Spring Exhibition 2025 🌷

Our last big plp event of the year is finally complete! The spring exhibition and I think it was the longest time I have ever been at school! This was the first time that science has ever been presented in an exhibition. You might be wondering what our exhibition this year is about? Well read all about it below!

And we didn’t have any fake vines so I literally went around the corner and scavenged for them and hung them around our tent. 😂

The Story Of Canada!

The whole theme of our exhibition today that connects all the grades together was the story of Canada. My grade is focused on the land before humans and how the land grew to be how it is today through… POLLINATION!!!

Driving Question 🏎️:

How can we support and protect local pollinators to ensure healthy ecosystems in our community?

A way that we can support and protect our local pollinators is my informing the public. We did that with our calls to action. I feel that with our spring exhibition we actually did inform the public by like I said using our call to actions. Our call to actions are things that we sent to organizations to look at and use when advertising protection to our pollinators. I feel that these help ensure a healthy community by making sure everyone knows what is happening and that everyone can do whatever they can to help.

Pollinators?

There were 5 different groups representing different pollinators there was:

Hummingbirds (my group)

Bees

Butterflies

Bats

Plants

We would be representing our local pollinator by setting up a booth that is showing the public how we can help them by using pamphlets,  posters and lots of other things so we could talk about what our station was about.

My Group:

We were the hummingbirds! And I love hummingbirds and so I thought it was perfect! My group members were:

Brooklyn

Evelyn

Maggie

Cole

Aiden

I think my group worked well together and I am very proud of how we did in the exhibition!

Food Web

Hummingbirds are very important to our ecosystem they are one of our main local pollinators and without them the whole food chain would collapse. I made a very detailed food web about all the animals and it is interactive so when people came up to our booth they could click around and interact with it. Here’s a quick video on showing how it works:

And the bonus is when you clicked the hummingbird and it said to see what the food web would look like with them disappearing and showing how it is destroyed. So that was our interactive food web!

Our Pollination Pamphlet

Our pamphlet is something that took longer than it should have but we are very proud of it. There is another side to it as well with a diagram of a flower and the title slide. Our pamphlet was also something we had at our booth for people to look at, we did have some people that stole a few of our pamphlets during the exhibition though…

Exhibition!

The date of the exhibition was busy and chaotic but it’s kinda fun not gonna lie. We had a lot to get set up before our doors opened up and lets just say it was even more busy and chaotic.

Our interactive element was a relay that people can participate in to win a sticker or a growing bookmark that you can plants in the ground, or a regular bookmark you can put in your book. The relay would consist of you holding a spoon with a ping pong ball on it and delivering it to the flower cup on the other side of the path draw my chalk.

We had a lot of food options we had cookies, beignets, pretzels and fruit kebabs. The food was a hit with all of it being gone when the night was over and we also had lemonade that people could grab while observing and listening to us talk.

These were our call to actions. They were things we could do that could inform the public public (the people that weren’t there) of what they could do to help. We focused on 3 main points, not using pesticides, looking after you birdfeeder and letting your garden grow wild so that nature can continue to thrive.

Conclusion:

I really loved this exhibition. It was only my second one and I had forgotten what it was like talking and smiling for hours and my face getting sore from smiling. I learned that with this project it’s so much easier to work together. If we had to do some of this work load on our own it would’ve been so much harder. In conclusion I had so much fun in our spring exhibition 25!

Thank you so much for reading! Stay posted for my next post! 👍

The Great War – TS (Iykyk)

I CANNOT DRAW!!! Were my first thoughts when I heard of this project. And this project so-to-speak was making a graphic novel. Ya that’s a lotttt of drawing…

Driving Question 🏎️:

How can researching the historical significance of World War I inform and enhance the storytelling in a graphic novel I create?

This was our driving question and yes our comic was based solely on WW1 and different events that had occurred throughout it. And to answer our driving question I feel that by researching the history on WW1 that it can enhance our storytelling by using more evidence behind what our story may be about making the story more interesting and historically correct. I also feel that to inform the reader of actual events during WW1 would enhance the story effectively as well.

Launch 🚀

The launch of this project was very interesting and kinda nerve wrecking. We had 24 hours to make an 8 panel minimum comic and I know that doesn’t sound like a lot but we still had to plan the story, find images to trace, actually end up tracing them and put them in a book and repeat process! I am going to be honest with you I didn’t finish it… ya so basically you can see what I mean:

Ahhhh it burns my eyes! Stop looking at it! In my defence I had soccer practice that night and I know that’s a horrible excuse but I need to say something that will make you believe that I am not that bad, but I really am that bad…

This was the activity we had done to introduce the fact we would be making a larger version of this and a proper fully thought out story.

Mentor Text

This was the graphic novel we all read that I envied very hard. Throughout this reading we had activities to do such as 4 W’s, reflections and other things.

Case Studies:

These case studies are something we did whilst Mr. Harris was away and he left us with randomized groups and a case to study along with information given to us. I was in the group of “Caring for the wounded” along with:

Sam

Carmyn

We did technically have Eloise in our group as well but she was away for the starting day and presenting day, so it was just us. I was proud of what my group put together and our notes on it. We talked about how important the people caring for the wounded were and what kinds of people would care for them including, stretcher bearers, nurses and dentists. Here is a short video of our keynote presentation:

Graphic Novel?

