S.W.E.A.T Program (Vancouver Art Institute)

The Vancouver Art Institute is again offers the Structured Work Experience and Training program for 2012. This year’s program features a number of options for dedicated students. Salvation Army Kettle Campaign NEEDS YOU

The Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Campaign is one of Canada’s largest and most recognizable annual charitable events. In fact, there are more than 2,000 kettle locations across Canada that provide funds to support a wide range of Salvation Army programs in your community. Become a Crime Scene Technician for a Day

Genome BC and Capilano University are once again teaming up to deliver a unique workshop series in Dec 2011 & April 2012. Genome BC Geneskool is traveling outreach program that introduces high school students to the fascinating world of molecular biology and genomics. Like an episode of the popular CSI television series, these full-day workshops allow students to become crime scene technician. One-day workshops will be offered Dec 12-16, 2011 and April 15 -19 & 23 – 26, 2012. If you are interested in this please call 604-675-1022 to register.

Parkgate Community Centre

Parkgate Community Centre launching a new program called “Social Success through Soapbox”. This program will be aimed at social engagement success for Pre-teens. These preteens will be building Soapbox Cars and participating in a Soapbox Derby at the end of the school year (June).

Firstly, we specifically are looking for a few students who have carpentry skills that would be sufficient for operating wood shop equipment. Secondly, we are looking for individuals to support the social engagement aspect; with programs such as homework support, event coordination, crafts, etc… These students should demonstrate maturity, good listening skills, and leadership abilities.

This is a great work experience opportunity… if you are interested in this new program, please see Ms. Parmar ASAP. The program will start end of Nov.

Mt. Seymour Ski Instructor Development Practicum

v     Mt. Seymour – High School Sport Credits and Experience: Ski Instructor Development Practicum

Certification by the Canadian Ski Instructors’ Alliance and Canadian Association of Snowboard Instructors is now recognized by the BC Ministry of Education, which awards External Sports Credits for CSIA and CASI Level 1 and CSIA and CASI Level 2.

CSIA / CASI Level 1: UXSO 10 – 2 Credits

CSIA / CASI Level 2: UXSO 11 – 4 Credits

 Mt Seymour Resorts is an active member of the local community and a strong supporter of all forms of outdoor education.  The objective of the Instructor Development Practicum is to offer local students an opportunity to learn about the ski industry, gain a internationally recognized, professional certification, earn credit for High School graduation and build valuable work and volunteer experience.

 Ski Instructor Development Practicum

  • This program is for all students ages 15 and up who can ski at an advanced intermediate level and who wish to explore a career in the ski industry
  • Students must commit to 12 daysof volunteer work for Mt Seymour Resorts Ski and Snowboard School
    • Any 6 of the following dates: Dec.17,18,19,20,21,22,26,27,28,29,30,31
    • Either Saturdays Jan. 7 – Feb. 4 or Sundays Jan. 8 – Feb. 5
    • One further day during the 2011-2012 season
  • In exchange Mt Seymour will provide each student with
    • a Staff Season Pass, valid for entire 2011-2012 season, including staff benefits
    • 4 on-snow training sessions to prepare for the CSIA Level 1 Course
    • Level 1 Canadian Ski Instructor’s Alliance Course and Exams free (course cost is $365)
    • Opportunity to work as a ski instructor once certified

 Students will gain knowledge of resort operation, experience instructing lessons and working with the public, expert ski training, 2 credits towards graduation (pending successful completion of CSIA 1).
