Learning intention post( humanities)

My learning intentions

For this project, I want to improve my creativity skills by generating a number of ideas that contributes to task objective. And I will use grit to help me with that

For this project, I want to improve my self directed learning by attempting to solve challenging problems before I get help and I will use grit to help me

Some stuff about the project

So, this project for this humanities portion of the year is more about English than history. Which is something new because I think we haven’t done a more English based project since grade 8, so this is kinda an opportunity to learn more English. Some skills that I would like the learn in this project are my English skills and knowing more about the English language. I also want to learn more to analyze texts to find deeper meanings within them. But still, this project still relates to WW2 in some way because some part of the project is about Canada after WW2. The driving question for this project is How can we explore what poetry and short narratives reveal about identity, power, and perspective? To me, this is familiar because we did a poetry project in grade 8, but from what I’ve read about the project, it seems its going to be a bit different than what I did then. Since this project is also about WW2, we have to know about our understanding of WW2. So in conclusion, this is what I know about the project and how I connect to it.

WW2 reflective post

After learning about WW2 and enduring a winter exhibition, its now time to reflect

So in humanities, we have been learning about WW2 for the past few months now. We mostly learned about fascism in Italy and Germany, propaganda, technology in WW2, battles, and major events. Now for the exhibition, we integrated our knowledge of WW2 and related it to Avatar.

Learning intentions

So in my learning intention post, one of my intentions for this project was to better my critical thinking by analyzing information before I make an argument or point. Now I think I did well with this specific learning intention because it was one of the most important learning intentions for me because I wanted to better my critical thinking skills. Now relating this to my VMV, I did want critical thinking to be analyzing topics to find a deeper meaning. Some things I did to show this were my research on WW2 in some of my project benchmarks I have worked on, reflecting on WW2 movies or other topics.

My learning journey

The original driving question for this project was, “How do stories, media, and propaganda shape how we remember World War II?” Now, let’s start on what part of WW2 was the most interesting and impactful on my understanding of the driving question. We watched a Band of Brothers episode in class. So what is Band of Brothers? Band of Brothers was a TV series from WW2 and the show centred around a group of soldiers fighting in WW2 and in this certain episode, they make it to a German town where at that time, Germany surrendered and they find a concentration camp. This was impactful to me because the Allied forces found something else they were fighting for other than their country and it was an impactful moment for them too. This surprises me on how we tell stories about WW2 and the Holocaust because it can be in so many shapes and forms, such as movies, TV shows, books, and propaganda and probably many more ways. One of the hardest parts of this project for me was connecting Avatar to WW2. This was because it was hard to find a correlation between them and it was hard to see it because it was not obvious at all. One way I overcame this challenge was using pattern recognition between them and one way that helped me overcome this challenge was research time in class. Now one way this project made me think differently about WW2 and there are a couple of reasons why. One reason was because different countries tell different stories on what happened in WW2, like China might tell their story on WW2 in a different way than Britain. The last reason was in this project, WW2 was worse than I previously thought it was and this was because of the Holocaust, the destruction and the resistance in Germany against the fascist regime. One thing I also noticed was how this project tied into our Canadian identity project. They tie in somehow because in both projects, propaganda was shown and told in some way, secondly, Canada was contributing a lot on both world wars, like in WW1, there was Vimy Ridge and in WW2 Canada contributed with D-Day.

Wrap up

Now, reflecting on this project, I think this was a valuable project to me because it helped me see how people view WW2 differently and learn about what happened in the war and other contents in the project. Some new habits and strengths I developed in this project were my critical thinking skills, which improved because in the research portions of the project, critical thinking was a valuable skill to have. I didn’t really develop new habits for this project, but I did learn and understand WW2 better as a whole. Now, some things I have learned that I might want to carry into other projects are my researching skills and critical thinking skills because they will be important to have for research portions of a project. Now, this concludes my WW2 project post.

Atomic Habits Post

After reading atomic habits, making our systems and coming up with our goal, we put that to the test for 1 week.

So for the past few months last year, we worked on a big PGP project, the project centres around a book called atomic habits. Atomic habits is a self help book written by James clear, atomic habits talks about how compounding habits (atomic habits) lead to big results later on. The book helps in breaking a bad habit and forming lasting good habits.

