Status and Indignity questions

What does “status” mean in Canada, and how does it shape identity and access to rights and resources?

Status must be obtained by owing a status card to get these cards you must apply to the government and wait up to 14 weeks. Cardholders get benefits like tax breaks on status land, they also get post secondary benefits, and some health care benefits.

To obtain a status card you must be at least a quarter native.

Why do you think some people falsely claim Indigenous identity? What are the consequences of this?

Some people like Buffy saint Marie fake indigenous status to boost there fame or to get the benefits of being an indigenous person

The consequences of this are obvious, it’s illegal, frowned upon, and its just not right to do that.

How has your understanding of Indigeneity, identity, and authenticity evolved through this study?

Throughout this study I have learned so many new things like: new terms, 60s scoop, status cards, and the Buffy saint Marie controversy.

Using all this information I’am able to confidently partake in a conversation with someone whether its to argue with them or to teach them.

Learning about this information is super important becasue this is a big part of our history and still is a big part of our daily lives. With this information I can properly teach somebody that doesn’t get proper teaching on this topic.

What is the difference between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation? Where do we draw the line?

There is a fine line between the 2 while its super important to appreciate the culure some people take it to far and it ends up being racist.

For example if a white principal dresses up in a indigenous outfit and sings a indigenous song Infornt of his school that would be racist even tho hes trying to teach kids indigenous culture.

What he should’ve done is get a real indigenous chief to come in and teach or teach the kids in a more respectful way,

What responsibility do we have when discussing these issues outside of class?

We must use facts that we 100% know are true becasue if you are teaching people that dont know anything about indigenous peoples and they go and spread that false information it begins a whole line of false information spreading.
