how its started how its going

Introduction

I think this project is one of the projects that has gotten me thinking the most. We learned so much about medieval and renaissance times. This project really set the path for some really interesting thoughts that occurred to me. I now realize the thousands of different things that affect my worldview every day thanks to this project.

Launch

First meme

This is where we looked at the main idea of the project for the first time, and it was a really nice way to kick of the project. Here we had to create a before and after meme. It had to be something that showed a change in everyone’s life. For my before picture, I found a picture from my first week at PLP. For my after picture, I found a picture from the week before. This showed how much I have learned and matured through being in the Performance Learning Program.

Museums

We had to look into some online museums and find some different pieces of art. We had to observe all the different arts and find what is similar and unique to each painting. We then had to plug all of the observations into a mind node document.

Museum exhibit/milestone 1

This was our first milestone and my favourite milestone. Here we had to create a museum similar to the online ones we made a mind node document about with different symbols that connected to me somehow. I put the picture of how it started how it’s going meme into it, a picture

of some food showing my love for cooking and a statue of my cat and goggles showing how I swim and love my cat.

Building knowledge

Worldview MindNode

This is where we found out what worldview is and how it affects us. We looked at all the different aspects of worldview; Knowledge, Beliefs, Society, Time, Geography, Values and Economics. We then had to write an example of all the different aspects of world view and plug them into a MindNode document.

Collage/Milestone 2

Here we had to make a collage of memories that had affected our world view. We first had to learn about a story spine and make a story spine with multiple events that changed our worldview. We then had to choose a picture for each of these events and create a collage about it.

Cornell notes

Then we started to research different historical events through an extremely interesting way of taking notes. We had to research different events that occurred in the medieval and renaissance times such as the black death, the crusades, and the Medici Family. We made these notes using the Cornell method which is basically writing a topic on one side of a line and then writing the information about that topic on another side of a line.

The test/milestone 3

Here we were assigned to write a test about one or two historically significant events and connect them to our worldview. I chose the Black death and wrote how it changed the way economics work because of the black death and how they affect my life today. I did okay but I could definitely show how it affected my life today with a lot more detail.

Develop and critique

Milestone 4

Now we had to write a conclusion and an argument to show our worldview. For the conclusion we had to answer the driving question; “what can we learn from the past, and why does it matter today”. We then had to try to write an argument for a lesson that I learned from history, which I can Apply to my worldview.

The Teams

We were now given teams based on the topic we chose in milestone 3. I chose economics so I was put into the economics group. We were then all given roles. We had one person called the Directly responsible individual or DRI, Two Flexible group members or a Flex, An art and room design, and my job as the writer.

Milestone 5

Here we had to make an extremely interesting art piece art and that would soon be put into the final project. We started by getting into our groups and deciding on different ways we could show our world view aspect. Our group was economics and we chose two main ones. Each group member had to find an art piece that shows or worldview aspect. The one I got was about gaining money through one’s parents. I chose a picture about a newly coronated king and stuck Trudeau’s face over the top of his face. This showed that Trudeau may have become Priminister because his dad was also Priminister. I also had to record an artist’s statement that talked about the painting.

Present and reflect/The exhibition

Finally, the day we were all waiting for came: The exhibition day. How did we prepare for this you may ask well each one of us had to put our jobs into action. Since I had the writer job, I had to write the guided tour intro. This would basically be the introduction to the guided tour that would display all of our art in a virtual museum. All the writers had to then get together to prepare for the zoom meeting that would be explaining the guided tour. When all the writers got together we had to explain what we did and how we did it.

Core competencies

Questioning and predicting

My class time was used pretty well. I listened in class with the occasional distraction. I think I need to start getting into the habit of putting my phone in my bag without the ringer on to make sure I am not distracted. I think I could also come to school less tired so that I can concentrate on my work better.

Communicating and representing

I think my projects could have used some work. I think I had a lot of trouble finding out how my worldview today is affected by events in the past. I think in the end I figured it out and understand a lot more of my worldview.

Applying and innovating

I think that all of my projects had a lot of thought put into them and definitely helped my group with the project. Since I was the writer I had to do my job by my self and I did a pretty good job at writing the guided tour intro.

