Destination Imagination Regionals and Provincials

REGIONALS

We recently entered a competition called Destination Imagination. In this competition, we worked in groups to complete a challenge. There are six categories one can compete in, including engineering, improvisation, and fine arts. My group chose improvisation. To complete our challenge we had to perform three improv skits with the same storyline using a different character and genre each time, while using a box of props to help aid our performance.

We started out by planning when and how we would practice for our performance, and then researched the characters and genres we would be given. Every other day in class we practiced, and we spent a few days on the weekends working even more. After working hard for so long, the competition grew closer and closer.

Another key part of Destination Imagination is something called the Instant Challenge. The instant challenge is a challenge we are given in a private room at the competition, on the spot, to complete as a group. We practiced in class some examples of the Instant Challenge and became more skilled at them as we progressed.

When we got to the Destination Imagination Regional Competition, we had to wait a few hours before our challenges. We filled the time by watching other groups present. Once it got to be our turn, we went into the presentation room and tried our best. We worked well as a group, but we didn’t place as high as we would have hoped to. Out of eleven teams in our division, we got sixth. Hopefully next time we can do better.

Here is a brief video showing us completing our challenge.

PROVINCIALS

Since the last competition, we have been learning more about improv and how to complete our task. I am quite pleased with how we have improved. After our first competition, we learned a few things that would help us to work better as a team and to. Over the past few weeks, we have researched numerous genres and characters, practiced a multitude of prompts, and started working together exceptionally well. Using critique we were given on our last performance, we changed some ideas to further grow our challenge. Our performance prompt was to create three scenes where our stock character was learning to skate, and we had to realize that we could not fit more than three elephants in a cafeteria. We worked really well together and ended up coming in 4th place, which was a definite improvement. My group consisted of Jessie, Lauren, Melika, and I. Destination Imagination was a great experience, and I can’t wait to do it again.
