Be like Steven Spielberg šŸŽ„

This mini project lasted a little over 2 weeks which is pretty short considering our other projects.

This project was about the history of movies and how they were filmed up to this day. Turns out that computer-made explosions and sketchy CGI didnā€™t just magically appear.

This project began with just a general ā€œBuild your Knowledgeā€ session where we made a chart with 4 categories: Definition – Characteristics/traits – Examples – Non-examples. We were all given a topic that related to film and then filled out those charts and categories.

So it was really just a mellow start, just to refresh our film knowledge.

The next couple days we started learning and tasking notes about the history of movie-making and the different styles of movies being produced over time like the Cinemeta Graphe, the first Narrative film, first ā€œTalky movie, and the first Animated movie.

Along with that we started making videos using one video making techniques. The first mini movie we made was a ā€œStory about youā€ which was a short film using the Clips app to build a story about your hobbies. We also needed to top it off with background music to create a mood for the setting as our daily video making skill.

The second movie we made was my favourite. The type movie we made this time was a ā€œSilent movieā€ which is one of the first types of movies to be released. The style of this movie is old-timey looking with the old-timey filter with saloon music in the background. Since microphones and the film industry hadnā€™t collided yet, there were no voices just the music making it a Silent Movie. If dialogue needed to be shown, a black screen with phrases to amplify the story.

Here is the video I made, Iā€™m pretty sure you cam figure it what its about (btw Iā€™m Mexican so donā€™t consider me a racist)

Silent Movie

The third movie I made with Gwen, Sylas, andĀ Claire was ā€œTutorial Videoā€ with various angles and a voice over to show you step-by-step how to do something of our choice. My group chose to make a tutorial video on how to eat chips. Although I wasnā€™t actually there to film the video, I did help plan and make the treatment (a treatments is a planning document that summarizes the story and what roles everyone has)

Tutorial Video

Finally the fourth video I made with Zach, Gwen, and Dylan was for us to learn and familiarize ourselves with using special effects that iMovie provides. We also used external apps like Action Movie to add special effects like car crashes, missile launches, and falling wrecking balls. We then made a 1 scene story that included music, special effects, and sound effects.

Special Effects

That pretty much sums up this short project, I thought it was fun and interesting to learn the different things you can use to make movies, and the history of the film industry.
