How To Get Started With Fake Horror

I. love. Horror. I love horror books, movies, real horror, what have you. I first got into horror in grade 6, when I read Our Last Echoes by Kate Alice Marshal. This post will be divided up into mini sections, and mega sections. Alright, lets do this.

Movies and Shows: What To Watch?

So much TV. So little time. Here is my guide of my favourite horror movies and shows so YOU don’t have to decide what to watch. I’m so charitable.

Midnight Mass

Something is happening to the residents of Crocket Island, population: 127. There is a creature on the island; a winged beast that only comes out at night. Meanwhile, a young pastor is performing miracles on the residents. But he has a secret…

The Haunting Of Hill House

“No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood for eighty years and might stand for eighty more.” A grieving family comes together and discovers the dark secrets and horrors that are in the house they grew up in: Hill House. Based on the book by Shirley Jackson, this is one of my all time favourite shows.

Hereditary

This show is one of the scariest I have ever watched. A young girl named Charlie keeps seeing her recently deceased grandma. A child’s imagination? Or something more sinister? Oooohhh speaking of sinister!

Sinister

A true crime writer and his family move into a house that is the scene of a horrific murder. Looking in the attic he finds super-8 footage of more murders. He is being haunted by something… or someone… and it’s using his own child against him.

The Babadook

“If it’s in a word or it’s in a look, you can’t get rid of The Babadook.” A family is terrorized by a mysterious pop-up book called Mr Babadook and the entity that lives inside it: The Babadook

A Quiet Place

Aliens who have super sensitive hearing roam around. Everyone must be quiet. The Abbot family is better prepared than others; they have survived 472 days on their farm, not speaking, not making a sound…

The Chestnut Man

A serial killer is terrorizing Copenhagen. His calling card is a man made of sticks and chestnuts. A chestnut man. A disgraced detective from The Hauge and a detective from Copenhagen are tasked with catching the killer. Finger prints from the Chestnut man point to Kristina Hartung: a young girl who was murdered one year ago. A tragic coincidence? Or something far more horrible? Alright, next section!

Games

Well, I just played my first horrorish game!

The Last Of Us

In a dystopian world, where society has collapsed and people infected by the Cordyseps Brain Infection run rampant, smuggler Joel Miller is tasked with taking a young girl named Ellie who is immune to the infection cross country to the Fireflies, a group set on restoring society.

The Last Of Us Part II

4 years after the events of the first game, Joel is brutally murdered by a group known as the Washington Liberation Front. As revenge, Ellie sets out to kill he people who killed Joel, at any cost. Blurring the line between good and evil, this game is a great sequel to the original.

Haunted Houses

I hate haunted houses. This year was my first time going to Fright Nights at Playland. I got into one haunted house and had to use the emergency exit because I was too scared to continue. For someone who is a huge fan of horror, I find this strange, but whatever. I will never go in a haunted house again!

Top 3 Horror Books

The Chestnut Man by Søren Sveisrup

A serial killer is terrorizing Copenhagen. His calling card is a man made of sticks and chestnuts. A chestnut man. A disgrace detective from The Hauge and a detective from Copenhagen are tasked with catching the killer. Finger prints from the Chestnut man point to Kristina Hartung: a young girl who was murdered one year ago. A tragic coincidence? Or something far more horrible?

It, by Stephen King

Something terrible lurks in the sewers under Derry, Maine. Every 27 years it resurfaces, killing, feeding. But a group of 7 kids are determined to stop it’s reign of terror. Taking place in the 50’s and 80’s, this book is a story of bravery, brotherhood, resilience, and terror.

Carrie, by Stephen King

Yes, 2/3s of this list is Stephen King. He’s good, deal with it. A teenage girl with telekinesis is relentlessly bullied by other students at her school. And it all comes to a head at the prom…

Urban Legends (Only From Vancouver)

The Lady In Red

In the Fairmont Hotel, there is a ghost called the red lady. She usually isn’t much trouble. Most times you see her, she will just be walking down the halls in her red dress. The hotel actually has a drink named after her.

The Night Chopper

In the 80s or 90s, there were rumours about a man driving around in a brown Cadillac who would pick up drunk hitchhikers who were then never seen again. This could be true. In this time there was at least one serial killer operating in Vancouver, who we will get into later.

The Feet

This story sounds like an urban legend, but it is real. Ever since 2007, over 21 human feet have washed up on shore in Vancouver Island, Vancouver, and Washington. They belong to missing people who have all gone missing at different times. It makes you wonder if there is a new serial killer in the Vancouver Island area. However the police have ruled out foul play, so if not a killer, then what?

(In vampire voice) Vell, that vill do it for this part of zee page. I vill see you later!

All right, here’s my next section/post thing!

8 Scary Things: Real Horror

From serial killers and other true scary stories, there is seemingly no end to real horror! I am a huge crime fan (to listen and to read about, not to do) and so this will be about some things true crime, local or otherwise!

Vancouver Serial Killers

Leonard Hogue

In 1965, police officer Leonard Hogue had a mental breakdown. He walked into his wife’s bedroom and shot her in the head. That woke his six children, who he also killed, before turning the gun on himself. The investigation connected Hogue to two robberies, which may explain why he did it.

Gilbert Paul Jorden “The Boozing Barber”

Jorden was a retired barber who loved to drink copious amounts of alcohol. From 1965 to 1988, he killed at least 10 women (likely more) by taking them to a hotel room and forcing them to drink a lethal amount of alcohol. After that, he would leave, and because he didn’t pay for the room, (the woman did) the police would have no way of tracking him down. The police eventually caught him after finding fingerprints linking him to the crimes.

