Camp Ignite (Summer Women firefighter program)

Not just for girls who want to be Firefighters, but for any girl in grade 9-12 who wants to challenge herself, build confidence and have a unique experience!
Every summer female firefighters from the lower mainland get together to host a camp for young women interested in learning about a career as a firefighter, empowering themselves as strong women and having a lot of fun!  Each municipality sponsors one to two girls from high schools in their area (yes, that means there is no cost to the girls).

It is not essential that you  have firefighting as one of your future career options. 
Camp Ignite runs August 7-10 and is an overnight camp. DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS IS JUNE 9, 2014

I Can Fly Program 2014 (Cathay Pacific)

Due to its success, Cathay Pacific is proud to announce ‘I Can Fly’
Vancouver, Spring 2014. A program that offers Grade 11 high school
students the opportunity to step behind the scenes of commercial
aviation and explore various careers in this exciting industry.

We provide an 8-week Academy that meets once a week to help students
explore various careers in aviation.

Through a series of field trips, lectures and hands-on exercises,
participants will learn everything about aviation from engineering
to inflight catering, and even meet real pilots and flight
attendants.

The program is provided free of charge to Grade 11 high school
students in the Greater Vancouver Area. Applications are being

Law Day 2014 Open House North Vancouver Courthouse

 

North Shore Family Court and Youth Justice Committee (NSFCYJC),  invites you to our upcoming Law Day 2014 Open House at the North Vancouver Courthouse on Saturday April 12th, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Attendees of Law Day will have an opportunity to hear a number of presentations regarding various matters dealt with by the North Vancouver Provincial Courthouse including Criminal, Family, Youth, and First Nation courts.  The police will kick-start the event with a “simulated” crime scene to give the public an awareness of what happens from a 911 call through to sentencing and conviction.

Book Buddies Needed at Capilano Public Library

Book Buddies is a Library program that helps children aged 6-11 who need support and encouragement in maintaining and improving their reading skills. Children are matched with a teen volunteer, and for half an hour each week, the Book Buddies read aloud to each other, choose books to take home and do literacy-based activities such as word games.
Book Buddies is most effective when the child meets with the same volunteer each week for eight weeks. Volunteers need to be able to commit to 26 hours over 2 months: Tuesdays 3:30pm-6:00pm, April 1 through May 27, at Capilano Branch Library, 3045 Highland Blvd. This includes a two hour training session.

Lower Mainland Green Team WEEKEND activities in West Vancouver and North Vancouver

The Lower Mainland Green Team has joined forces with the Caulfeild Park Conservation Society to remove English Ivy at Caulfeild Park on Saturday March 8th from 9.45am-1pm. To learn more and to sign up please click HERE

Special Olympics Volunteer Job June 7th

Special Olympics BC – North Shore provides sport training and competition for all levels of athlete—from developmental to high performance. Over 170 athletes on the North Shore train and compete in local Special Olympics programs, and many go on to participate in regional, provincial, national and international competitions. Our North Shore Local is celebrating our 30 years of existence and we are hosting our ‘30 & Thriving Gala’ on June 7, 2014 to honor and pay homage to the athletes and volunteers that have been around for 30 years as well as celebrate that SOBC North Shore is 30 years old and still ThRIVING!  Most of the volunteers would only need to commit to that evening, most likely from 4pm – 10pm and for an hour the week before the event to do a walk through on site.  For more information on our local, please check out our website: http://www.sobcnorthshore.ca/