Conclusion

In conclusion this project was super fun and I definitely enjoyed it. I’m so happy that we did this because I learned so much. I loved being part of the economics group and the zoom meeting was super fun. I would definitely love to do a project like this again.

Queen fun facts

Introduction

Freddy mercury was one of the greatest singers to ever live and changed the way people listen and play music. I wanted to find some super interesting and surprising facts that are not well known about Freddy.

1 Brian may named his guitar the red special.

2 of queens music videos where filmed in roger tailors garden

3 Michael Jackson persuaded queen to make another one bites the dust

4 Freddie mercury designed the bands crest

5 Freddy mercury wrote a crazy little thing called love during a bath

6 Freddy mercury loved star wars

7 Freddie mercury once took princess Diana to a gay bar

8 Freddie mercury’s birth name was Farrokh Bulsara

9 he was born in Zanzibar

10 Freddy mercury had 4 extra teeth

Conclusion

In conclusion I think that we should continue to be inspired by Freddy mercury. Even though some of these facts where really unsuspected and weird i think they where pretty cool. My favourite one being that he wrote a little thing called love during a bath.

Cooking cultures

Introduction

cooking is something that I’m really passionate about. So for the student blogging challenge I decided to do cooking since I know so much about it. In this blog I will be sharing all about how cooking works and my opinions on foods from across the world. I hope you enjoy the rest of the blog.

Asian food 🍚

I think that’s Asian food is one of the most untouched or specifically unique foods. It has its own taste. Asian food is often based entirely around rice no matter where you go India japan china even Thailand everything is based around rice. What separates the different Asian cultural food is the spices they use while cooking. For example there are two main curry Indian curry and Thai curry. They are separated by the spices they use. Indian curry powder is the very different from Thai curry paste. Indian curry powder is made up of turmeric coriander and other spices from India like that. Where Thai curry paste is made up of chilli and lemon grass. So each Asian culture is unique. The problem now a days is that things like sushi and Chinese food has been altered from what it originally was and a lot of the food is just a cheap western spin off from the original meal.

Italian food 🍝

Italian food is really interesting because it basically is made up of food from all over the world. The most notable Italian food is spaghetti. Spaghetti was basically a remake of the Asian noodle. What happened was many explores like Marco Polo went to country’s like china and India in search of new ideas. One of does ideas happened to be chinas noodle which explores brought back to Europe and remade it to make spaghetti. What I love about Italian food is that it’s basically a really good experiment that helped create food as we know it.

Mexican food 🌮

Original Mexican food is a lot different from what we see today. Mexican food thousands of years ago was made up of some really random things like mangos and other fruits to maggots. Old Mexican or Hispanic food isn’t for me. They even ate guineu pigs and others such things which I could not see me eating today. But when the Spanish came they found a lot of new plants like corn and avocado. They decided to make many new meals that we see today like corn bread tocos and guacamole.

Conclusion

In the end I think there like 4 thousand more food cultures that I could have gone over but I think I go the main ones down. I think that all food has its own special way. I think food really shows the beauty of different cultures and what people can create from the land that they live in. With out food tons of good times and ancient traditions could not take place.

My cat

This photo is the one of the first photos I ever took of my cat. This changed my value world  view. Since now one of the biggest things I Value is my cat. I used photoshop to make a really good looking picture of my cat.

My cat has changed my world view on life. He definetley is a big part in my life and is always there for me. He’s super cute. I was so happy the first time I got him i photo shopped this picture of him.

my cat changes my life everyday so this picture shows how much I care about him.

Laser laws

Introduction🗣

This project was super fun and I cant wait to share everything that happened over the last month. I went form knowing nothing about light to understanding the pythagorus theorem through the many milestones and workbook pages assigned to us. So here’s a summary for how I got to the end of quarter 2.

Launch🚀

Mind node document/milestone 1

We started this project if with a mind node document with a bunch of questions about light and its laws. We then had to answer them. This actually really help get the basic understandings of light. The mind node document document also answered a couple of questions that where not answered the in the entire project like.

Laser tag

We also played something called laser tag which was game gear two teams should try and direct lasers and try to hit the other persons target. I don’t know how much this taught me about lasers but it was still pretty fun.

