Video skills reflection

Today is going to be a big reflection so get ready. This post is going to be all about the ten different videos that I have done science the beginning of the year, I will also be talking about the different core competencies that I have achieved while thinking about, creating, and looking back on these different videos. Now that you have been warned here we go.

The first two I will reflect on are my four shot video and my first French Revolution video, these were both some of my first videos of this year so I have developed much farther now. These two videos show that I am able to use technology like my iPad and mic to demonstrate how I have accomplished my learning goals in these videos. I was able to show what I had learned in both of these videos, the four shot shows my understanding of new angles and shots that I had recently learned how to take, and the French Revolution videos is a demonstration of the knowledge I had learned about the revolution. Although these were some good examples, I always think that I could have shown by understanding better by maybe looking for more background knowledge on the topic before diving into the video, I think this would have made the video more clear and straight to the point.

The second example here is my Ghost Town and my Run Remake video. Now for these two they are going to show how I can use multiple tools to create knowledgeable, creative products that my group and I are proud of. With the ghost town video we had to use only our iPads and some costumes to create a silent film that told a story, with the use of the whole ghost town this task became slightly easier although not being able to use sound was a huge challenge in my opinion. Then for the Run remake we had to copy this almost professionally done video only using our IPads again, this was a great test of our ability to use our technology to the fullest potential. We could also use a mic this time but it was used not for talking necessarily but more for creating our own sound effects as using other peoples was not available for us. In the end of both projects I think my group and myself really enjoyed the final product and put all of our knowledge into the creation of it.

On to the next two examples which will be my French Revolution 2 and take your kid to work day film, and within these two video examples I will share how I used multiple types of technology to create imaginative solutions, and I think that theses two will show this very clearly. First comes the French revolution 2 video, this was a whirlwind of different types of apps, tools, and sound creation. We had to come up with a way to create a song with video over that and all of it had to have clear audio, so it starts with me making a song for the video in Garage Band  then transforming it into a audio file so we could use it as part of our video, then the animation was done in keynote  with additional drawings done in Sketches Pro , and added to IMOVIE. Although we only used these four tools mostly we also changed them in different was, like the animations and a small build in to emphasize the meaning behind the illustration, another thing I did was take the drawings I had done in sketches pro and put them through keynote so that I could animate then into something that could be used in our video.

Then we have the take your kid to work day which was a very interesting video for me to film, and if you have watched the video than you will know that I tried something new which was trying to film transitions. One example could be when I went from the wall in the gym to the window on the second floor to the window on the third floor where the slow motion tran passed. This was new and in the begging a difficult thing to do but as I continued to do it more it became more natural, but I feel this gave the video a different angle and I new way to show what I had seen and learned while spending time at my mothers school.

Up next we have the Russian Revolution and the American Revolution videos, these two were both very different and challenging in their own ways so here is how we over come those challenges and tested different solutions in order to succeed in our task. First up is the Russian Revolution video and this one was all about the Tzar, his family, protests and eventually the over throwing of the provisional government, all of this was planned out like every other video but what we did was use the spot we had planned on using, but if it did not work we would change the plan. This was because sometimes lighting and noise were more unpredictable and would change how the scene looked and sounded, so by testing the area to see if the visuals and audio would work, we saved time and got the shots that helped us explain the Russian revolution better. The one time this was an issue was when we could only use a space for a limited amount of time, usually when we were in the school, so one thing to work on next time would be finding places where we would have enough time to take a few shots and then be able review them.

Now we have the American Revolution video and unlike the previous video this one wasn’t about setting or audio, but more visuals and timing. This video was animated unlike the Russian one which meant that we did not have to do all the acting and filming around the school, but we would have to create meaningful animations that matched with our voice overs and the script we had prepared. With that in mind we started to create small and short animations to see how well they would work with our script and research and how long it would take our narrators  to explain what was happening within each animation. This did take quite a while to complete but in the end we succeeded in creating a video with animations that followed what the narrators were saying and explained significant events through the revolution.

Now moving onto the next two videos, my Alberta Peoples video and my Drumheller video, in these two I will now share how I expressed myself for many purposes using different platforms, styles and formats that will help me achieve my goals. first off is the Drumheller video which is the one where I talked about my experiences at the Royal Terrell museum located in Drumheller . I showed videos of some of the amazing dinosaurs I got to see and explained I little bit about some that I learned about. I had to use clips to film since that was the requirement but I also transferred that video into IMovie just because I felt I could make the video flow better after editing it in IMovie. I tried to style the movie in my own way, which means all the shots you saw where ones that I thought would work well with this type of setting and the amount of time I had been given. Overall that was a good short film for the time we had to shoot the whole movie but if I had to change on thing it would be the audio, because when we were filming there was a lot of people there because well its a famous museum, this meant that other peoples conversations were getting in the way of my audio. Therefore I decided to voice over most of the parts where I am talking just so anyone watching could understand what I was saying.

Then of course here is the final video of this entire post, and it is my Alberta people video. This one did included many many different platforms and apps to put the whole thing together. To start off I had to creatively think of a way to show how place impact education in Alberta, this is not as easy as it sounds mostly because we had to gather direct information to back our point as well as take many videos and pictures as visuals for our main video in the end. After I got all the videos I needed I put them all together in my own type of style, things like music I like, shots I took that I really like, and anything else that I think show my personality as well as showing my understanding of the topic I have been given.

With that I will conclude the whole post. Overall these post have taught me a lot about video making and what things need to be put in a video to make it successful. There a lot of different strategies when it comes to making movies and videos like these but in the end I learned it doesn’t matter what you do if you don’t communicate the point of the video, and that is something I had to figure out early on to be more successful later on.

That’s all for now.