Personal goals within the project

Some of my intentions for this project was to improve my self directed learning by planning out my stuff. The main goal I wanted to focus on for this project was being on my phone less and one of the reasons I chose this was because I think my phone was affecting my sleep quality and I knew being on my phone too much had negative consequences. Some skills that I had to use to achieve less screen time was self discipline and consistency. I had to be self disciplined by making sure I stick to my systems and stay in line with my screen time limits. I also used consistency to keep my screen time at a consistent moderate level. Some reasons that theses goals and systems may be important now is because I want to get better at snowboarding because I’m on the ski and snowboard team, so me being on my phone less gives me more time to practice snowboarding. Now one way this may be important for later in life is so I can study more in uni so I can do good in my classes and me doing in my classes will help me get the job I want. Now after doing my habit and systems for a week, some things I’ve noticed was I felt better waking up in the morning because your phone can affect your sleep and I also saw myself finding other things to do other than being on my phone, like I went outside more and did others things and I also became more aware of my phone usage.

Some my learning

Now, the driving question for this project is “How can improving by just 1% each day help me take responsibility for my learning, strengthen my habits, and create balance and purpose in my future career and life?” So now firstly, one of the most powerful ideas that I learned from atomic habits when I read it was where James clear mentions that starting small and compounding it overtime leads to big results. Now relating this idea to how it changed my motivation, consistency and mindset is when I start very small, it makes it seem easier and with the help of other systems and tools and it also helps with motivation because it’s so small and that makes it so easy. Now onto the hard part, one of the hardest challenges in this project is when I was doing the habit for 1 week. Resisting the temptation of going on my phone was one of the hardest challenges I did in this project. The way I adapted when things didn’t go perfectly is I kept resisting and I decided to find other things to do than being on my phone, now sometimes I caved in to my temptation, but I quickly got out of it and one thing I learned from atomic habits that I did that helped me was my systems. One of my systems was where I put a screen time limit on all my devices, including my iPad and when I became aware of my screen time and realize the limited screen time I had left, that helped me keep myself on track. For the final product of the project, we had to make a habit video which was about how the 1 week of doing my habit was. Now one thing I realized was how it made be better understand my habit and daily routines, this was because I became aware of my habits more and I thought about them more in that week. Now to wrap this up, this is my learning story throughout this project.

Habit system MindNode

Conclusion

Now its then end of this project and its time to reflect more. Now, was this project valuable to me. I would say it was not so much because I think the goal I chose was too hard, so it became kinda frustrating and atomic habits had good advice, but I didn’t feel like I didn’t get much out of it because self help books and these kinds of project don’t feel as valuable to me because of that. But, I did develop some strengths like I became more aware of myself and knowing what I need for myself, and I understood what James clearly was talking about. But, a 1% improvement is valuable create balance in my future career life by maybe balancing personal heath and work so you can be more happy at and outside of the workplace. So in conclusion, this is my reflection and a wrap up to this project

Teach Your Teacher Reflection

After writing instructions on how to add live short codes, showing him how to add them. I have done it.

Some context and how I got here

So this will be the first maker project that we are doing, which is improving our blog posts because Mr. Harris said that all of our blog posts are quite bad from last year. So this project is to improve the visuals and the way we tell our stories in our blogs. One of the activities I did today was teach Mr. Harris how to add a cool feature in WordPress. I did live shortcodes and a divider, which I put above the text here. The process of making the instructions was easy and intuitive, so it wasn’t too hard to do, and then I had to show Mr. Harris how to add shortcodes and dividers. It went well mostly, but on his screen, it didn’t show the dividers, which was a problem.

Reflection on teaching Mr harris

So the main part of this part of the project is to teach Mr. Harris how to make your blog look cool. So I taught him how to add them. It didn’t go as smoothly as expected because there were some technical issues on his side. The divider was not in a style he selected. I could have done better on teaching him because it didn’t go as smoothly as I wanted it to and I could have come up with a backup plan because it didn’t work. So in conclusion, it went okay but there are some things that I would like to improve upon so this doesn’t happen again.

Learning Intention Post (PGP)

My learning intentions

For this project, I want to improve my Self directed learning skills. I will do this by using a planner and making a path for my own work. I will stay with this intention using agency.

For this project, I want to improve my creativity skills. I will do this by brainstorming and striving to make a beautiful product and creative product. I will use agency.

Some things I know about the book, what I want to learn, and my connections to my VMV and personal connections, plus to the driving question.

So, before this project started, I knew and heard about Atomic Habits from people in business and successful entrepreneurs. They said that the book was a valuable reading experience and they recommended the book for aspiring entrepreneurs. Some things that I want to learn from this project are breaking bad habits and building good habits, with the methods from the book. One other thing that I want to learn about more from this project is to read the book and see what James Clear says in the book. So to connect this to my VMV, I said that I wanted to improve my creativity skills and I wanted to improve my self directed learning. I would like to tie in my goals from my VMV and this learning intention post for this project so I can stay accountable for this project. Also, if I end up staying to the goal I wanted to stay at 1% each day, It could help with my vision for my graduation. To connect this to the driving question, which is How can improving by just 1% each day help me take responsibility for my learning, strengthen my habits, and create balance and purpose in my future career and life, I think I want to improve 1 bad habit, which is being on my phone too much, I think this would be beneficial for me because it can give time for me to do something more productive, such as a hobby or a job. Plus this could benefit me for the future by me being productive and having high grades in brutal engineering classes. I think that getting rid of my bad habits can improve my life and create balance and harmony in my life. In conclusion, this is my learning intentions and connections for this project.

