A Car-Hop helping some hungry customers!

You may or may not have heard, we’re doing another Exhibition! If you are new, or just don’t really know what an exhibition is, is basically the grand finale to the year that we, the students, put on for you, the audience. We incorporate all the years learning, and we put it into a form of presentation that is innovative! Because of COVID, we are only doing a Spring Exhibition, but we would normally have a Spring Exhibition AND Winter Exhibition. And another thing that has changed because of the pandemic, is the form we are presenting in. Usually we would have the audience come in through the front doors of the school, and walk around, like a museum exhibit, or something similar to that. This year, we’ve shifted entirely, to the outside. In this form of presentation, the audience won’t even get out of their cars. You may be asking, well how are they going to see your beautiful work, Malaika? I’ll tell you. Through a Drive-Thru! Isn’t that fun? I think its going to be a different experience for all the PLP grades, seeing that everyone is involved in this Drive-Thru Exhibition, but I imagine it’ll be fun to put on. Each grade has their own part in the drive-thru, and the Grade 10s, are representing the 1950s, post-world war two. Obviously this won’t work unless we all put in work, but I wanted to back up to the Drive-Thru idea. What is the history of Drive-Thrus? Where’d they come from? And what do they do?

One of the first drive-thrus in America

The Drive-Thru was invented in the 1930s, and were used to provide business and service that allows customers to buy products without leaving their cars. The concept was pioneered by an American, Jordan Martin, in the 1930s. Drive-Thrus also could use extra people, called car-hops, to serve and bring products to the customers in their cars. Fun fact, my dad was once a car-hop for White Spot in the 1980s! Now, Drive-Thrus are used for all different things, it spans across the entire world, used for business that are in retail, banking, and restaurants.

McD’s 1960 drive-thru

The Drive-Thru changed the game of the fast-food industry. In 1948, it became popular to dine outside, rather than in the restaurant. It offered speed, efficient, and lots of laziness. Lots of other big fast food chains started to see it working with customers, and adopted the idea, and now you don’t see any fast-food restaurant, without one.

What do you think of the Drive-Thru idea? Did it help or hurt the customers to never get out of their cars? Lets talk down below in the comments!
