Recreation!

Lately in maker we have been focussing most of our time on camera angles, storyboarding, scripting, and most importantly, recreation. After we were introduced to the topic we would be focussing on, we were given our first assignment. For this assignment, everyone in the class was split into groups of three and all given the same video to recreate, now you may be asking “well, Lucas? What video where you tasked with recreating?”. The video we needed to recreate was call “Catch”. It is a 3-minute comedy short about two guys playing catch, but things start to get a little weird. The link to the video is below.

I was put in a group with Kailey and Adlih The first thing we started to plan was who would play each role. Since there was only one guy in our group (Me). We needed to hire another guy to play the second character in the film. We ended up persuading Kai to play the second character in the film. The next step was to find the location we would be filming at. We decided on the park near my house since it had a geographical resemblance to the original film. The next step was to write the script; this was easy to do since we could just copy all the dialogue and screenplay aspects of the film into a Pages document. Now that we had everything figured out all that was left to do was film! Filming went smoothly and we finished in one day which gave us a lot of time to edit and do all our fancy post-production thingy’s.

Once we had handed in all our videos and presented them to our classmates, we were assigned our next project….

Much like the previous project, our groups were tasked with finding a short film on YouTube (approx. 1-3 minute) and then recreating the film shot by shot, frame by frame, so that it would look almost completely identical to the original film. But there was a twist. We would stay in the same groups we were in for the previous project and Instead of the whole class recreating one film, each group could choose which film they would recreate. Our group chose this short film titled “The Five Stages of Netflix” In where a 20-year-old man is so addicted to Netflix that he ends up talking to his TV.

Since this short film is all set in one house in one spot. This film would be relatively easy to recreate, there is also only 1 character in the film which makes this immensely easier. We took the same steps to plan as we took for the previous project. The location we chose was Adlih’s house because it resembled the set more than anyone else’s house, and as you probably already guessed, the script was very easy to write since we already had everything in front of us. Now that we had finished our planning stage it was time for us to film again. The filming went unbelievably smoothly and we finished it in only one night!

After we uploaded the video I decided to make a directors commentary explaining some of the behind the scenes aspects of the film

I enjoyed this series of projects. Mostly because when recreating a film, you can skip so many steps because most of the behind the scenes stuff is already taken care of for you. I hope that we can continue on with these recreation projects because as most people in my class know, I love making videos!