WW1 Comic Reflective Post

After learning about many things about WW1, learning how to make a graphic novel, and drawing our own story for WW1, I have completed my own novel.

So we are approaching the end of the year and it’s almost summer break!! So anyway, this humanities project was mainly on WW1, we learned about WW1 mostly by learning about the different battles, such as passhindale, Ypres and others. We also learned about comic books and how they are made and structured. And eventually, we made our own comics and mine is finished. The driving questions for this project is.How can researching the historical significance of World War I inform and enhance the storytelling in a graphic novel I create?

WW1 and comic learning

One of the first things we did was, obviously learn about ww1. Ww1 tensions were on the rise between countries and Franz Duke Ferdinand was assinated which started the war, we learned about many battles, such as the battles of Ypres, passindale, and many more. We also learned about the life on the frontlines during the war and the sad realities of war. After learning about WW1, we learned about how to make a comic which we needed to help make our own comic. We learned about some techniques, such as bleed and reverse.

The Final comic book

The final product for this project is a comic book on events that happened on WW1, we make up our own character and our own topic of interest. I chose tank operators in the battle of Cambrai, where the use of tanks were the most successful. The tanks in the battle of Cambrai helped the allies take 8km of territory on the first day. I usually drew most of the images in procreate and keynote. I hope you enjoy reading my comic

Reflection

So looking back at it now, learning about ww1 was interesting to me because I did not learn much about history in elementary school, so this was something new and It fascinated me. Secondly, drawing the comic was not an enjoyable experience to me because I am not good at drawing and I did not really enjoy it. Lastly, my comic ended up decent despite me not being a good drawer. So in conclusion. I think the comic ended up decent despite me having no drawing skills.

Short documentary reflection

After watching a doc per day, filming, and editing, I have made my short film of the year

So we are approaching the end of the year and it’s almost summer break, yay!!. For for this maker project, the main goal is to make a short film on a story we have to find. We also watched documentary’s to learn about how they are made and why they have meaning. The driving questing for this project is. “How can I use film to tell a meaningful story from my life or community?”. So lets get into it now!!

Stuff we did in class

Some of the stuff we did was watching a documentary per day. We had to make notes on those movies with questions to find out how the film techniques shape the story of the film, we, after watching the documentary’s, we started to plan out our documentary. Like b roll, story map and other things.

Final product

So the goal is to make a YouTube video, a documentary on a story we have to find, I chose my dads motorcycle adventures around Europe on his trip to Italy in his 20s, the lesson of this documentary is that motorcycling is a fun sport, but has its risks and problems. So enjoy my video!

Final Reflections

So overall, I think this was a good way to end off the year for this maker class to make a high quality video and show that through our storytelling, filming and editing techniques. So overall, I think I did well with showing my skills and I think I did good at wrapping up the school year with this short film.

Pollination and spring exhibition

After learning about reproduction, learning about pollination and pollinator and enduring a spring exhibition, I have completed the last science project of the year

So we are approaching the end of the year and at the time of writing this we’re at the last week of school, so this project is mainly about pollinators and how we can protect and preserve them .the driving question for this project is. “How can we support and protect local pollinators to ensure healthy ecosystems in our community?” And this blog post is made to answer that.

Reproduction

One of the first thing we did in this project is we learned about cell reproduction, mainly mitosis and the stages of mitosis. Learning about mitosis and these reproductive methods was interesting because this is something I have never learned about unlike other science project where already knew what was being taught to me. We also learned about meiosis in plants and also pollination.

Spring Exhibition

After learning about pollination. We were put into groups for our spring exhibition. We did some exhibition prep for two weeks, which was not a lot of time for an exhibition. We worked on pamphlets, a petition, food, games, and other stuff related to the exhibition. For this exhibition, we were bats. Bats do pollinate, but not in BC, which made it a challenge for us to show bats for our exhibition. But in the end, we did it anyway, and our pollination exhibition ended up being the best thing we did for the exhibition. So, in conclusion, this is what happened during our spring exhibition.

