Tik Tok and stuff

Today’s topic is going to about the new project that my class has just started. Our driving question is “ how can we convey important issues in todays nationalism through memes”. Just the driving question is enough to have me wondering what is this project going to be like, and here is one of the milestones so far.

For those of you who don’t know what Tik Tok is, I will explain it now. It is in short a social media platform where users post videos of themselves or others doing dances, trends. Memes etc. I am no expert in fact this is my first time interacting with this app ( and hopefully the last ). Here is an example of dance challenges that people do, this one I found is called the 3 Vets Challenge

As mentioned this project is going to about memes, and one form of memes that will be highlighted in this post is Tik Tok. I know Tik Tok is not like the regular memes because it is video based ( even some memes are video based) but the two are actually very similar. When you think about it a memes are basically a form of humour that has a target audience and also conveys a message through either a photo form or a video form. Most will have captions but nowadays they are mostly multiple images combined together to make a humorous image. When comparing Tik Tok and memes the differences are minimal, a definition for Tik Tok could be a social media platform that allows users to share ideas or information through video. If you look at the two definitions, the only differences are that Tik Tok is a Social media platform which means others can interact with the creator, whereas memes are just posted content. For this reason we are incorporating it into our memes project.

Just before we talk more about the Tik Tok videos we made/ attempted to make, I am going to share a little bit about one of our tasks. We had to compare memes to Darwins theory of evolution which sort of makes sense when you think about it. Darwin’s theory states that only the capable will survive because of their ability to adapt to different situations over the course of time, when applying that to memes it means that in order for a meme to be popular it must be able to adapt and keep viewers interested in it, because without popularity a meme is really nothing. For example Shrek memes have been around for a while now but the only reason they are able to still be popular is because people have been able to change parts of the memes to make them communicate a different version of the humour.

We had to try and create some of these Tik Tok videos which were sorted by our teacher. He separated them in to “memes”, dance trends, and creative effects, we had to do one of each ( or at least attempt to do one of each).

Creating them was not as easy as we thought, although we did have a fun time thinking of different ones to do. That will conclude this blog post, I hope you got something out of it.

That’s all for now.