Here’s a picture of mind node document…

Building knowledge🛠🧠

In the building knowledge section we really started to dig into light and its properties.

workbooks

First we looked at all the different waves from ultra violet light to gamma rays. This gave me a good idea on what different frequencies of light looked like. 3.2 built on that a showed how different frequencies of light shows different colour. After that we learned about how light shines through glass in workbook 3.3.  On workbook 4.5 we looked at how light reflects and the laws of reflection. This helped me understand that light reflects in a 90 degree angle which would be a big part later on in milestone 5. On the work book pages I think I could improved a lot. It was hard for me to push my self to do the workbook questions and often got distracted. I still think I learned a lot and completed most of them but still feel like I could of done a better job with the workbook pages. The work book pages definitely helped me learn a lot about light and probably is where i got most of the knowledge for this project from.

Math text book pages…

In the math text book pages we learned about the pythagorus theorem. This is the theory that states a2 b2=c2. I also learned that this can only be used on a right triangle and nothing else. The Pythagorus theorem helped my group in milestone to create or final design. I think that i quit easily understood the pythagorus theorem and actually found it quit fun to do the math work sheets. I think that i did really well on this and would like to learn more about the pythagorus theorem.

Quizzes/Milestone 2

For  the final section of building knowledge we had to test out selves with some man academy quizzes. These quizzes had five multiple choice questions that we had to answer. This really helped me realize how much I actually knew about light and helped me get a good view on the overall project.

Milestone 3

In milestone 3 we made pretty much a mini milestone 4 and 5 with a group. This was the first project that we really started to test the pythagorus theorem. In this project we were assigned to some how create a laser display that somehow tests the pythagorus theorem. I think that this milestone went buy pretty fast but what I can remember this was the first time our group really worked together and started to argue.  I think that during milestone 3 we should of learned how to work better as a group so that’s in the future we could been more productive and not had as many fights. If i can remember this project went pretty well and was pretty fun.

Develop and critique ✍️👂

Waves simulator

The first thing we did for develop and critique was the wave simulator he we tested wave lengths and frequencies using different calculations. I don’t think personally this did much for us during the final project but definitely helped me understand wave frequencies a lot better then before.

Milestone 4

Know on to what I thought was one of my favourite parts of this quarter. In milestone 4 we had to test the pythagorus theorem and the laws of reflection through the scientific method using a online light and reflection simulator (that is really annoying to work with. This really opened up or driving question (“How can I demonstrate a sustained intellectual curiosity about a scientific topic”) and helped to build my individual knowledge on how milestone 5 would look like. For my question I took three triangles one of them being 90 degrees and tested each one of them to see if I could get the pythagorus theorem to work. Obviously none of them worked except for one of them which was exactly ninety degrees. Even though I already knew the out come of the experiment it still gave me a better on how science is normally tested; Many people constantly testing it to make sure that it is correct. Milestone 4 also played a big role in helping me understanding the scientific method since this was one of the first projects I have done that has relied on the scientific method. I didn’t actually finish entirely milestone 4 since I forgot to add the part where I test the law of reflection, but i took that as a learning experience that i should read the instructions more carefully next time I do a project.

Milestone 5

On milestone 5 we finally got to the final point of the project. We where all put into groups of four and had to make a laser display using all the knowledge that I gathered since the. Beginning of this project. My group tried to get our laser back to where it started and used different calculations like the pythagorus theorem and our understanding of the laws of reflection. We seceded in the end but still had a lot to work on. We struggled to work as a group especially since some of felt un motivated to do the work and didn’t really get much done while others tended to over ride every one and not let others do work. Even though we kind of messed up as a team I still learned a lot about the laws of reflection and how laser work in real life since on this milestone we actually could see the laser.

Curricular competency’s 📃✏️

Questioning an predicting.

This is the one that I think I did the worst on and could definitely improve. Questioning an predicting means did I use all my class time appropriately and the answer is a hard no. I was often times distracted on my phone and needed reminders to get of. I think I can improve this in the future bye putting my phone away a not getting distracted by every distraction. I also think that I should try to stay more motivated to do my work and not get as distracted. If I do that I think that in future subjects I could really improve my productivity.

