This year I think I have met my goals in agency by setting realistic goals, now I just have to learn to stick to them. Although for the winter exhibition and the PGP mentor for a day podcast I showed that it is possible for me to do that because I spent a lot of time on those projects. I think I did really well in these projects because I enjoyed them, they really interested me, I got to research my passions and set goals I could follow along all the way to university. I think I did well with self-regulation in these projects by managing my distractions, asking help when needed, and setting healthy boundaries.
How can I push myself out of my comfort zone to take more risks and achieve more depth in my learning?
I can push myself out of my comfort zone and achieve more depth in my learning by challenging myself to try new strategies and not being afraid to make mistakes. After reading Atomic Habits, right after it changed the way I started to do my homework, by getting it done right away, split up the work into smaller steps, and not think of it as a chore, but as a learning opportunity. Although recently I have realized I need to get back onto those habits. This mindset has helped me be more organized, which allows me to focus better and get a better understanding of what I’m learning. Making the blog post also made me realize that when I reflect on my learning, that is when I actually learn. Refreshing my memory and looking at all the steps I had to take to get to the final result makes me understand the subject better.
What I have done well in:
This year I think I have improved on not being a perfectionist. I think part of that is that is because I have been leaving things to the last minute more than usual. I am doing this because it’s hard for me to work in a loud environment, and I have noticed I can only work for a certain period of time or else I start to stare off into space or get distracted by everything. At the beginning of starting to work it takes me a while to adjust. I have found for when studying for math or science I use the pomodoro timer, which you work for 25 minutes and have a 5 minute break. I have discovered the trick is to not go on my phone for the 5 minute break or else I would spend more than 5 minutes on it. I either work on other homework or read.
What I could improve on:
My number one goal to improve on is my time management and to stop procrastinating. Along with setting healthy habits, to improve my home and school life balance. I find I leave to do a lot of work at home because there is less distractions and its quieter. Although I need to learn to lock in at school so I don’t feel too overwhelmed with all the work.
I want to be more interactive in class, even though I know large discussions aren’t my strong suit. Realistically, I won’t always participate in them, but I’ve noticed that I learn more and engage better when sharing my thoughts in smaller groups. I struggle with answering on the spot questions because my mind usually goes blank under pressure, when it come to things I’m still learning and haven’t fully understood the big picture. I work best when I have time to process my thoughts, and I find it easier to contribute when I can build off what others have said because they jog my memory. I don’t often raise my hand in class because I need something to get my memory going, which is why smaller discussions or collaborative work help me feel more confident in sharing my ideas.
How are you on track with the VMV that you created for your prePOL?
- I have been using Things, to write down everything I need to do, which helps me stay organized, manage my time better, and make sure I don’t forget important tasks.
- I have been building resilience by pushing through challenges instead of giving up, and I remind myself that learning from mistakes is part of the process.
- I have reached out for help when I didn’t understand something, which has helped me stay on track and improve my understanding of the work.
My Goals for the Rest of the Year:
- Be more interactive with class discussions
- Review material before class
- Ask questions
- Stop procrastinating (I’ve said this every year)
- Create a balance – spread out the work (use the pomodoro timer)
- Set times each day when to work
- Have a planner and schedule
- Set specific times
- Balance between home life and school life
Overall my goal I want to achieve by the end of the year is to push myself even harder in humanities, not necessarily getting an extending, to focus more on the work quality over quantity. By the end of the year I would have improved on areas I may have been lacking in or just want to feel more confident in, such as critical thinking and being able to analyze material given in a deeper way. Practicing critical thinking by looking at different perspectives and making connections between not so obvious things will help me develop to become more openminded and creative. Analyzing text can help in Humanities by improving my writing and become better at problem solving.
I will continue to follow my goals by creating a planner, marking down when I’m going to do my homework and writing the specific time when to work. This will lead to me to stop procrastinating and diving deeper into my work.
