Status And Indigineity

Hi everyone, welcome back to my blog. Today we will be speaking on my latest BC first peoples project. This project was about indigenous status. The driving question for this project was, “How might understanding the sensitivities around indigneity , help us understand B.C. First Peoples?”.

like most of my projects we started out by entering a phase of understanding. We built knowledge and got the chance to speak to an indigenous lady involved in our school District. She shared her past experiences and how her status affects her on a day to day basis, whether that be micro aggressions, racism, or any other form of discrimination.

Next we moved onto a quite controversial topic, that being Buffy Sainte-Marie. We discussed how she claimed indigenous descent, her motives, if she helped indigenous people, and if she was actually indigenous. We then did a brainstorm mind map on her.

after our mind maps we moved onto my favourite part of this project. The talking circle. All of us brainstormed our answers and opinions to certain topics and when it was time, we had a meaningful discussion.

I believe I had good answers to the discussion questions, as well as good follow up questions, but most of all I had a good mindset that allowed me to explore and understand other peoples opinions. This was truly a great project and I am quite proud of my work, but most of all, I am proud of my learning.
