What exactly went into the creation of Canada, and what were the circumstances at the time? These are all questions relating to a recent project, Confederation Commercial. This project involved of course Canadian history, and green screens! In a group (Meg, Kaia, Malaika, Julia, and me) we created a commercial proposing the demands of Canada East before Canada was a country, to join confederation. The most important question being asked was the driving question: How and why did Canada develop into a nation? As I answered this main idea, I learned two specific competencies.

How do we evaluate evidence to decide if it is adequate to support a historical conclusion?

Create:ย

What literacy skills am I using to write, speak, and represent in the texts I create?

How did these colonies come together and why? Working in a group that represented a colonies beliefs and needs really helped me figure this out. Canada East for example, wanted to join confederation because the colonies would be much stronger together as a whole, especially against the United States. The colonies united because they were better together. Of course to get there it was not simple. It took many conferences and some negotiations to do this. We got to create a similar situation in our own class, only rather than presenting our demands by speech we used the commercials. This is just one of the times I used the create competency by sharing demands using literacy skills and representing that in the commercial we created. To be able to represent the colony of Canada East I had to do some research. Whenever Iโ€™m researching I have to decide if that information is both trustworthy and relevant to what Iโ€™m trying to learn. Research relates to the evidence competency. Another example of evidence is that when Iโ€™m watching other colonies commercials, I have to decide weather their information is adequate and useful to my colony.

At the end of this project I had learned how Canada became a nation through many conferences and demands and the people who made this happen. As I went through a similar series of conferences and demands I gained an understanding of the two main competencies for this project. Of course we also created this commercial using a green screen that gave it that classic โ€œcommercialโ€ look. Using a green screen was also something I learned to do. All of these things helped create a final product and understanding that I was proud of.

  1. Nice post Asha! I really like all the photos youโ€™ve included and explanation youโ€™ve included for those. Although it wouldโ€™ve been nice to see some more of what went into making the final video and what problems you mightโ€™ve faced.
