Comic Quest!

Comic Quest WWI

Hello and welcome to my blog. This is one of the last few posts of my grade 9 year. I Hope you enjoy. This is my favourite humanities project we’ve had before and definitely the proudest I’ve been of my work.

I really loved this project because I learnt a lot about WWI. Before this project I had never been interested in WWI, preferring to learn about WWII. But now that I’ve spent some time learning about it, I’ve started to take matters into my own hands, by watching movies/videos, and reading about WWI.

In this project we were tasked with making a factual, interesting, and original story. Then we had to draw it and make the story into a comic book. I think that because I was much more interested in the subject and topic of the learning I enjoyed it a lot more than our previous project. I really stretched myself with my drawings and am really proud of my comic. I am not a very artistic person, so my drawings are somewhere I really stretched myself. I was super engaged and loved all the videos and media we learnt from during class. I think its safe to say, I loved this project! I also pushed myself and presented an entire presentation by myself because my two group members were away.

The Story Board:

This was the first stage of the comic. I had already came up with a story idea and I was keen to stick to it. My story follows the life of a 19 year old boy, Tom Callaghan, a Toronto citizen in 1915 who enlists in the army, but gets rejected due to his poor eyesight. But he is given one last option: the decoding group. My story is kind of a mix of love, drama, and factual fiction.

The Comic:

This was by far the hardest part of the project but it was super rewarding to get done and I am really proud of my final product! I’m not an artist but I made my minimal skill work out. I’m not sure how to get my comic into my blog but if I find out how I will show you.

The silent battle

Don’t worry, BEE happy🐝

Hello and welcome to my blog! In this post I will take you through the first ever science themed PLP exhibition! This exhibition was very different to the ones I was used to. There was a schedule for visitors and we didn’t get any breaks. I liked it a bit better than the original type of exhibition because it didn’t leave any room for mishaps with the schedule and stuff like that.

Pollination: The Theme

The theme for this exhibition is pollinators of B.C! My group was in charge of the bats! Bats in bc don’t actually pollinate, so that proved a slight challenge but we pushed through and did our best. We made lots of fun interactive elements and games. Our first task was to make a food web. Our food web surrounded bats, we had bats predators and food sources. It was put together with hand made drawings from all of my group members and really added the final touch.

This project was super important because it was the first ever science exhibition! It was all about pollinators in B.C. The exhibition was pretty fun and I think I did a really good job. I didn’t shy away from all the people coming to our booth and at the end of the night my voice was raw from talking! During the actual exhibition, I think I put in my best effort. I’m really proud of myself and think myself and my group did really well by educating the public about B.C bats!

I know this was a pretty short post, but thank you for reading!

My Learning Story: TPOL Edition

Welcome to my second ever TPOL! This post will cover my learning journey throughout the entire year.

⚠️ Every project title will have a link to the blog post of that project (if applicable)⚠️

TPOL Declaration:

“Thank you for coming to my presentation of learning. I am the expert on my own learning. I am also responsible and accountable for my own learning. You can expect me to give an honest evaluation of my progress. We will discuss my strengths and opportunities for growth. Thank you in advance for listening and for offering feedback that I can use to improve as a learner.”

Driving Question: Why do You Feel You are Ready to Advance to the Next Grade Level?🏎️

I feel ready to advance to the next grade level because I’ve grown a lot both academically and personally this year. I’ve worked hard to keep up with my schoolwork, improved my study habits, and learned how to manage my time better. I also feel more confident speaking up in class and asking for help when I need it, which has helped me understand things more deeply. This year has taught me not just facts and skills, but also how to be more responsible and independent. I know grade ten will be more challenging, but I’m ready to take those challenges on and keep growing. I’m excited to learn new things and keep pushing myself further.

My Vision, Mission, And Values:

Vision:

On my graduation day I will find myself being a happy and healthy person, having reached my goals and being ready to move on into adult life. I want to have no regrets about my grades in school and my actions. I want to be able to leave school prepared to be an active citizen in society. I will able to further my education in the form of going to a college or university that fits my preference.

Mission:

To reach my vision I will have to work hard in my grade nine year to prepare myself for the years after. I want to have a good mindset about my learning and also have the thirst to further it. I will have to be able to successfully balance my school and home life by being responsible with my time and homework, so that I don’t get discouraged or too stressed. I want to stay active both physically and mentally, so that I am more engaged at school.

