After so much waiting it is finally time for the PLP 10 Florida trip! Yes this year for our field study we went to Disney World Florida…for school. Now you may think there is nothing to learn at Disney other then what food you want to eat or what ride you want too go on but there is actually a lot more to learn.
We started off the project learning about our main change maker Walt Disney. After some interesting information we started learning about what we were focusing on specifically. There were four categories to chose from; Making the Magic (Technological), Designing Dreams (design), People Power (people) and Under the influence (influencer culture). I chose to focus on Designing Dreams because I thought it was very interesting the way that you can tie memories to physical objects and places. Whilst we were in Disney we were tasked with creating a video based off of a topic you chose that related to our group. I really wanted to hone in on how scent and sound influence memories and how it affected me.
One day we were in class finishing up our driving questions and then 10 hours later we were boarding our flight. Personally I have never been to any theme park of any sorts so Disney was a huge change for me. If you asked me to describe Florida in two words I would probably say hot and humid. Stepping out of the airport was definitely a shock.
For the first day in the park we spent 16 hours there. 16 hours. As a person who’s not the biggest fan of Disney things Magic Kingdom wasn’t quite my heaven but I did definitely have a good time (maybe not by the 15th hour).
Now throughout all the parks I noticed a lot off different sounds that would sort of transport you to these fictional places. In places like the Pandora part of Animal kingdom you could hear sounds of Alien like creatures that sounded incredibly realistic. And for smells most of the rides would have a specific scent that I could 100% connect to it.
As a class I think that this trip was an incredible way to bond and become more of a whole. I made so many incredible memories with the class including a group wide beach volleyball game.
I ended up getting three interviews done in the park but to my horror when we got home I found out that two of them had no audio. Finishing up my video I think I did convey the message that I took from Disney and all the memories I made along the way. Here’s my video if you would like to take a peek!
I think that I did genuinely learn a ton about my topic and I actually now have some memories that are connected by sound and smell. It will definitely be a trip that I will remember for the rest of my life.
