What was the impact of global exploration?

This project was about the Age of Exploration, The Columbian Exchange and the Golden Age of Piracy. This timeline of events takes place in the years 1400-1600. The first major event in this timeline was when the Portuguese King hired a sailor named Vasco De Gama to sail around the southern tip of Africa and find a trade route to India. De Gama’s voyage was successful, and would lead to the discovery of the Americas by Christopher Columbus. The columbian exchange happened after Columbus landed in Cuba. The Columbian Exchange was a trade of resources, diseases and slavery. At least 1/3 of those things were good.

For our project, we used an app called ARMakr to create a short informational film about the impacts of global exploration. In my video, I did a basic timeline of events from De Gama’s exploration all the way to the Columbian Exchange.

To make our video, we used Keynote to make drawings that we would put into our videos. We filmed our videos outside, so I filmed mine at the lacrosse court at Myrtle Park. After filming, we went back inside to do some editing with iMovie. After we finished our videos, we uploaded them to our personal YouTube channels.

We also got to watch the movie “Captain Phillips.” It was pretty good. 8/10.

Curricular competencies and how they involve the driving question.

Analyze cause and consequence

For this competency, we had to be able to identify what makes an important event so important. We used this skill on Milestone 2 where we got to make a web of important events relating to cause and consequence. This helped us to understand the driving question because I used the abilities I had learned from the past milestones to understand what historical events impacted the present.

Discussing, Listening, Speaking

This competency is about the ability to demonstrate proper verbal skills. We used this for the final product in the voice-overs during our videos. I used this competency to understand the driving question when we practiced the scripts of our videos by reading them to a partner.

Empowered learner

The Empowered Learner competency is about using the technology at a sophisticated level to make the final product. I used this competency when I was making the 3D objects in Keynote, so that I could put them in my AR Video. This helped me understand the driving question as I used the technology I was given to gather information on the subjects we were learning.
