Podcasts, War, and Legacies.

In humanities we just finished our first ever podcast project. The objective of our project was to explain Canada’s legacy in WW2 using interview with real life veterans from around the lower mainland. We were first introduced to the concept of podcasts in general. We wrote down different styles/genres of podcasts, and everyday we would go around the class and everyone would say the podcast they listened to the day before.

We were then split up into groups of three. These groups would be used for interviewing a certain veteran. Before we got into the podcast stuff we needed to get into the WW2 vibe.

Throughout this unit we were constantly reading from the unbelievably complex and interesting learning guide that our teacher Ms. Maxwell put together

We also watched multiple documentaries and read countless articles to build some knowledge on the topic of world war 2. We even created a timeline of all of the important stuff that happened in the Second World War.

Now, back to the podcast. I ended up landing myself in a group with Marshall and Kai. We were assigned an interview with a 90 year old naval veteran in an elderly home in surrey, we found out his name is Bill Cameron. We ended up calling him and arranging a time to do the interview. We also made a list of good questions to ask him.

The interview went really smoothly and our audio recording of it turned out to be just under 50 minutes long! We ended up getting some really good material from it and we new it would help our individual podcasts and tremendous amount.

For my podcast I decided to focus on Bill’s experience during D-Day and the effect that the war had on his family and in particular, his girlfriend. After the interview we started work on our individual podcasts. Using material and knowledge I gathered in class I was able to produce what I think was a really high quality podcast.

After many, many revisions including recording new voice clips, title changes, cover images, and much more I had finally finished my first podcast, and I feel pretty proud of it too!

Once everyone had uploaded their podcasts, Ms. Maxwell created one master SoundCloud account that she would use to create a playlist with all of our podcasts in it.

A few day after we finished everything with our podcast we started a new mini podcast assignment, we were tasked with creating a discussion based podcast upon a few major turning points in WW2, you can listen to it below. I genuinely enjoyed doing this project. Ive always listened to podcasts and it was really interesting to have the opportunity to create our own wile also learning about our countries history. Maybe I might start my own podcast! Hit the comments below and let me know if I should start my own podcast!
