At Battle in a Rowboat.

Hey everyone it’s week three of In Their Own Words!!! This week we learned about Dunkirk. The evacuation via Dunkirk began on May 29th and ended on June 4th 1940.

During that week 340,000 allied troops were evacuated from Dunkirk to England. It was definitely not an easy escape, with England lacking the military resources to evacuate all the soldiers. Civillian boats braved the dangerous journey to save their troops. When I first heard this story I envisioned big fishing boats or small ferries helping out the military, but actually it was every type of boat… even small rowboats made the trip. Boats as small as this made the journey across,

Which I think is just incredibly amazing. To learn more about the captains of these ships I read the book “The Little Ships” which is from the perspective of a young girl who helps her father sail to save troops from Dunkirk.

Reading this book gave me a much better perspective on who was involved in the evacuation of Dunkirk. This book really humanized the brave civilians that risked their lives to bring soldiers home. The pictures in the book were beautiful and showed me the horrors and events of this event better than facts could. “The little ships” ultimately gave me a better understanding of what Dunkirk was like, and I got to learn more through a really fun book that I enjoyed reading.

Until next week, Kaia