Humanities:

In the Name of the Nation: 🇨🇦

For this project we used our video making skills to create a short 5-7 minute video about why Nova Scotia should or should not join the confederation of Canada. This project was a little bit difficult to film at times because of costume mishaps, missing group members, not enough time, location troubles, etc…

I didnt really challenge myself in this project because I wasn’t super interested in the topic and so I kind of shut myself down and didnt bother to be fully into it. I feel like I should have tried to make our video a little more captivating and made an effort to help with the editing. Although I was very proud of my note taking skills this project, I don’t think it was my best work.

Skills I showed/need to work on:

  • good note taking
  • Paying attention when we were watching videos/reading textbook excerpts
  • Doing something different and trying an accent (was pretty amusing)
  • Not pushing myself to go beyond and extend my learning
  • Not showing much enthusiasm on the subject
  • Not helping with the editing stage (although I did help in other aspects)

Comic Quest WWI: 💥

In this project we were tasked with making a factual, interesting, and original story. Then we had to draw it and make the story into a comic book. I really loved this project because it was all about WWI. Before, I had never known much about WWI and I was never very interested (I preferred to learn about WWII). But now I can confidently say that I have learnt a TON and am interested to go beyond and learn more myself.

Skills I showed/need to work on:

  • interested in the topic
  • Note taking, and being engaged in class (asking questions etc…)
  • Pushing myself to do my work to the best of my abilities
  • Creating a creative and original story that no one had done before
  • Not being very time productive
  • Working to the very last minute

Maker:

7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens: 📚

This project was not one of my favourites. Although I think that if I was a bit more open minded about it, I  could have come out of it with much more learned. I’m afraid to say that the book we had to read was not a book I was interested in. I did love the YouTube shorts that we made to display our learning though. For each of the three habits, we made a short 1-3 minute video displaying the three habits. The last video was on the final habit and we had the same criteria as the first two videos. I think that I was pretty creative with the videos and I definitely enjoyed filming them. Although I wasn’t a fan of the book, (7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey) I did learn from it.

Skills I showed/need to work on:

  • creative ideas for displaying learning (with help from my group members of course)
  • Good time management (having everything done on time, not rushing my work etc…)
  • Good marks on the pop quizzes about the book
  • Setting time aside for out of school work
  • Meeting criteria on all of the videos we made
  • Not paying enough attention to the book
  • Not having an open mind about reading the book and putting it off to the last moment
  • Struggling with being productive during class times (most work was done outside of school)

Mini Doc: 🎥

For this project we had to find a moving story and make a mini documentary on it. I think that this project was very haphazardly done and not very put together for me because there was a lot of stress about the spring exhibition and I had just moved onto my boat and there wasn’t much free time to film a documentary. I definitely did not do this project to my best of abilities. I really should have pushed myself more and did a better job, but there was a lot going on so I had barley any spare time to really put my best effort into a mini documentary.

Skills I showed/need to work on:

  • creative filming style
  • Good use of editing skills
  • Not putting my best effort
  • Procrastinating
  • Bad time management
  • Not fully immersed in class

Science:

Don’t Worry, BEE Happy: 🐝

This project was super important because it was the first ever science exhibition! It was all about pollinators in B.C. The exhibition was pretty fun and I think I did a really good job. I didn’t shy away from all the people coming to our booth and at the end of the night my voice was raw from talking! During the actual exhibition, I think I put in my best effort. I’m really proud of myself and think myself and my group did really well by educating the public about B.C bats! During class I needed to be a bit more engaged and needed to use the class time more productively but other than that, I think I showed a lot of interest and did well.

Skills I showed/need to work on:

  • preforming well during exhibition (loud speaking voice, knew exactly what I was talking about, didn’t shy away from questions or comments, good mindset, good attitude)
  •  Not using time in class productively

How Have I Showed Growth as a Learner this Year?

I have showed growth as a learner by being engaged in class, submitting work on time and being an active learner. I tried really hard to have an open mindset about every project we did this year, and for the most part, it worked. I think I am a respectful student and I enjoy learning and pushing myself. There were definitely moments this year when I was struggling for time or had a lot on my plate, but I still managed to hand in my assignments on time and to (mostly) my best ability. Nearing the end of school, instead of shutting down and not being as active, I found myself being more interested in the learning, being more engaged, and learning more. I’m really proud of myself for not folding under the pressure of homework, and knowing when to prioritize my time.
