It’s Time to ‘Work’

On November 14th something truly truly extraordinary happened. I went to work! At my dad’s job. It was surprisingly interesting.

My dad (click here to see his blog about his job) is a geographer and a professor at UBC. He studies rivers and how they affect the land and how the land around said rivers might affect then, He works in a laboratory where he tests hypotheses about those things. I got to go work in his lab with his students, as well as sit through a couple meetings.

And of course, I had document my experience at my dad’s job. What I mean by that is that we had to make a …(dramatic pause)…..a VIDEO! Yep, another one. If you want to hear more about certain specific aspects of working in the lab and the experiments that are done there, click here. If you want to see the video, just click below!!!

My Process for Creating the video:

We started off by making a storyboard. After having made the storyboard I made an action plan, meaning that I planned out what shots I would hope to get I was there.  I decided to make the videomuch like a “day in the life” of kind of thing, and make it hour by hour, like a vlog. Creating and Filming the video was difficult enough, I had to find different angles, where I could leave my iPad to shoot because well I would be working all day! I used copyright free music to add in the background and had to film my dad’s interview at home because there was no place at work that was quiet enough.

My reflection on this whole experience:

When most people go to their parents job or think about doing that they might automatically think about sitting behind desk all day. As you might have witnessed in the video, I did not get much time to sit around. I really really enjoyed gong to my dads work, specifically because i was not sitting around all day. I’m somebody who likes to work while moving, I like to use my brain but I like to do active things while thinking. So getting to do lab work was really a lot of fun. I connected this experience with a lot of the work we are doing with in Science. In science we are running many more experiments and really testing our hypotheses which is something I did a lot of when I went to work with my dad.

What I want to do when I am older:

As much fun as “working” at my dad’s  job was, it isn’t what I want to do when I’m older. If I’m being honest I don’t fully know what I want to do. But i did gain some insight from going to work with my dad, I don’t want to have a job that involves sitting at a desk. I like testing things and learning new things and moving around and being able to be creative when building things. I’ll just have to see where that takes me, I made a flip book of my favourite parts of the day which you can see below!

Well that’s it for me! I hope you enjoyed the post and the video, leave me a commet below!
