The Power Of Predicting sales

For todays post I will be sharing the steps in my latest project that is all about sales and how we can predict how one sale can grow over time. There were a lot of important parts in this project so I will be going through a bit more things in this post. Here we go.

For this project I would be choosing a product or service and selling it to someone I know, based on the sale we made I would then creating a graph predicting how much money I would make if I continued the sell this product.

When choosing my product I had to be sure to pick something that I had an interested in. I used the connecting and reflecting competencies to connect my own passion to a mathematical concept. If I had nothing to do with the product I was selling then I would likely not do well in selling it because I had no connections to it, plus its better to sell something you are proud of. With this in mind I chose origami as my product because not only is it a skill of mine, I have also been practicing it for years now and I really enjoy making different things with just paper.

Because origami is not just one product or service I had to make many different designs and then based on which ones sold the best I could make graphs, for this I used the understanding and solving competences to find the best way to create the graphs. I choose to make three different dragon designs, a crane, ninja stars, and a senbazuru ( multiple cranes attached together).

After this I created a quick spreadsheet that shows all the expenses of making the origami creations. The paper is not that expensive per creation and the start up cost is just time, so my profits in the future should be quicker than if I took lessons on how to create origami.

Going to the next small step which was learning how to translate graphs and equations. I took a short course on Khan Academy which taught me how to find equations in graphs and how to calculate the steepness of a slop. This would be important when I started making my graph for my product.

The last step before creating the graph is creating the equation, for this I can show my use of the communicating and representing competency because I am able to represent the basic mathematical equation for my graph. The basic equation y=Mx+b is what I used but for M I put in my sale price minus or expenses divided by the time it took to create one of my product. With this I could find out how my product would do over an hour, and one year.

Before when I said I would have to narrow down the products to just two, well it turns out that the most popular creations were dragon two made with nice paper, and dragon three made with normal paper. Now that I had just two I could create two different graphs and compare them to see which one would turn out to be more successful. Here are the results that the graphs produced.

As shown the second graph is the one the produces the most money over time, even though the cost of making one item is mere expensive than graph one, the profit is still much greater than that of the first graph.

Overall in this project I learned a lot about how to sell products and how difficult it is to create them.

That’s all for now.