Clifford Olson, Jr. “The Beast of BC”

Olson travelled around Vancouver killing 11 children. He was caught in 1981 when he was trying to kidnap two young girls. What makes the monster even worse is that he sent letters to the victim’s parents. He only agreed to share the location of the victim’s bodies if the police gave $100,000 to his wife, which they did.

Robert William Pickton

Without a doubt Canada’s most horrendous serial killer, Pickton murdered 49 women from 1983 to 2002. When he was caught he said he was going for “the big five zero” and that he “got sloppy”. Postmortem, he would grind the women up and feed them to his pigs. People who knew Robert Pickton said that he was like a slave, his brother being the master. His brother, David Pickton, who is a sex offender, denies that he had known about the murders, which seems reasonable, until you realized he co-owned the farm. David is not in jail, and still lives in Vancouver. I believe the Pickton brothers are guilty, and with one of them out, I’m sure there will be more mysterious disappearances in the Downtown Eastside.

True Spooks

The Omnivore Trials: A Rehabilitation For Ratlike People

This will be a very simple and quick explanation of this story because I don’t want this to be too long. A family lived in a house in Hawaii. They noticed that strange thing were going on in the house: slamming doors, knocked down stuff, things being misplaced or missing. They had gone on vacation, and when they returned, the house was trashed. The kid’s room was pristine. On the parent’s bed there were knives, bandages, and pain killers and a laptop. On the laptop was a document entitled “The Omnivore Trials: A rehabilitation for ratlike people”. Inside the document, The Omnivore Trials were plans for what he decided he wanted to do to them, which was sexual reconstruction and hand transplants. The man in question, Zayas, was charged with burglary and released. In 2020, he got charged with vandalizing a Buddhist temple and beating an inmate to death. He is now in a Hawaii State Hospital awaiting trial. A YouTuber named Mrballen made an excellent video on this that you should watch. The link is here:https://youtu.be/y2YVZRlpmAQ

The Watcher

A New Jersey family moved into their dream home. Everything seemed good until they started receiving threatening letters from someone calling themselves “The Watcher”. Here is the first letter:

“Dearest new neighbour at 657 Boulevard, allow me to welcome you to the neighbourhood. How did you end up here? Did 657 Boulevard call to you with its force within? 657 Boulevard has been the subject of my family for decades now and as it approaches its 110th birthday, I have been put in charge of watching and waiting for its second coming. My grandfather watched the house in the 1920s and my father watched in the 1960s. It is now my time. Do you know the history of the house? Do you know what lies within the walls of 657 Boulevard? Why are you here? I will find out. Do you need to fill the house with the young blood I requested? Better for me. Was your old house too small for the growing family? Or was it greed to bring me your children? Once I know their names I will call to them and draw them too me. 657 Boulevard is anxious for you to move in. It has been years and years since the young blood ruled the hallways of the house. Have you found all of the secrets it holds yet? Will the young blood play in the basement? Or are they too afraid to go down there alone. I would be very afraid if I were them. It is far away from the rest of the house. If you were upstairs you would never hear them scream. The house is crying from all of the pain it is going through. You have changed it and made it so fancy. You are stealing it’s history. It cries for the past and what used to be in the time when I roamed it’s halls. The 1960s were a good time for 657 Boulevard when I ran from room to room imagining the life with the rich occupants there. The house was full of life and young blood. Then it got old and so did my father. But he kept watching until the day he died. And now I watch and wait for the day when the young blood will be mine again. Who am I? There are hundreds and hundreds of cars that drive by 657 Boulevard each day. Maybe I am in one. Look at all the windows you can see from 657 Boulevard. Maybe I am in one. Welcome my friends, welcome. Let the party begin,

The Watcher”

So, after that, two weeks later he sent another letter, where he said he knew all of their 3 children’s names. The letters continued for four more years, and The Watcher has never been caught.

The USS West Virginia

In the aftermath of Pearl Harbour, the USS West Virginia sank to the bottom of the harbour with people inside. There was no way to save them and so the military told the families that they had died in the attack. When, month later, they pulled it up, they found 3 men in the airlock. The men had survived 16 days in the airlock without food or water. Solders who were tasked with guarding the sunken wreck could hear them banging on the walls.

Now imagine you are whisked away to Delaware! Hi. I’m in Delaware.

– Wayne’s World

On Halloween in Delaware, there was Halloween decoration of a woman hanging from a tree. For several hours it sat there until someone realized that it was the body of a 42 year old woman who had hung herself from that tree.

Reflection

I think this mini project went well. We only had 5 days to make this page, and we also had to look at other people ‘s work. I feel like I’ve made it pretty good. I think that the hardest part of this project was the critiquing phase, because I had to talk with people and give them feedback. It’s scary to talk with people! The worst part of this was making another 3000 word blog post about serial killers, only to realize that I made it too graphic. With the other serial killer post, the page would have been over 5500 words long! After that, I didn’t have much time to make another, so I split my first blog post in half. And even though I didn’t get to post something that I worked hard on, I really enjoyed making an entire page about something I’m interested in. It was so fun and I might even continue adding to this page. (In vampire voice) but, ve vill see…

Alright, that’ll do it for my geek out blog post. I’ll see you later. In your nightmares! Mwahahaha!
