What the Romans did for us
The meteor
In the year 2028 earth was struck by an asteroid, causing destruction and world wide chaos. The World leaders managed to take control and rebuild many country’s. After the asteroid the world leaders announced a plan to build a space station to protect the world from future asteroids strikes.
20 years later,
On moon station Alpha, we find captain Ford and his lieutenants, Brian, and Cole, that command the station. Cole is unhappy because nothing really happens on the station. The last asteroid the station blew up was before Cole arrived and days pass slowly as nothing is seen on the scanners.
But today would be different, on a routine scan an asteroid is detected and identified as a concern. Suddenly the energy in the room changed, and the team began to prepare for its arrival. They calculated that they would be able to see the asteroid when it blew up. As the asteroid comes into range they launch the orbital defence missile, it blows the asteroid to bits. Cole yells “another one bites the dust,” suddenly the scanner alerts them that some of the shards are flying in their direction. The captain orders everyone to suit up in case they are hit causing an explosive decompression. As the shards come flying at the station the crew holds there breath. Then they are relieved that only a small portion of the shards hit the outer part of the station were the green houses that provide oxygen for the station are. The crew rushes to close down the air lock, Cole slams the button to close the air lock and saves the station. Captain Ford orders a damage report. As Cole approaches with the report, Captain Ford says, “Enough excitement for you Cole?”
Cole replies, “Maybe a bit much considering those shards could have killed us. The damage is minimal we have locked the green house down and managed to save some of the plants”.
Meanwhile on earth, only small meteors hit and no damage was done. Unknown to all, the meteors held a tiny insect like creature that devours plant life. It is miniature in size with a rapid reproduction rate. This miniature creature begins to explore earth.
Back on the station the crew is noticing that the plants are dying. The captain orders Cole to find out why. Cole discovers the shards that hit the station were carrying an insect like creature that eats vegetation. He contacts the president and warns him of the danger and possible catastrophic effects if we this thing is not controlled. The president orders his top scientists to figure out where the meteors have stuck and how far insects have advanced.
Within hours the scientists learn that several meteors landed in Iraq, Mongolia, Japan and South Carolina. The president warns the other country’s. He also orders the US navy to go to sea and take as much plant life and food as possible. The world leaders discuss the best plan of action. The world leaders agree to set up safe zones on land for those they can save and find a way to kill this thing. They contact space station alpha and ask what theories they have to kill the bug.
Back on the station Cole tells the captain, “We have enough food and oxygen for one week. But there is more news, we can save the world.”
The captain asks, “How?”
Cole replied, “My theory is the bugs are immune to all pesticides but they will die from radiation. If we can get the correct amounts of radiation to the effected areas, we can kill this thing.”
The captain replies, ” Right, if we can get just enough radiation to kill this thing, then we can go home.”
Cole replied, “Well not exactly sir, we don’t have any radiation sources up here. The scientists on earth will have to test it.”
The captain says “Well ok, but why can’t we go home?”
Cole replies, “Sir, the bug eats vegetation but it can travel on humans and animals and we probably all have them on us.”
The captain asks, “So that’s it, then? We can save the human race but we can’t save our selves.”
Cole says, “That’s correct.”
The captain replies, “Well that’s a good way to go out, saving the human race.” He pauses, “Inform the crew.”
Cole informed the crew as Captain Ford informed the world leaders saying, “We have found a solution, we can put small amounts of radiation in the infected areas that will kill this bug and it will be livable in about one year.” The world leaders congratulated the crew and thanked them for there service.
In the end, the human race survived but many countries could not be rebuilt or put back together. But they never forgot the crew of space station alpha.
Over a 3 month period 1.3 billion people and over 3 million tons of food and plants were safe guarded and world leaders began to plan permanent residences for the saved.