Communicating and representing

This one I guess I did the best on. This one pretty much describes my love for science or how much I showed my understanding for science. I think I did pretty good in Both milestone 4 and 5 but could of definitely improved and put more detail into my work. I also think that I could of done better if I had added the laws of reflection to milestone 4. Which wasn’t done and could definitely of been improved. So in the future to improve I am going to read instructions more carefully and thoughtfully. I will also try to add more detail into my projects to make sure they are the best possible typing they can be

Applying and innovating

This is the one where we really messed up as group. Applying and innovating was basically could you work well together and create a project that looked good and had all its assets. In my opinion the reason I was bad at this was because we could not work together as a group. I wasn’t really motivated to do work abs other members didn’t really me work because of that. So it was harder for me to work especially unmotivated when others members of the group took control and acted like it was there project. I obviously could of done more an tried to force my way into helping the group instead of being told I couldn’t help with this part and just sit down. So I think all group members messed up here. None of us really wanted to work together and struggled to even try to make a working group. I think In the future we could try to listen to everyone’s opinion, let everyone help, keep everyone motivated and not it all the work on other members of group.

Final thoughts🤔💭

How I think this project interacted with Project Based Learning.

I think that this project did a really good job at letting the students figure out how to do the project themselves. The reason I think this is because we constantly had to test our knowledge through countless experiments. We had to learn through the experiments if light and its laws where correct. So in my opinion this project really helped me learn how to find information on my own and in this case through the scientific method and experiments.

What this project taught me

I think one of the biggest things that this project taught me was how to use the scientific method. In my opinion the scientific method is one of the biggest parts of science an I didn’t know much about this project really helped me see all the different parts of science and how scientists test it. I obviously also learned a lot about light, but more specifically how to calculate it and use the pythagorus theorem. I also learned to consequences of not working well as a group and not reading over instructions.

How I think I can improve in the future

I think that in the future i could definitely do a better job at not getting distracted and paying attention in class. I definitely think there is a lot of space for me to improve on. In the future I am going to try to keep myself more motivated and try to stay on task. This quarter definitely. Taught me a lot about that and I hope in the future i will do better.

What I liked about this quarter

I think I liked the overall science part and being able to experiment. I found the light project super interesting. I think what I liked is when I really started to get into learning I wanted to find out more about the projects subject and I discovered a lot of new subjects in physics. I also really like the fog machine and playing with the lasers.

What I disliked about this project

I really have to say there’s not much I disliked about this project I think that it was mostly fun. I think that the part of the project that went badly was mostly my fault. So I cant really think of anything I didn’t like.

Project end mind map 🧠📜

For the final part of this blog we where tasked to add some of the new things we learned to a mind node chart so here is all of the knew things I learned added on to the old things…

Conclusion 🏁

I think that this project really helped me improve my skills and gave me a lot of knowledge on light. After the countless experiments workbook pages i think quarter 2 was awesome and am definitely gonna miss mr Gross and schematics . I hope that grade nine will be some what as fun as this. I learned a lot from this quarter and am looking forward for another project just like this one

Fractions of your time

This projects driving question was “what percentage of our time is scree time”. To answer that question around 29% of my day is spent on my screen. That’s not horrible compared to some people not trying to be mean but is still over a quarter of my day. This helped me realize how to control my screen time better and get more sleep. I will definitely be using what I learned from this project to help stay more healthy in the future.

Understanding and solving: I did a great job on this part as well. At the start my chart I put all the necessary equations and numbers for my project to work. But as we went on I started to ad a lot more things. Including new calculations and new columns. I added none screen time things like sleeping and exercise all to make a big beautiful chart

Communicating and representing. After the chart was made I started making all the charts. I took all the information from the chart and tried to make 1 or 2 pie charts. These charts were essential so I wanted to go further. I used made some extra charts that I thought were super cool. So I decide to make some more and I did. I pretty much got addicted and made 11 charts. But had to stop because I had to present. In all I made some really nice looking charts and a wonderful presentation over all.

Applying an innovating: I really think me and Zack did. Good job on this one. We both worked on our homework with out distracting each other. We also gave each other critical feedback when necessary and always helped each other when one of us did something wrong. We also did a great job giving each other Ideas and helped each other stay on task.

How does what we Hear, Read, See influence us?

I think what we hear, read, and see influences us greatly. It influences where we go what we wear and even what we eat. It took me a long time to really realize why this is so I’m going to tell you the story of how I figured this out. It really started on milestone one. This was the first time that I really realized how ads try to manipulate us with strategies. I really got a good look on the secrets and little details that all matter to make an ad perfect.