For our graphic novel we had many expectations and limitations. This graphic novel was to be all about WW1 based around how Canada was apart of it showing how our country transformed and was looked at completely differently by the rest of the world. We also had many things we had to include in this comic, we had to do a minimum of 20 panels so we would include all of these in that 20.

A minimum of 1 Splash Panel
A minimum of 1 Open Panel
Reverse
Bleed
Close-up
Longshot
Narratory Blocks containing your narration
Speech Ballons containing dialogue
Thought Bubbles containing character thoughts
Sound Effects
Labels and Captions
Steps 👣:
We didn’t spend to much of the time in the project in the planning stages most of the time was taken up by the drawing aspect which I will get to in just a few secs. We did things during this planning stage that would, well help us plan for our book! We created a “story spine” and a “5 w’s and an h”. Here is my craft link so you can see! Click here!
My Finished Comic!
(Still figuring out how to add into here)
Conclusion:
Going into this project I wasn’t very excited I knew that we would have to be drawing which I wasn’t (and still isn’t) very good at. I also knew that with this being a graphic novel we would have to be creating and telling an effective story which isn’t always easy. This project has helped me manage my time more effectively with focusing during class and taking time out of my day and my sleep schedule to draw the images because at the end of the day I knew that I would be able to stay up late editing my comic but I wouldn’t be able to draw late because it is exhausting. Overall I’m happy with my end product and I can’t wait for next year!
Thank you so much for reading! Stay posted for my next post! 👍

What’s Inside The Box?! 📦

Honestly I don’t think I have spent so many late nights trying to finish a 3 minute video but hey PLP is full of firsts…

Welcome to my Unboxing Me blog post. For this project we learnt a lot about how we manage ourselves and about who we truly are as people and as learners, continue reading to find out how!

Project Overview

In this project we made a final 3-4 minute long video about who we are and what makes us, US! We would tell a story about how we got to where we are now and how we plan to do something with that in the future. Throughout this project we focused on reflection and managing ourselves through goal setting and tracking with our WDYRW (What do you really want) activities.

Read more about our project below 😄⬇️

DQ🏎️:

How can I tell a story about who I am and where I am going?

In this project when I told the story about me that went into my final video I really leaned into the fact that I love engineering, building and creating. A way that I told where I would go with that is setting my goals for the future and I don’t want to spoil to much because you will see my video soon! I feel the best way to tell an effective and engaging story is to keep it short and concise telling the key details that really add to the story.

Time Blocking

A first major thing we learned was time blocking, time blocking was something Ms. Mc was convinced would change our lives.. well umm it didn’t. KIDDING! Heh funny (no it wasn’t) anyways you may be wondering what time blocking even is, well time blocking is a way to plan and schedule and organize your life! Different ways you could time blocking are:

  • Using a calendar app
  • Using the app Things
  • Keeping a journal
  • Honestly anything that works for you, draw on your hand if that helps!

Managing Me Video!

The managing me video was a video we made about well.. managing me. So we had to talk about our different strategies that we use to stay organized. Our teacher Ms. Mcwilliam wanted us to add how we used things and our calendar app and any other sources that we used to manage ourselves.

I included Images such as pictures of my calendar, my things page and my home calendar.

What Do You Really Want?

Throughout this project we have been reading a book called “What do you really want? By Beverly K Bachel”

This book helped us focus on goal setting and how to plan for the future. In every chapter we would get different activities to do to keep track of our goals and to visualize our future success (or something like that). We would create a journal or a notability document where we would record everything that we did. I also used the app things to help me keep track of the different activities I had to complete and what sections of the book I had to read.

From this activity I learned how to set goals for myself and how they don’t have to be grand goals but even the little victories count. In future I will review some of my goal tracker activities and see where I can strive even further.

Unboxing Me Video Script 🎥📜

This was when we started planning our final video! We were tasked with creating our script that would tell the story of us and answer our driving question.

Honestly I had a lot of trouble creating this script and pin pointing my video on one idea and going through with it. The entire time in class that we had to work on it I stared at a blank document hoping something would spark in my mind. Sadly it didn’t that class so I left with a basically blank document but when I got home I thought long and hard and I decided to talk about my love for engineering and how it started and where I am going to go with it in the future. Here is my final script:

Moving Storyboard

Our moving storyboard was to help us plan for our video. We would create a keynote slide deck or animation to help show Ms. Mc our kind of whole idea of how our video is going to look. I made mine as a keynote slide deck that you click through. I may have not entirely thought that through on how to show you because it is 52 slides but I took a screen recording and here it is!

DONT JUDGE DRAWING IS NOT MY STRONGSUIT!

Unboxing Me Final Video!!!

Reflection 🪞

This project really helped me help me realize how important it is to set goals for yourself whether it’s academically or not. Throughout this project I feel I have gotten better at setting goals for myself self and looking toward the future to help me plan. At this beginning of this project when we were learning about time blocking and made our managing me video, I feel that helped me with my organization a whole lot more. I have now set up my calendar to fit my schedule and added it as a widget so I don’t forget. In conclusion this project has helped me become a more organized person and someone who can plan for future by setting goals for myself.

Thank you so much for reading! Stay posted for my next post! 😄👍