Reflection

So reflections on this project, I think this project for being the first science project being in a PLP exhibition went very well, people liked our stands, the others teachers liked it and the other grades liked our stand, especially ours. Secondly, the process of preparing the stand was enjoyable, despite the little time we had compared to other exibitions we did. Lastly, for this project, I probably learned the most new stuff out of any science project which was good for me so I wasn’t too bored in class. So in conclusion, this is my reflection on this project

TPOL

“Thank you for coming to my presentation of learning. I am the expert on my own learning. I am also responsible and accountable for my own learning. You can expect me to give an honest evaluation of my progress. We will discuss my strengths and opportunities for growth. Thank you in advance for listening and for offering feedback that I can use to improve as a learner.”

So this is the final POL I am doing for grade 9 so I am going to talk about my vmv and the goal s associated with it and the habits I learned from it and also why I should go to to grade 10. Also I am going to talk about my favourite projects from each PLP class.

Maker

So my favourite project I did for this class is the peak potential project where we went to Alberta. One of the reasons I feel this is because, we mainly went to Alberta which was a fun trip to go to and the nature of Alberta as well, but I think the main reason is going outside of the comfort zone the whole time on the trip hiking at least 10k per day. Lastly, it’s also the videos we made there such as the interviews and the ghost town video which I am most proud of. In conclusion, this is why this is my favourite projects in Maker.

Science

For Science, my favourite project must be the chemistry project were we learned about compounds, this is my favourite project because I liked the labs the most where we burned certain compound the Bunsen burner and it burns different colours. Secondly, I enjoyed the learning that I did in this project because I actually learned something new in science in this project instead of learning what I already knew. In conclusion, this is why this is my favourite science project.

Humanities

For my favourite project for humanities, it has to be frankenstuffies. Firstly, I liked it because I enjoyed learning about the Industrial Revolution and it was interesting because the western countries advanced so much because of it. I also liked it because of the final product which is a movie about our stuffies and I liked the process of making the video. In conclusion, this is why I liked this project the most in humanities.

VMV goals and Habits

So At the beginning of the year, we made something called the VMV, Vision, Mission, Values. Which I probably talked about in other POLs. The VMV is a document I made at the beginning of the year and it talks about my goals and how I will achieve them.  One of my first goals was to procrastinate less and I think I have worked on that goal for all of grade 9, I feel like this goal hasn’t been achieved yet because there were some times that I procrastinated and I feel like i have to work on that more. The second goal was to hang out more with friends at school, and I have achieved that goal for this year. My third goal was to be more active and I have been working out for 6 months and the other goal was to sail a lot more and I am working on it, just got apporoved to sail the boat I want to sail. The last goal was making money in any way, like a job or side hustles. I feel like I have not done much in that goal but I want to work on it.

Success behaviours

One of the most important things I used to achieve the goals I have achieved are the sucess behaviros I have in my vmv. Such as agency, I used agency for getting myself to work out and showing resilience so I can keep working out consistently. I also used agency to start sailing again for this season by singing up for the club and going to the orientation for the boat I am sailing. For engagement I used that to start hanging out with my friends at school, such as at lunch because I used to go home for lunch a lot in grade 8. I also used engagement to contribute in class more often and aid in discussion. I used collaboration to engage and contribute to group projects more and be a reliable and trusted team member. So in conclusion, this is how I used the core comptencies to achieve and work on those goals in my VMV.

Final reflection

In conclusion, I think I did well with my goals from my VMV this year and using my core compenticies for acheveing those goals. But also, I think I still have things to work on, such as procrastination and working on my engagement. So in short, I think I did well this year and I am ready to move on to grade 10

Nationalism Reflective Post

After learning about nationalism, and spending a month filming our final video, we have finally found out what the fate of PEI is.

So this project came to us after spring break and as you might know, this project is based on nationalism. We mainly learned about Canadian nationalism and we did some other activities on it as well, then we filmed our final video about whether PEI wanted to join Canada or not. The driving question for this project we had to answer was. “How has Nationalism’s influence shaped the global structure? Moreover, how has Nationalism impacted the establishment of Canada as a nation?”

Nationalism Stuff We Did

So some stuff we did was we were put into group of around 4 and we were given a random form of historical nationalism and I and my group got Indian nationlism, we had to make a presentation about it and we did pretty good on in. Some of the other things we did were we learned about how ww1 influenced Canadian nationlism and we also learned about the Canadian confederation and the history of how Canada became a nation. I feel like I have learned a lot in this section of this project we did and how I should have pride in my nation and stuff like that, plus the ww1 stuff we did as well. So overall, I think I have learned a lot in this part of the project

Process Of Making The Final Video

For the end of this project, we had to choose in assigned groups, we had to choose a nation to make a video about whether or not PEI wanted to join Canada or not. We chose PEI and we did research on our providence and I did population composition. We also did some additional research and after we did that, we started filming for about a month or so. We did not have a good time fillming and we could have done it faster. But now the final product is finished, so enjoy our video
