a blog post on this experience and a video which you can see in the post.

That’s been my grade nine year so far and I hope you’ve enjoyed. Bye 👋
