Destination Imagination

Hello there teachers and anyone else with enough spare time to read the blog of an insignificant grade 8. Today I’m going to be talking all about Destiantion Imagination and the process of completing the challenge.
You may be asking yourself, “what the heck is Destination Imagination?”
I’m going to try to explain that to the best of my abilities in this post.  Destination Imagination is a global tournament between tons of schools. The way it works is that there are three age groups and four different challenges. I was in the middle age group and part of the Engineering team. The four challenges are engineering, scientific, fine arts, and technical. The main part of the engineering challenge was building a model of a building and making a video on how opposites can be complimentary. It was a long and rocky journey to getting the final 5-minute video and I’m going to tell you all about it.
If you’d like to read more about the challenge, here’s a PDF with all the details!

We kicked off the process by coming up with LOTS of ideas for everything about the video. Many of them were scrapped but some lead to bigger ideas that eventually ended up in the video. We also assigned jobs and decided on an architecture style and art style for our building. We collectively decided to make our story about a rec centre located in Squamish and selected postmodernism and indigenous for our art and architecture style.

Here is the team poster I created for our team! I’m going to be completely honest here, it took me like 6 hours and blood, sweat, and tears. It is my pride and joy, my only reason for living, and my first born son. I sincerely hope you like it. Our team name was the All Clear Engineers, though I opted for Chicken Nuggets.

Through the process of DI, many ideas were shut down, many hours were spent outside of school working on it, many tears were shed, and many brain cells were lost. All of it was working up to the final video. At one point we even had to refilm the entire thing. My role in the video was an architect helping with designing the new rec centre. My favourite part of the role was being able to wear formal clothes to school on the days we were filming. And if anyone questioned it I just got to say it was for a project and it was glorious.
Our plot follows the story of architects designing a rec centre for a community in Squamish. They decided on a neoclassical building and combine it with a Squamish Nation totem pole and mural. The architects calculate their materials and come to the realization that they don’t have enough materials in their budget for a neoclassical building and switch to postmodernism even though it’s kind of the opposite of Indigenous art. It ends up looking really cool and complementing each other nicely.

I learned a ton about engineering and architecture along the journey which was super fascinating. Here is the model of the building we created! If you’d like to see more angles, check out the final video.
