Atomic Habits learning intention post

Let’s set some learning intentions!

As a class we have just started to read Atomic Habits by James Clear. We have already done a couple assignments with this book. One of them was a Habit mind map. I highlighted my habits that I am working on layering into my life. Some of these habits are helpful to me, and some are unhelpful.

Throughout this project, I will keep looking back at this mind map to remind me of the habits I am working on.

What do I know?

So far we have only read the introduction to the book. Basically, it has explained James Clear’s backstory and how he started working on his habits. So far I am enjoying the book, and I am going to start reading more. I know a lot about habits because I apply habits to my life every day. Whether it is in my morning routine, my sports, my schoolwork habits, or nighttime routine. Some habits benefit me, but some don’t. I am using my habits every day. Some habits are ones that I am trying to do more, like manage screen time or doing my homework right away.

This book will help me set good habits, and effectively apply them to my daily life. It will also help my layer good habits on top of each other. Now for what I want to explore further!

What I want to explore further

I want to explore how to manage your habits. Maybe how to maintain your routines with good habits, and keep it consistent. It can be easy to let your habits slip and give up

Another thing is keeping a routine. This kind of connects to the last one, but having a set routine will make it easier to manage my habits and apply them to my daily life.

New Habits

Doing homework right away, and not procrastinating.

This is a habit I am trying to work on in my life because I am finding that on weekends I leave my homework to Sunday afternoon. This is not a good habit. Many night a week I have sports, so I need to get my homework done before that so I am not up late doing it. Because after soccer practice I still have to eat and shower and everything! And if I get my work done before that, my mind can be fully focused at whatever sport I am at. It is an easy habit to slip into because there are always things more enjoyable than homework, but they aren’t more important. My brain can tell me that they are just as important, when they really aren’t. I think staying organized and using Things to help me is always helpful. I am taking advantage of it!

Learning Intentions

I will strengthen my self-directed learning by trying to keep a healthy balance between school work, sports, and all my other activities and events. I will try and get my work done before my sports, so I am not leaving it to the last minute and procrastinating. This way I will help myself stick to the habits I am working on in my life. My VMV will help me with this learning intention by using my self regulation to stay on task while on my iPad, and managing my stress and workload.

I will use my communication skills to clearly communicate my ideas and work to my teacher and classmates. This will help me express my habits and how I will apply them to my life. I can use my VMV to help me with this learning intention, because in the communication section I mention being able to use feedback to do effective revisions. I can also use my communication skills to give constructive criticism to classmates to help them out.

WWII Learning Intentions

I am back! I haven’t written a blog post since June, so here is my first blog post to kick off the school year. This blog post is a little bit different because we haven’t completed or even started this project yet. Instead of a reflective post, this will be about setting some personal learning intentions. But before I jump into that, I am going to reflect on what I know about WWII so far.

WWII Knowledge

I don’t know everything about WWII, but I do know quite a bit from reading books, watching movies, and learning about it in school. In past years, we haven’t gone into depth though. I find it quite interesting, and I am eager to learn a lot more about it.

I do know about the Holocaust. During WWII, Adolf Hitler was leading Germany. He was a dictator, and he believed in racism, anti-democracy, anti-semitism( hatred towards Jewish people). He was an awful person, and he wanted a “Pure” German race. He was the leader of the Nazi party, and he turned Germany into a dictatorship through propaganda and fear.

During WWII, there was extreme segregation and discrimination towards Jewish people. The Nazi’s stripped them of basic rights and jobs, and sent them to camps. They lived in awful conditions. They soon were sent to death camps, which were awful. The Nazis mass murdered million of Jewish people in death camps like Auschwitz. Hitler used propaganda to make the citizens believe that the Jewish people were the problem. They used things like books, movies, and posters to spread hateful information and beliefs to people.

Propaganda

How do stories, media, and propaganda shape how we remember World War II?

This is the driving question for this upcoming project. I have mentioned propaganda a couple times already, but I want to say how dangerous and strong propaganda can be. It spreads false information and beliefs to people. It also makes people go against what they believe in. Propaganda uses lies, fears and emotion to get into peoples heads. For example in Nazi Germany,  they used propaganda to convince millions that “Jews were dangerous.” That made people discriminate, and it spread hatred. All based off of lies and false information.

As I have learned, stories and media can change over time. I won’t answer the driving question yet, because I haven’t done the project yet! But, to learn more about propoganda, we did a little assignment where we chose a big event (sports, government, wars, e.t.c). We picked an article from back when it happened, and then compared it to one written recently about the same thing. I was in a group with Julia, and we chose to write about 9/11. Here are our two paragraphs, and then our comparison paragraph.

Article From Sept 7th, 2001

The attacks did not stop with just the world trade centre. Another hijacked plane struck the Pentagon, and destroying the heart of the nations military operations. A fourth airplane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after passengers were thought to have resisted against the hijackers. That very plane that crashed in Pennsylvania was guessed to have been heading to another target in Washington. Thousands of people are missing or dead, including first responders such as police officers. Those lucky to escape the tower were caught in life threatening smoke, ash, debris, and toxic dust from fallen metal and concrete. Rescue efforts are still in motion, but the big picture of this tragedy is only beginning to come into view.

Article From Sept 11th, 2025

Remembering 911

Not only did the hijackers hit the twin towers, they also hit the pentagon, which is the US military headquarters. There was one more attempt, but passengers fought with the plan hijackers and took the plane down in a field in Pennsylvania. It was aiming for Washington’s capitol building. It was found that 2977 people lost their lives that day. Among them, 441 first responders lost their lives. It is now realized that pelle who were in the buildings, or surrounding them are starting to develop illness due to breathing in the toxic fumes, smoke, and dust.

Comparison

So what has changed in the way that people write about 911? We found out that nothing much has been changed, only more information found and a change of tone. The tone has greatly changed though. Back in 2001, they were shocked and fearful. They were fearing that the events could lead to a war. The article written this past year has a tone of remembrance and sadness. People mourn the losses every year, and remember how awful 911 was. We didn’t notice any change in details, except numbers of deaths and injury. This awful event that took place in time will have a memorial forever and all those people who lost their lives will be endlessly remembered.

This assignment demonstrated how much, or how little facts can change over time. A big reason for information changing is propaganda.

What do I want to explore further?

1: The Holocaust

I wrote a bit about it already, but I find it super interesting and I want to learn lots more about it. I want to know more about the details, and how it ended.

2: Pearl Harbour

I know barely anything about the attack on Pearl Harbour. I read a book once a long time ago, but I want to know more. I want to know the reasons behind the attack and how the USA responded to that.

3: D-Day

I really know nothing about this, except that it was a very large battle on sea. Obviously I need to get way more information on this!

Personal Learning Intention

I will strengthen my self-directed learning by trying to keep a healthy balance between school work, sports, and every thing else. I will try and get my work done before my sports, so I am not leaving it to the last minute, so that I can actually get a good sleep!

I will use my self-regulation to stay focused during class, and use my iPad responsibly. I will also go on do not disturb while in class or doing homework.

I will try my best to stick to this learning intention throughout this whole project. I am super excited for this project because I find it super interesting. That makes all the difference!

In my VMV, I mentioned how I want to work on self directed learning, and self regulation. I wrote how those will be applied to this project. I will keep reminding myself to check back on my learning intentions throughout this project.

Thank you for reading my pre-project post! 👋
