Change Makers (Capilano Suspension Bridge)🌲

While most of my classmates were off experiencing the immersive experience of Walt Disney World for our PGP field study, a few of us took a different path. Instead of Disney, we focused on the Capilano Suspension Bridge, exploring how design shapes emotional connections and creates lasting memories. I was part of the Designing Dreams team, and our challenge was to discover ‘How does design build emotional connections and create memories?’

The first step in this journey was getting into our groups. I joined Designing Dreams, and from there, the process began. Our focus was mostly design wich was great for me because that is one of my favourite things. We then created Smart Brevity style notes to help us understand how to use ChatGPT effectively. Not as a shortcut, but as a partner and a tool. After that, we were introduced to the CBL (Challenge-Based Learning) Chart. This helped us plan out our goals, our steps, and how we’d gather evidence during our trip to Capilano.

The most exiting part of the project was actually going to Capilano Suspension Bridge. I captured footage from different angles—highlighting how natural beauty blends with human-made design. I also interviewed a few staff members to understand how the space was intentionally built to evoke wonder, thrill, and connection to nature. All these aspects helped me with my final project. From the suspension bridge itself to the treetop walks and lighting design, every element is designed to create not just a visit, but a memory.

Using the interviews, footage, and voice-over, I worked to tell the story of how the intentional design choices and natural aesthetics of the Capilano Suspension Bridge enhance visitors enjoyment and connection to the environment?

This project helped me see that creativity and design aren’t just about making things look good but about making people feel a specific emotion. Whether it’s Disney or Capilano, behind every great experience are people with big ideas and the skills to make them happen.