The next time a I saw how an ad influence was in Milestone 3. In Milestone 3 I realized how people try to manipulate you through what society is like. For example the ad I did was a coke ad from the 1960s this ad was basically coke trying to make people believe it could help you loose weight. I saw how society in does days didn’t really know much about health. Coke ads now a days are more about equality since that’s what society is kind of like today.

After all of that I had a pretty good idea on how what we read, hear, and see influences us, but I still wasn’t hundred percent and was a bit confused on a few things. One of the things I was confused on was why people are so cautious when picking who is in there ad and why ads where so racist in the 1940s or 50s. Milestone five really helped me understand this. I was a little confused on what the Medium is the message meant but it suddenly clicked. He was trying to say that the medium sends a message. So if a person got someone who please the target audience then the ad would be successful because the medium is the message.

When the final draft came or milestone six I was ready and knew the driving question. I was ready to make an awesome ad.

Samuels Review On “The Medium Is The Message” Project

Introduction

This project has been super fun and I’m so glad I was able to be part of it. So, I am going to give you  a review on everything that happened so far, all the way from the beginning. We started off with our first milestone: the “Welcome Home” Text Analysis. Here, we had our first look on the driving question “How does what we hear, read, and see influence us?”. We then moved on to our next milestone: “The Historical Media” Analysis. Here, we look at how different cultures throughout time affect how what we hear, read, and see influence us. The next milestone we did was: the “Historical Advertising” Analysis. This was the same as the one before, but it was an ad and we went into a lot more detail. Milestone 4 was our first team project as we made an ad for a local business of our choice. All of these milestones were here to help us create our Deep Cove business advertisement for “Bluhouse Market & Cafe“, which is basically an ad for the business that our North Group chose.

Launch

The launch phase is basically how we got started. The first thing we did was our need to knows. We needed these to start our project and get a good understanding of what we were gonna do later on in the project. Part of our launch was the Welcome Home Text Analysis. This gave us a good understanding on how to make an ad and how to analyze the target audience of an ad, and the different ways that ads try to persuade you. We had to analyze an Apple HomePod Mini ad about a girl dancing called “Welcome Home”.

Getting ready

To get ready for the Deep Cove advertising we had to explore a lot of different things, such as how to make good camera angles. Ms Willemse showed the importance of grids and other such camera techniques. We took notes on different ways to make our ad better and made a mini halloween skit with our North Group. We also looked at historical perspectives by picking an ad from a long time ago and comparing it to an ad that would have been used today. On this project I chose to do a tootsie pop commercial from the 1980s. I looked at this ad from a historical perspective and answered the five key questions of media literacy. Later on we had to do another historical perspective but this one was in much greater detail and we focused more on historical perspective.  On this project I chose a coke ad from the 1960s. We also looked at pathos ethos’s and logos. These are different techniques used to get a person on your side or to agree with you. We looked at some different techniques and appeals that can be used to persuade some one in a ad. We also read the gospel according to larry. This is a book about a kid named josh who gets famous by telling secret sermons under the name larry online. The book was super interesting and taught me a lot about how media works.

The AD

When the time had come to finally make my first individual ad I decided to go with a Christmas theme. My first individual ad wasn’t the best. I tried to redo it multiple times but it wasn’t really looking like an ad. When I got the feedback from my around they wanted me to change the ads colour. The also said that I should put the phone number at the bottom and so I did that. It still wasn’t really looking good though so I decided to take a different angle and talk about how the bluhouse had a new online delivery service. This ad turned out to be awesome. When it was time to make a group project we decide to use a picture Teva took and from that we made an entire ad that looks really good. We used some techniques and appeals some pathos ethos and logos and followed the design principles to make a really outstanding ad!

Conclusion

Now, that we are at the end of this advertising journey I wanted to say some of my favourite parts and what I think about the project. my favourite part of the project was definitely actually making the ad. I loved using Canva and creating an ad. I liked this because it was super fun creative and really taught me how to make an ad. My thoughts on this project so far is that its really fun so far. I think it was great Idea to incorporate the larry book into this and how we got to make an ad. I think that everyone did a great job on this project and that I hope to have something like this again.
